Douglas Gordon Arthur Lowe (7 August 1902 – 30 March 1981) was a British double Olympic Games champion, winning gold medals in 1924 and 1928. On both occasions he set British 800-metres records of 1:52.4 and 1:51.8 respectively, the latter also being an Olympic record.

John Curtis Thomas (March 3, 1941 – January 15, 2013) was an American track and field athlete who set several world records in the high jump using the straddle technique. As a youth, he earned the Eagle Scout award. At the age of 17, while a freshman at Boston University, Thomas became the first man to clear 7 feet (2.1 m) indoors. He subsequently pushed the world indoor record to 7 ft 1+1⁄2 in (2.172 m), and broke the world outdoor record three times, with a career best jump of 7 ft 3+3⁄4 in (2.229 m) in 1960, at the age of 19. Thomas' meteoric career briefly captivated the track world, but he failed to win an Olympic gold medal, despite being favored to win in both the 1960 and 1964 Games. In 1960, he settled for the bronze medal behind the USSR's Robert Shavlakadze (gold), and Valeriy Brumel (silver). Thomas's failure in 1960 on Thursday 1 September was accompanied by other failures that day by American favorites, and the day become known as 'Black Thursday'. In 1964 he was again beaten by Brumel, who cleared the same top height as Thomas, but was declared the winner based on fewer misses at lower heights. John Rambo won the bronze in 1964. Thomas is an inductee of the USATF Hall of Fame.

John Sheldon Collier (September 26, 1907 – October 31, 1984) was an American athlete who competed mainly in the 110 metre hurdles. Born in Buffalo, New York, he competed for the United States in the 1928 Summer Olympics held in Amsterdam, Netherlands in the 110 metre hurdles where he won the bronze medal.

John Barnett Rambo (August 9, 1943 – January 8, 2022) was an American professional basketball player and high jumper, who won a bronze medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

John Alun Adolphus Herbert (born 20 April 1962) is an English former sportsperson, who represented Great Britain as both a triple jumper and bobsleigh. Competing in athletics, he won the gold medal for England in the triple jump at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. He represented Great Britain at the 1984 Summer Olympics and 1988 Summer Olympics. He competed in the four-man bobsleigh event at the 1994 Winter Olympics (finishing in eighth place).

John Oliver Johnstone (January 21, 1892 – February, 1969) was an American track and field athlete who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics where he finished sixth in the high jump competition. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and died in Lancaster, Massachusetts. John Oliver Johnstone was raised in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was the son of Welsh immigrants James G Johnstone and Bloodwyn Hannah Oliver Johnstone and had one sister, Jenette. He spent much of his youth competing in track and field events throughout New England, attending the Edward Devotion School in Brookline and then going on to Worcester Academy before becoming the youngest member at the time to represent the USA in the Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. He was roommates with Jim Thorpe on the SS Finlandia, which took the team to Sweden. He graduated from Worcester Academy, where he attained status as World Schoolboy champion - winning American Athletic Association championships. He graduated from Harvard in 1916 and moved with his wife, Ann Catherine Temple Jones, to Lewiston, Maine, where he was a professor of French and the Track Coach at Bates College. In December 1921, John and Ann had a daughter, Lywena Temple. By 1924, he became a teacher and coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and moved his family to Worcester. He became active in the United Presbyterian Church. John and Ann's second child, John Oliver Johnstone II, died in infancy. The following year, John Oliver Johnstone III was born healthy and became known as "Jack". They lived in Holden, Massachusetts until 1966 when they retired. After retiring, John became a substitute teacher in the Worcester Public Schools. He died in February 1969.
