Striking: Jacqueline, 69, doesn't believe in Botox or having work done - thinking is the key to good looks
Jacqueline Bisset is wearing a fitted tracksuit top with the zip pulled down enough to reveal her famous voluptuous cleavage, and the skinniest of skinny jeans that make her legs look like a ballerina’s, which she once wanted to be.
Her face is lined, but still beautiful at 69. She doesn’t believe in Botox or having work done.
As she explained in her now infamous, rambling speech when she won her Golden Globe for Stephen Poliakoff’s Dancing On The Edge in January, she believes positive thinking is the key to lasting good looks.
‘You have to forgive everybody. It’s the best beauty treatment.’
She says you should never look back or waste energy on regret. ‘I have massive lines, but I feel OK about them. Also, as one gets older, one doesn’t have enough time to go through all this angst stuff.’
She seems to have always courted controversy with her unique blend of beauty, intellect and English propriety. She was born in Weybridge, Surrey, and afterwards moved to Tilehurst, near Reading, Berkshire. But her mother, Arlette, was born in France and became a lawyer who escaped from Nazi-occupied Paris on a bicycle, finally reaching England on a troop ship.
The French influence seemed to define Jacqueline for a while. When she was the lead in Francois Truffaut’s Day For Night, in 1973, everyone assumed she was French, and she has been in as many French movies as English language ones, being awarded the French Legion d’Honneur in 2010.
Now she is appearing in what is set to be this year’s most controversial film, Welcome To New York. It is inspired by the true story of the disgraced former head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn — who was accused of the assault and attempted rape of a chambermaid in a New York hotel — and his heiress second wife Anne Sinclair.
In the film, the names are changed, but other details from the DSK scandal are fully in place. Bisset plays the wife, Simone, and Gerard Depardieu plays her husband, Monsieur Devereaux, the head of a finance fund. The fictional character is on course to become the next president of France. He is an unrepentant, prolific sex addict.
The first 20 minutes of the film, in particular, are a relentless display of sex, setting the tone for the rest of it. There is endless sex with women in his office — as routine as dictating a memo — and when the action focuses on his hotel room, the scenes are shockingly explicit.
Ice cream, champagne, exotic lingerie, threesomes and sweat-streaked flesh are among the ingredients of the orgiastic sex, but if there is a moral to Devereaux’s sordid story it is that he is undone, and ruined, just like Strauss-Kahn, when the news of his alleged assault leaks out.
Bisset is the only woman in the movie who is not having sex with Depardieu. His large bulk is naked for a good portion of it. What was he like to work with? ‘Charming most of the time. His acting is compelling. He wasn’t always in a good mood, but his energy is always very strong.
‘There was a love scene we had towards the end where we were both in bed. We weren’t having sex but it was a very tender scene. I think I have reached the age where they don’t ask me to do sex scenes any more, and that’s quite a relief.
‘Actresses these days seem so easy with their bodies. The sex scenes seem so realistic. The women used to be always underneath. Now the women are on top. Interesting, isn’t it?’
I ask if she has ever had a relationship with a sex addict. ‘No, but I’ve known very sexual men. In the film Gerard’s character says he needs the sex to make him feel young. Everybody’s needs are different and everyone’s sexual appetite is different.
'Some people are fitter and healthier and they like sex more than people who put on weight, and there are some men who are just terribly sexy. Gerard is a man of big appetites generally.’
Siren: Bisset, pictured playing in the surf in 1998, became a sex symbol after starring in the 1977 film The Deep
For herself, though, she says she wants the men in her life to be themselves, and she tries not to change them. ‘I am good at letting people be who they are, to my own detriment. If you allow somebody to be who they are they can be happy, but that’s not necessarily good for you. It means that you could be having a difficult time.
‘Once somebody said to me about a man I was with: “I understand why he stays with you. You let him be completely free.” I’d thought he’s just being who he is and I don’t feel threatened by it. He was just very alive and a little bit wild.’
I wonder to which of her sexy but wild lovers she is referring. ‘It doesn’t matter who. I’ve always fallen in love instantaneously and mutually. My heart just becomes alert, a feeling that I’ve known someone for a very long time.
‘You feel like you know them, so you are not in a hurry to know them or change them because you have time.’
She has had seven-year relationships with some high-octane men. First, there was the actor Michael Sarrazin (from 1967 to 1974) — they met when making The Sweet Ride together. He died of cancer in 2011, aged 70.
Then came ballet dancer Alexander Godunov (1981 to 1988). He died aged 45 in 1995 of complications from hepatitis due to alcoholism. ‘My two longest-term relationships died for reasons I would say were alcohol-related.
‘I’d never seen anybody drink like this, I didn’t know what they were doing. The ballet dancer was a great soul and a great spirit. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for him’.
There were many opportunities for shorter dalliances. Everyone thought — wrongly — that she was having an affair with Frank Sinatra when they made The Detective in 1968. ‘He asked me to dinner, but I said no,’ she has explained. ‘He had a pretty hot reputation, and my good-girl English upbringing came out.’
Controversy: She plays the wife of the protagonist in Welcome to New York based on Dominique Strauss-Kahn
Explicit: Bisset's is the only character that does not have sex with Gerard Depardieu's in the raunchy film
Later that year, when Bullitt was released, there were similar rumours about her and on-screen boyfriend Steve McQueen. ‘He was attractive, but a little scary. I was very English, and he was a hip American. The way he talked would have driven me mad — I didn’t know what a dude or a soul chick was.’
So why hasn’t she married? ‘It is a variety of things. In my first relationship, he had two children and he hadn’t married their mother, so I thought if he hasn’t married her, he’s not going to marry me.
‘Also I was travelling between California, where I was living, and England, looking after my mother, who was a priority. She got multiple sclerosis when she was about 47 and she started to have dementia in her early 50s, so both those things together meant it was awful for her, and not easy for me’.
Understandably, her mother’s illness was always at the forefront of her mind.
Her father, Max, was a GP, but he left Arlette when Jacqueline was 22. ‘When he took off, it was a bit of a shock, as he was a doctor and Mummy was already ill.
'I did adore my father, but I found it hard to imagine that he could leave somebody who was so ill, and basically plonk Mummy into my lap.
‘The dementia had set in and some of the painful bits she just forgot. It’s really extraordinary; when you are older you can forget painful stuff and reach a state of bliss again. But the problem was, how would I cope with her? In the end I took her to America. She didn’t know where she was, but it was the best thing to do and she died in 1999 at 85.
‘I have a brother, Max, who lives in Miami but I was the one that . . .’ Her voice trails. ‘You just have to be there. Life has to go on and you have to deal with it.’
She adds: ‘It wasn’t all a tug of war exactly, but some part of it was. It just had to be dealt with, but eventually I got into the swing of it.’
It must have taken its toll on her, though, for she admits to being a great worrier. She says whenever she sees her goddaughter, Angelina Jolie, she finds it extraordinary how calm she always looks.
‘I’m always worrying about things. One of my fears about living in California is that I am in an area prone to fires. I’m always thinking of what I would save. I was shooting a film in Buffalo, New York, and the hotel fire alarm went off in the middle of the night. The only thing I took with me was the wig for the film.’
Change of scene: Despite being an enduring sex symbol, she has done very few raunchy scenes since the 70s
Romances: Rumours tied her to a number of high profile men including Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen
She tells me with great amusement that a salon straightened her hair in the late-Sixties and it all dropped out. ‘So I wore wigs for years.’
Although she has been an enduring sex symbol, she has done very few raunchy scenes.
However, in 1977 she starred in The Deep with Nick Nolte and the poster for the movie with her diving with her wet white T-shirt stuck to her became an iconic image.
It was taken underwater during filming on a closed set, and she didn’t realise how much she was revealing.
‘That stupid photograph was tacky, awful. I thought they had covered me up completely. I was more worried that I was going to drown. I was diving down 30 or 40 or possibly 90ft of water and the T-shirt was pressed against me.
‘Afterwards I tried to stop the whole thing, but I’m not going back there. I’ve got over it.’
For the moment she isn’t with anyone.
‘I don’t have a romance now but I have a very nice friendship with somebody. I don’t think I want it to turn into a romance, I don’t know.
‘Am I looking for somebody to have a romance with? I’m not sure. I don’t meet anybody except people who are in relationships already.
‘I am not on any of those dating websites. I know friends who like them but I’m not sure.
‘If I meet somebody who is my kind of person, it’s just boom!
‘I’ve never been a person who dates people. I’m either in it or I’m not.
‘I like people who are intelligent and self-made. Life is more interesting if you are in a relationship,’ she says slightly wistfully.

Playboy is bringing its veteran Playmates out of retirement.
For its latest issue, which hits newsstands on December 17th, the magazine has photographed five Playmates who'd previously posed for the cover in each decade dating back to the '60s.
Though they didn't all get nude for the photoshoot, Victoria Valentino, Candace Collins Jordan, Reneé Tenison, Brande Roderick, and Raquel Pomplun did pose for the sexy magazine's Equality Issue to prove they've 'still got it.'
They're back! For its latest issue, Playboy has photographed five Playmates who'd previously posed for the cover in each decade dating back to the '60s
Grand return: Candace Collins Jordan, now 62, was the December 1979 Playmate when she was 22 years old — and goes topless for the new issue
Age is just a number: The magazine proclaims that once a woman becomes a Playmate, she's always a Playmate — so they brought back some past cover stars for the Equality Issue
The magazine proclaims that once a woman becomes a Playmate, she's always a Playmate — but it's not every day that the magazine invites back former cover stars for an encore, decades later.
The new issue includes a photoshoot called 'Once a Playmate, Always a Playmate,' which features women going back through 56 years of covers, all posing together in a '70s-style setting.
The oldest Playmate to return is 77-year-old Victoria Valentino — who was the cover star at age 20 back in September 1963, and is now the oldest woman ever to pose for Playboy.
Previously, that honor had been held by actress Jane Seymour, who posed at age 67 in February of 2018.
Victoria — who made headlines in 2014 as one of women to accuse Bill Cosby of drugging and raping her — dons sexy robes for the shoot.
More recent; Brande Roderick (left), 45, was 25 when she landed the April 2000 cover, while Raquel Pomplun (right), 32, was a Playmate in April 2012 at age 24

Triumphant: Reneé Tenison (pictured in front) earned her first cover in November of 1989 at age 21, and returned as the first African American Playmate of the Year in 1990
Next up is  Candace Collins Jordan, 62, who was the December 1979 Playmate when she was 22 years old.
Unseated: Previously, Jane Seymour, pictured in October, had been the oldest woman to pose for Playboy, at age 67 in 2018
Candace does strip down a bit, lounging on an orange shag carpet in orange panties and nothing else, shielding herself on top with her arm.
In another shot, she sips a martini by the pool in a strapless top.
'I want to show women that beauty and sexuality have no limits,' she told the magazine.
Reneé Tenison earned her first cover in November of 1989 at age 21, and returned as the first African American Playmate of the Year in 1990.
Now 51, Reneé — who owns two clothing stores — poses topless for the new issue.
Brande Roderick, 45, was 25 when she landed the April 2000 cover, which was followed by a 2001 Playmate of the Year title.
But, she says, 'I feel sexier in my 40s than I did in my 20s.'
Finally, the youngest of the bunch is Raquel Pomplun, 32, who was a Playmate in April 2012 at age 24 and the first Mexican American Playmate of the Year in 2013.
Raquel is the only one of the bunch to pose totally nude for the new shoot, baring her breast
