The reason I ask is because I love spicy food and have a high tolerance to heat and am often disappointed at loose interpretations of "hot." I see that on their menu you can choose the heat level but I'm wondering how accurate it is. I don't like painful "I can barely eat this" levels, but definitely like breaking a sweat.
EDIT: I tried the hot, extra hot, and reaper. Loved all three, thought the chicken was nice and juicy and the slaw complemented the heat nicely.
For all the spice lovers out there I’d say the heat scale is : accurate. If you love spicy like I do, reaper will break you a sweat. My favorite was extra hot and will be go-to because to me, the perfect amount of heat is when you have to take a break halfway through the sandwich to recover for a minute. Reaper is totally doable but has a slow buildup of heat which intensifies by the minute—I would only avoid the reaper in the future if I’m going straight back to work and don’t wanna be all red.
I’d say it’s a little less hot than you’d expect. But I definitely recommend trying it, their chicken is great. Spice-C in Tustin lives up to its name and definitely brings the heat. Babas in Costa Mesa is also good
Spice-C is insane. I've had Baba's hottest before and to me it wasn't bad at all... however it was probably the most flavorful hot chicken sandwich I've had. I'd say their hottest is a perfect level of heat to be super enjoyable for me.
Spice-C is up there 100%. Try the extra hot first, then go for the reaper.
You should try Cluck kitchen which can be as spicy as Spice-C but with better chicken / breading.
Dave's definitely isn't that hot. someone else mentioned Spice-C and their hottest is no joke. same goes for Cluck Kitchen and Jay Bird's hottest. but all 3 have manageable levels outside of those. I grow peppers, make and sell hot sauce, and have a stupidly high tolerance for spice. but the hottest at those 3 places is unmanageable. the lower levels, though, have great kick and flavor.
I'll bite. Have had Jay Bird's hottest and it's manageable. Are any of the others spicier? Or anything next level?

Try hotties in orange, there chicken can get pretty hot
Clucked is where it’s at. Hottest level (clucked) is nearly inedible, but fun to try. ‘Very hot’ is also insanely hot. ‘Hot’ level is damn good. Even ‘medium’ will break a sweat for many people.
Clyde’s in Fullerton (and soon Yorba Linda) is really solid too.
As others have said, Cluck in Irvine is good, decent beer and cocktail things.
Spice-C is no joke. We fricken love spicy stuff, and Spice-C will hunt you down and kill you later if you’re not careful. Good chicken though.
The Golden Hot Fried Chicken in DT Santa Ana is the best hot chicken I've had in Orange County.
