Jack Lang Proposes Bold Reforms to Revamp Educational System

Jack Lang, a former minister of education, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to overhaul the national school system. The proposal calls for a shift away from standardized testing toward portfolio‑based assessments that measure critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Lang argues that such changes will better prepare students for the demands of the 21st‑century economy.

Central to the reform is a new curriculum framework that integrates digital literacy, environmental science, and financial literacy across all grade levels. Teachers would receive continuous professional development to adapt classroom techniques to this blended approach. Funding for technology would be redirected from examination resources to classroom tech labs and maker spaces, ensuring that schools can implement the curriculum with state‑of‑the‑art tools.

The proposal also tackles teacher workload. Lang proposes an 80‑hour annual teaching limit and mandatory rest periods, claiming that less burnout will lead to higher quality instruction. In addition, the plan introduces a mentorship program linking experienced educators with newer teachers to foster knowledge sharing and reduce attrition.

Supporters of the plan highlight the potential for reduced socioeconomic disparities. By focusing less on test scores and more on individual progress, Lang believes students from low‑income backgrounds will experience greater academic equity. Critics, however, worry that the shift could dilute academic rigor and question the feasibility of such sweeping changes. The government will consider the proposal in upcoming budget discussions, with the possibility of pilot programs in selected districts before a nationwide rollout.
