Mar del PlataMar del Plata is a city on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It is the seat of General Pueyrredón district. Mar del Plata is the second largest city in Buenos Aires Province. The name "Mar del Plata" is short for "Mar del Río de la Plata," and means "sea of the Río de la Plata basin" or "adjoining sea to the (River) Plate region." Mar del Plata is one of the major fishing ports and the biggest seaside beach resort in Argentina. With a population of 682,605 as per the 2022 census [INDEC], it is the 5th largest city in Argentina.

The event was held on 24 August 2004 at the Athens Olympic Velodrome. There were 23 competitors from 23 nations, with each nation limited to one cyclist in the event. The event was won by Mikhail Ignatiev of Russia, the nation's first victory in the men's points race. Spain's Joan Llaneras, the defending champion, took silver; he was the first and only person (of any gender) to win multiple medals in the relatively short-lived points race, and ended with three medals after another gold in 2008. Guido Fulst of Germany took bronze, the first medal in the event for that nation since 1900.

Juan Martín del PotroJuan Martín del Potro (Spanish pronunciation: [xwam maɾˈtin del ˈpotɾo]; born 23 September 1988) is an Argentine former professional tennis player. He was ranked world No. 3 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), in August 2018. Del Potro won 22 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including a major at the 2009 US Open, where he defeated Rafael Nadal and the five-time defending champion Roger Federer en route. Del Potro's other career highlights include reaching the 2018 US Open final, winning an Olympic silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, winning Indian Wells in 2018, and leading Argentina to the 2016 Davis Cup title. Juan CuruchetJuan Esteban Curuchet (born 4 February 1965 in Mar del Plata) is an Argentine road bicycle racer and track cyclist. Curuchet represented Argentina at the Summer Olympics in 1984, 1988, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. He won the madison at the 1999 Pan American Games with his older brother, Gabriel Ovidio Curuchet. He also won the madison at the 2003 Pan American Games and 2007 Pan American Games alongside Walter Pérez and the Cycling World Championships in 2004 (Men's Madison). Curuchet holds an Argentine record of participating in six non-consecutive Olympic games. He retired from his Olympic career at age 43, by winning the Men's Madison gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics with Walter Pérez. In 2008, he received the gold Gold Olimpia Award as the best athlete of the year from his country with Walter Pérez. In 2000 and 2010 he won the Platinum Konex Award as the best cyclist of the last decade in Argentina.
