In the early 1980s, Caroline "Tula" Cossey was living the dream of every aspiring model. She was cast to play a Bond girl in the film For Your Eyes Only alongside Roger Moore. To accompany the film's release, she appeared in a spread for Playboy, featuring her and other Bond girls from the film.
Then, just as the Bond movie came out, a tabloid called News of the World outed Cossey against her will in a headline that read "James Bond Girl Was a Boy." The tabloid's headline sparked a media firestorm and Cossey was thrust into the spotlight as a trailblazer. She instantly became a role model for trans women. Since then, Cossey carried on with her acting and modeling, making it into the pages of Playboy once again in 1991 as well as penning two autobiographies.
In a new interview with Playboy about her groundbreaking career , Cossey, 60, (who now lives in suburban Atlanta with her second husband) said she was born as Barry Cossey and spent much of her life knowing that she was a woman. She completed gender-reassignment surgery in 1974 after years of other surgeries and treatments. In the '70s and '80s, she pursued her dream of modeling, appearing in Harper's Bazaar and Australian Vogue. She also found fame as a "Page Three Girl," a model in the pages of British paper The Sun.
During her lifetime, Cossey also fought for eight years with the European Court of Human Rights for the right to change her gender on her birth certificate. She won one legal round until the British government appealed and she lost. It wasn't until the 2004 Gender Recognition Act was passed in the British parliament that Cossey was allowed to legally change her gender on the document.
The tabloids' obsession with printing shocking transphobic headlines cost her a marriage. In 1989, News of the World once again featured Cossey in a headline, proclaiming "SEX CHANGE PAGE THREE GIRL WEDS." At the time, Cossey was married to Elias Fattal, who knew his wife was trans but never told his conservative family. According to Playboy , Fattal's family "summoned" him after hearing the news and she never saw him again. Their marriage was quietly annulled in a move that devastated Cossey.
"My heart was broken," she said. "The whole thing is ugly. But you pick up the pieces and get on with your life."
Then she decided to star in a Playboy pictorial feature, telling the magazine she felt "absolutely honored" to be known as the magazine's first trans model.
"I remember being invited to the Mansion to meet Hugh Hefner," she said. "He looked into my eyes and I immediately knew he felt my story. He felt my cause."
"I wanted to fight for the right of recognition," Cossey told the magazine. She said the exposure in Playboy helped her because it showed that trans women can be sexy. She appeared on talk shows and was given a platform to discuss the topic at length. "It wasn't just a 10- or 15-minute segment; it was an entire hour. And it gave people the chance to get to know me, to feel the situation and hopefully gain empathy and understanding. That was my goal, and Playboy was a great platform for that."
The new interview features original pictures from the 1991 history-making spread.
" Playboy rerunning my pictorial means something," she said. "So thank you, Hef."
Cossey said she left modeling and acting because she had difficulty landing the types of roles and gigs she wanted and also longed for a break from the media spotlight. "I felt like a circus act," she said. "I worried about my sanity. I wanted quiet. I wanted peace of mind and to fall back into society in a more regular manner as a loving and supportive wife."
Cossey also talked about what it was like to see people like Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox on the news so often. "I feel like I was probably so many years too early," she said. (The interview was conducted before Caitlyn Jenner debuted in Vanity Fair , which is why Cossey refers to her as "Bruce" and uses male pronouns.)
"Laverne Cox is so comfortable talking about it," Cossey said. "It's the changing times. You used to see a gay friend on a TV show only because it was fashionable. It's not fashionable. It's reality. It's the way it is."
Sadly, the impact of the negativity of the press scrutiny in the '80s still remains with Cossey. "I don't know if I'll if I'll ever stop feeling like a second-class citizen. It's embedded and instilled from birth," she said. "You grow up, you don't fit in, you don't belong, you're bullied. That doesn't go away in five minutes. I don't think it ever goes away."
