Local Hero Jamie White Saves Stranded Family During Flash Flood

Springfield, IL – October 25, 2023 – In an act of bravery and quick thinking, local resident Jamie White became the hero of the hour after rescuing a family of four trapped in their vehicle during a sudden flash flood that swept through the Springfield area on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Maple Street and Riverside Drive, where heavy rains caused the nearby creek to overflow, submerging several roads. Witnesses reported that a minivan carrying a family of four was caught in the rising waters, leaving them stranded and unable to open the doors due to the pressure of the floodwater.

Jamie White, a 32-year-old construction worker and avid outdoorsman, was driving home from work when he noticed the distressed family. Without hesitation, he grabbed a crowbar from his truck and waded into the waist-deep water to assist.

'I just saw the van and heard the kids screaming,' White recounted. 'I knew I had to do something. The water was rising fast, and they didn’t have much time.'

Using the crowbar, White managed to pry open the rear door of the van, freeing the two children, ages 6 and 8, and their parents. He then helped guide the family to safety on higher ground, where emergency responders were waiting. The family was treated for minor injuries and hypothermia but is expected to make a full recovery.

Springfield Fire Chief Laura Martinez praised White’s actions, calling him a 'true hero.' 'Without Jamie’s quick thinking and bravery, this situation could have ended tragically,' Martinez said. 'He risked his own life to save others, and we’re incredibly grateful for his selflessness.'

The family, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed their gratitude to White, calling him their 'guardian angel.' 'We can’t thank him enough,' the father said. 'He saved our lives.'

White, who has lived in Springfield his entire life, humbly downplayed his actions. 'I just did what anyone would do,' he said. 'I’m just glad they’re safe.'

The flash flood, caused by a sudden downpour, has left parts of Springfield under water, with local authorities urging residents to avoid flooded areas and stay indoors. Meanwhile, Jamie White’s heroic act has become the talk of the town, with many calling for him to be recognized by the city for his bravery.

As the waters recede and the community begins to recover, one thing is clear: Jamie White’s courage has left an indelible mark on Springfield, reminding us all of the power of selflessness and quick action in the face of danger.
