‘Bouncing around in lacey things’, a soca princess has been ascending the stairway of the soca kingdom. Although still unknown to many, the sensual vocals, talent, beauty and effervescence of Jardine Cherelle Legere a.k.a. ‘Jadel’ has been creating a stir. This year, with a motto of ‘twenty, twenty is plenty’, she has produced a string of hits, with her album ‘Call Me Jadel’ which contains the single ‘Hold Me Close’; undoubtedly one of the sweetest groovy soca songs of the season.
Born in Trinidad, Jadel started singing at the age of nine as a member of her primary school choir where she competed in music festivals. She first surface on the public scene as a backup singer for the soca artist Biggie Irie in 2009. Not long after, she became the lead female vocalist with the band Surface and soon after, the frontline singer for Traffic where she honed her skills as an entertainer.
With a background in R&B and other genres, Jadel has a smooth sultry natural style of singing. She can spice up a song with sexy overtones when the lyrics beckons. But don’t be fooled by her mellowness when singing a groove, this songstress can also dish it out hot when it comes to power soca. Whatever the style or tempo, her sweetness of tone and clarity in articulation always rings through.
Jadel hasn’t only blossomed musical but also into motherhood with the recent birth of her daughter who accompanies her almost everywhere, sometimes even into the studio. Jadel sees baby as her main responsibility and top priority which inspired her to pen the song ‘Priority’ a power soca track that took her to this year International Soca Monarch (ISM) semifinals.
Jadel writes most of her songs herself but has also done some collaboration with a few of the top writers in soca. In her smashing 2020 album, ’Call Me Jadel’, she has worked with top producers like ‘Nine Mind Lenkey’, ‘GBM’, ‘Wetty Beatz’, ‘Motto’, and ‘London Future’.
Tracks from “Call Me Jadel” and previous recordings
Not stopping for Motherhood or anything else, Jadel suspended her studies for a Law degree with the University of London in pursuit of achieving her dreams in the musical industry. She told Caribbean Entertainment Hub (CEH):
“juggling music and Law would’ve been too much for me. Both careers require lots of time and investment. I Believe I can achieve both because both are my passion, but music at the moment was less of a financial burden.”
When asked by CEH: Where do you want to take your music and how do you intend to get there? She replied:
“I would like my music to be more global/ international, reach people who never knew what Soca music sounds like and embrace it as how it should be. I intend to keep dabbling and fusing Soca with other sounds, performing on international stages to the best of my ability until it gets there.”
The burgeoning soca artist is well on her way on achieving these objectives. Jadel has already been well received in New York, Atlanta, Miami, Saint Martin, Italy, Greece and Montenegro. Her noteworthy achievements are 2016 ISM Carib break out artist, 2018 ISM finalist, 2020 semifinalist, and the releasing of her 2020 compilation album entitled “Call Me Jadel”. This year, she is scheduled to perform in Bahamas, Japan, Singapore, and Ibiza; provided that the world returns to some degree of normalcy.
Hands down, Terri Lyons is one of the most dynamic vocalists in the game with the musical versatility to match. Even though she hails from soca royalty as daughter of a soca legend, the one and only Super Blue, she has been determined to create her own legacy in the music industry
Patrice Roberts continues to embody the true strength of a woman, but to many she has evolved way beyond that. A queen in her own right who dominates the stage with pure talent, grace and humility not to mention her fashion is always, always on point. Yes, she is our Soca Queen, a title none can contest.
She is fiercely competitive, and without hesitation, can belt out a tune upon request, she is Vanilla, Guyanese songstress and seven time Road March winner. But it was not always this way for the once very shy girl from Hopetown, Mahaica-Berbice.
