Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean has been criticised by Hollywood actors after speaking against intimacy coordinators.
Intimacy coordinators work in TV and film to make sure actors involved in sex scenes are protected and feel safe, while ensuring scenes are carefully choreographed and rehearsed.
But in an interview with The Times , Sean Bean said that these consultants “ spoil the spontaneity”.
“It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things,” he said.
“Somebody saying, ‘Do this, put your hand there, while you touch his thing…’ I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise.”
He referred to an intimate scene in Netflix show Snowpiercer, with co-star Lena Hall, which he described as “quite surreal, dream-like and abstract. And mango-esque.”
While the interviewer countered that intimacy consultants have become a vital tool to protect actors in light of the #MeToo movement, Bean went on to say about Hall: “I suppose it depends on the actress. This one had a musical cabaret background, so she was up for anything.”
Hall has since shared a Twitter thread addressing the comments made by Bean. “J ust because I am in theater (not cabaret, but I do perform them every once in a while) does not mean that I am up for anything.”

However, she also added: “Sean is an awesome actor and made me feel not only comfortable but also like I had a true acting partner in those bizarre scenes.”
Other actors have also spoken put against Bean’s flippant remarks.
Actor and activist Jameela Jamil called out Bean’s “technical” comments by saying : “ It should only be technical. It’s like a stunt. Our job as actors is to make it not look technical. Nobody wants an impromptu grope…”
West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler – who appeared in intimate scenes with co-star Ansel Elgort – added : “ Intimacy coordinators establish an environment of safety for actors. I was extremely grateful for the one we had on [ West Side Story ].
“They showed grace to a newcomer like myself + educated those around me who’ve had years of experience. Spontaneity in intimate scenes can be unsafe. Wake up.”
Mamma Mia actor Amanda Seyfriend also opened up about her early career experiences of sex scenes in a new interview.
“ Being 19, walking around without my underwear on – like, are you kidding me?,” she told Porter.
“How did I let that happen? Oh, I know why: I was 19 and I didn’t want to upset anybody, and I wanted to keep my job. That’s why.”
Sean Bean is yet to respond to the backlash.

Jameela Jamil continues to prove she’s a strong, proud woman, posing unretouched for Playboy magazine’s Spring 2020 issue.
She posted a series of shots from the photoshoot to her Twitter on Thursday, March 12. “From my @Playboy shoot,” she wrote. “I wanted to be shot like a man. No retouching , hi res, loose, comfortable clothes and completely unsexualized. I felt extremely free. My interviewer was @iSmashFizzle who also made me feel free. Maybe too free during an interview?”
In the spread, she’s seen in a couple of different menswear-inspired looks featuring suit jackets, turtleneck sweaters and neckties.
The Good Place actress has been vocal on body positivity in the fashion and beauty space.
In May 2019, she spoke about how disappointing it is that designer sample sizes are often too small for a lot of women. “The designers make the samples really not much bigger than which would be worn by a child,” she said in a video she posted to Twitter. “And then all of the actresses and the models normally have to starve themselves a lot of the time just to get into these. So the only people that we see in the magazines are people who are thin enough to get into these samples.”
As a result, she continued, readers are led to think that achieving that small size is easy. “But the lengths so many people have to go to, especially as we get older, to fit into these tiny, tiny, little samples are so extreme. I can’t even tell you!”
And Jamil aims to change that, one fashion spread at a time, starting with this one.

British actress, radio host, writer, and activist (amongst other things), Jameela Jamil , is frequently in the headlines. Most often it’s because of something she’s said or done (the outspoken Jamil often finds herself at the height of controversy). Strangely too, people really want to know how tall she is – searches for ‘Jameela Jamil height’ spike every time she’s in the media like clockwork.
Most recently, it was about “a sex joke that three past lovers had made about her”. It’s exactly the kind of content the activist frequently calls out, and yet, the headlines to continue to come.
The article in question was published by news.com.au , and the comments were taken from an interview with Conan O’Brien on his podcast, Needs a Friend. In the interview, Jamil described how her interactions with three different sexual partners had coincidentally resulted in the same comment.
“Sex in itself is so stupid. The thrusting? What are we doing? I’m not amazing in bed. But I’ve got big boobs so I don’t have to be,” Jamil described.
“Some of the reviews I’ve had… I’ve been told by three separate men that making love to me – and I think they meant this as a compliment – was like having sex with a memory foam mattress .”
“I shift to any shape. It’s not that I’m bendy, it’s that I don’t have mu scles anywhere but my heart. I’m like a human marshmallow with nipples.”
Elsewhere, the article brought up Jamil’s “comedy in the bedroom” – allegedly she has a habit of cracking jokes with partner James Blake (one example she recounts was of her saying “unexpected item in the bagging area” after a sex fail) – which, apparently, Blake isn’t too impressed with.
“Mostly if I can just stay silent that’s enough because it’s my trying to insert comedy in the bedroom that goes down badly.”
Honestly, I appreciate a bit of comedy in the bedroom.
It was only last week that Jamil called out the Daily Mail for cherry-picking information for a story about her.

Recently, she also pointed out a pattern of her and other women’s depiction in the media, in which she claims sites “build her up, hyperbolize her, overexpose her to make people sick of her face, and then the scene is set for the inevitable kick off the pedastal [sic] THEY put her on, which they did SPECIFICALLY to have an entertaining height to drop her from.”

Far from her sex life being the most interesting thing about her, Jamil uses her platform for good: to spark thought-provoking conversations about a range of contemporary issues.
She is the founder of I Weigh , an Instagram -account-come-platform, which seeks to explore social issues including mental health, climate change, the representation of marginalised groups, and body positivity. Last month, on World Suicide Prevention Day, she also spoke out about her suicide attempt seven years ago, as a means to raise awareness.
We can only hope that one day soon a woman’s sex life isn’t so newsworthy.
