Jake and Lila Explore Underly's Secret

In the quiet, misty town of Underly, Wisconsin, strange things began happening after the old clock tower struck midnight for the 13th time.

Eleven-year-old Jake Underly—the town’s namesake descendant—noticed it first. His shadow started moving on its own. Then, his reflection in the diner’s window winked at him.

'That’s not normal,' Jake muttered.

His best friend, Lila Chen, adjusted her glasses. 'Maybe Underly’s built on something… weird.'

They dug through the town archives and found a faded map labeled 'Underlay: Gateway Below.' Beneath the town lay a hidden world—Underly—where reflections lived, shadows whispered, and time didn’t quite work right.

That night, Jake’s shadow tugged him toward the old well. Lila followed, gripping her flashlight. As they descended, the air hummed. Below, an inverted Underly stretched endlessly—buildings upside-down, streets winding into the sky.

A figure approached—Jake’s other self, grinning. 'Took you long enough.'

Lila gasped. 'We’re in the Underly of Underly.'

The double nodded. 'And the gateway’s closing. You’ve got one night to solve the riddle—or stay forever.'

With puzzles to unravel and a ticking clock (literally—the tower’s chimes echoed here too), Jake and Lila raced through the mirrored town. They faced twisted versions of neighbors, outsmarted mischievous shadows, and finally confronted the Keeper of Underly—a spectral librarian guarding the town’s oldest secret.

'Why is this happening?' Jake demanded.

The Keeper smiled. 'Every century, Underly resets. You’re the key—Jake Underly, the last descendant. Fix the clock, or both towns vanish at dawn.'

With minutes left, Jake and Lila repaired the broken mechanism in the inverted clock tower. As the final gear clicked, the world shimmered. They woke up back in normal Underly, the clock ticking harmlessly.

The next morning, the townsfolk went about their day, oblivious. Only Jake and Lila exchanged a knowing glance.

'So…' Lila whispered. 'We don’t talk about Underly’s Underly?'

Jake smirked. 'Not unless we want them to hear us.'

Above them, their shadows flickered—just for a second.
