Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal are not just related by blood anymore. This year, they’re also connected through streaming. The two siblings have both separately become members of the Netflix machine, delivering two very distinct pieces of art this year.
As director and producer, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes on the world of a woman, obsessed with the dynamic of a young mother and her daughter, which prompts early memories of her experiences in the psychological drama “ The Lost Daughter .” And as actor and producer, Jake Gyllenhaal stars a police dispatcher who receives a shocking 9-1-1 call in the American remake of the Danish film, “The Guilty.” Both are for the streaming behemoth.
In separate interviews with Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast , the two discuss their own experiences working on their films and the prospect of working together in the future — with the big sister at the helm. Jake Gyllenhaal also reflects on his time working with his late co-star Heath Ledger, when they were both on the Oscar circuit for their turns as Ennis and Jack in Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain” (for which Gyllenhaal won a BAFTA award). Maggie Gyllenhaal dishes about using her partner Peter Sarsgaard as her muse, and how even though many don’t agree, “there is such a thing as women filmmaking.”

With an Oscar nomination for supporting actress opposite Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart” (2009), Maggie Gyllenhaal has always known she was a director. She just didn’t believe it. Now, her new film “The Lost Daughter,” an adaptation of the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name, has received rave reviews after debuting at the Telluride and Venice Film Festivals. The acclaimed emotional drama, which stars Oscar winner Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley and Ed Harris, has put her in the conversation for three possible Oscar nominations (for picture, director and adapted screenplay).
Meanwhile, despite astonishing performances in films like “Prisoners” (2013), “Nightcrawler” (2014) and “Nocturnal Animals” (2016), a second Oscar nomination still eludes Jake Gyllenhaal. Despite recognition from groups such as the Golden Globes, SAG and BAFTA, he has so far only mustered one swing at the Oscar bat.
But with “The Guilty,” Gyllenhaal is taking the reigns once again, delivering a visceral and intoxicating performance as Joe Baylor, a man with more problems than the wildfires that surround him in California. Under Nine Stories Productions — a New York-based production company that Gyllenhaal co-founded with Riva Marker in 2015 — he’s only getting more ambitious in his efforts.
Also, in the latest Variety Awards Circuit Roundtable, the panel discusses the new movies hitting theaters (and streaming platforms) this week, including Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” from Warner Bros. and Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” from Searchlight Pictures. We discuss their awards chances and how their runs could mimic past successes such as “Mad Max: Fury Road” or perhaps even a quirkier “Spotlight.” Finally, we wrap by discussing the late-bloomers still left in the season, including Aaron Sorkin’s “Being the Ricardos,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” and Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up.” Other topics include the long-awaited return of HBO’s “Succession.”
Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast is hosted by Clayton Davis, Michael Schneider, Jazz Tangcay and Jenelle Riley and is your one-stop listen for lively conversations about the best in movies. Michael Schneider is the producer and Drew Griffith edits. Each week, “Awards Circuit” features interviews with top talent and creatives; discussions and debates about awards races and industry headlines; and much, much more. So. This is where we're at. There is apparently a whole genre of fan fiction, existing mostly on LiveJournal (because duh, I guess) that's called "Gyllencest", and is based on the horrible notion that there's something romantic going on between brother/sister acting duo Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal . The whole thing has started spiraling out of control since the siblings were each other's date to The Golden Globes this week, and because they acted affectionate on the red carpet and Jake seemed to tear up watching Maggie accept her award. Because you know, no brother and sister have ever hung out, hugged one another, or become moved with pride at each other's success. The logical conclusion here is that we must immediately talk about the possibility that they could be fucking. Cool job with the logic, Internet.
A lot of the stories make Jake out to be the initiator, very voyeristic of his sister and a little bit rapey. Here's an excerpt from a story titled " theirloveisso...vaguelydutch? "
"The first time you saw Maggie naked was onscreen, covered in prosthetic scars. She was next to you in the theater, and when the time came she squeezed your hand and said, "Okay, Jakie, time to look away."
You tried to. You couldn't. It was too strange, too fascinating to see your own face onscreen. To see Maggie's face, so like yours, and her small round breasts and her flat stomach and her long legs. To see your sister nude and beautiful onscreen, larger than life, and to have her warm fingers wrapped around yours.
Later that night, you got drunk at the afterparty. You got drunk because every time you looked at Maggie, you saw the way she looked on film--bent over a desk, biting her lip in ecstacy, breasts submerged in bathwater. Flash flash flash of ways you should never see your sister. You know that she is not the character she plays, but you also know that it was still her naked that you saw. Her, not just the character she played.
When you got back to the hotel, Mom and Dad said goodnight and went to their room. You did't see it, but you know they gave Maggie a meaningful glance. They told, silently, her to take care of you, and she did. She got you back to your room and took your clothes off and bathed your face with a cold washcloth. She was your big sister, and she smiled down at you with a face that looked just like yours.
You kissed her on the mouth, softly, and said, "Maggie, you're beautiful."
That night, you didn't see her naked. She just looked at you with your face in an expression you didn't recognize, and then she took off her expensive dress and got into bed with you in only her slip, soft and silky against your body. She said, "Go to sleep, Jake," and kissed your cheek, and fell asleep with her head on your shoulder.
When you woke up, you took a bath together, like you had when you were kids. Without the prosthetic scars, Maggie's body is smooth and strange, different than it was onscreen. Different than yours, and you wonder how you could ever have seen her as just your sister.
It's weird. There's not much else to say about it. It's like we've entirely forgotten how to leave anything unsexualized. The siblings' Golden Globes appearance kicked up even more of these "jokes" on social media:
Personally, I am definitely not into even joking about brothers and sisters doing it. Maybe it's because I have brothers and the thought troubles me beyond belief, or maybe it's just because I'm a regular human who doesn't have to reduce everything, including familial relationship, to sex. This isn't Game of Thrones , people.

Amy Schumer Jokingly Begs Toddler Son to Tune Into the Oscars ‘for the Ratings’ (Exclusive)

Amy Schumer came with the jokes at the 2022 Oscars , and one caught the attention of Jake Gyllenhaal . During Schumer's opening monologue Sunday night, she pointed out the superstar couples in the audience, from Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith to Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, but things got a little strange when she turned to the Gyllenhaal siblings.
"We're honoring a lot of couples here tonight actually, Jada and Will Smith, Penelope and Javier Bardem and Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal," she said to Jake's genuine surprise. "It's a night for lovers."
While Jake looked genuinely caught off guard, his sister, Maggie , chucked behind him, where she was sat with her husband, Peter Sarsgaard.
Jake, who was a presenter on Sunday, was also at the awards show in support of his sister's film, The Lost Daughter , which was up for several awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, written by Maggie herself.
The brother-sister duo posed on the red carpet ahead of the show, where Jake was seen planting a kiss on his sister's smiling cheek.
But Jake wasn't alone Sunday night either. In fact, the 41-year-old actor attended the 94th annual awards show with his girlfriend, Jeanne Cadieu .
The pair made a rare appearance on the red carpet earlier this month at the Paris premiere of his upcoming flick, Ambulance , and first made their red carpet debut back in October, when they posed with Maggie and her husband at the premiere of The Lost Daughter during the New York Film Festival.
The private couple was first romantically linked in 2018 when they were spotted together in New York City.
