Jake and Luke met at Smith Lake on Labor Day weekend way back in 2014! Luke moved from Virginia to Alabama for law school a couple of years before and frequently attended Alabama Football games with his friends. After many weekends in Tuscaloosa that fall, Luke quickly came to realize he was a big fan of the Crimson Tide (and Jake too!).
Fast forward to 6 years later. Jake was finishing his last few months of medical school and they found out they'd be moving to Greenville, NC for general surgery residency. They were in the middle a global pandemic and so many things were uncertain at the time. Luke was certain he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Jake (and Jake felt the same about Luke. Obvi). Luke had already been planning to propose in April on a trip to Hawaii, but like most things in 2020, it was cancelled. They had another family trip coming up in June that Luke thought might be an option, but it was also cancelled. Luke decided it wasn’t the right time and that he would wait until another opportunity presented itself. Little did Luke know that Jake had also been contemplating a time to propose, but encountered the similar obstacles!
Jake’s medical school graduation was moved to a virtual ceremony and they discussed getting together with a small group to celebrate. During that conversation with Jake’s family he said, “It’s crazy to think that this will probably be one of the last times we’ll all be together in Birmingham before we move!” Hearing that, a light when off in Luke’s head. He didn’t want to distract or take away from celebrating this big milestone, but thought it might add to the celebration if he proposed before the graduation festivities began that day. Luke told everyone attending to arrive a little earlier so they could witness the proposal. Jake was shocked to see some of his friends arrive on time for the graduation ceremony being that they aren’t the most timely bunch, but he still had no idea what was coming! So on May 16th, 2020, a beautiful Spring day in Birmingham, Luke pulled Jake outside and everyone slowly (and quietly) trickled outside after him. Jake was completely surprised and happily said “Yes!”. The proposal was even better than the original plan (or back up plan for that matter), because they were surrounded by some of their closest friends and family.
Luke and Jake cannot wait to celebrate their love for each other on their wedding day and look forward to doing it with those who will be able to join them in Riviera Maya, Mexico!
