Warrant (American band)

Warrant is an American glam metal band formed in 1984 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, that experienced success from 1989 to 1996 with five albums reaching international sales of over 10 million. The band first came into the national spotlight with their double platinum debut album Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich (1989) and one of its singles, "Heaven", which reached No. 1 in Rolling Stone and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band's success continued in the early 1990s with the double platinum album Cherry Pie (1990), which provided the hit song of the same name. Following the critically-acclaimed gold album Dog Eat Dog (1992), the band started to experience frequent changes to the line-up and despite the drop in popularity with the arrival of grunge, they released Ultraphobic in 1995 and a successful greatest hits album in 1996. The band also changed their musical direction with the release of the grunge-influenced Belly to Belly in 1996, but returned to their roots very quickly by the end of the decade. The band experienced highs and lows in the 2000s with successful tours, a new covers album Under the Influence, lead singer Jani Lane leaving, a new album called Born Again with Black 'n Blue singer Jaime St. James and a brief reunion of the original line up. In 2011, Jani Lane died of alcohol poisoning. As of 2024, the band is still recording music and performing, now with former Lynch Mob lead vocalist Robert Mason.

Joey Allen

Joseph Alan Cagle, known professionally as Joey Allen, is best known as the lead guitarist of the American glam metal band Warrant. Allen was born as Joseph Alan Cagle on June 23, 1964, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and grew up in Irvine, California. His father is a retired electronics executive, while his mother worked for the Irvine Unified School District. He has two older sisters. Allen played in approximately 20 bands before joining Warrant. He endorses GMP guitars, Hughes and Kettner amplifiers and Dean Markley strings. In an interview, his bandmate and co-guitarist from Warrant Erik Turner states that "Joey is more of a technical player than me. I never really took a lot of lessons or studied. I just learned by jamming with different people, picking up stuff off records, or watching people play live. Joey is a true lead guitarist, and I'm a rhythm guitarist at heart who plays a little bit of lead." Allen met guitarist Erik Turner in 1979 and they formed the band Knightmare II. Erik Turner says he left the band before the recording of Knightmare II's Death Do Us Part EP. Allen is however on that EP, credited as Joe Kagle Allen left the band to attend trade school, earning an associate degree in electronic engineering in 1985. In the meantime, Turner had formed Warrant. Allen joined the band in March 1987. Allen has a daughter, Kylie Jo, born to he and his first wife in 1991. He is married to his second wife Shari and has a son, Kallan, who was born in 2012. In 1994, Allen left the band and became a Microsoft Certified Professional and went to work for a software company. During this time, he also played in a band called Joey Allen Project. In an interview in 1999, Joey revealed that it was his decision to leave Warrant. He left as Warrant's style of music was losing popularity because of the grunge movement and he did not want to go back to playing clubs. He rejoined Warrant in 2004 after ten years away from the band.

List of Warrant members

Warrant is an American glam metal band from Hollywood, California. The group was formed in summer 1984 by lead vocalist Adam Shore and drummer Max Asher (real name Max Mazursky). Also in the original line-up included were lead guitarist Josh Lewis, rhythm guitarist Erik Turner, and bassist Chris Vincent. Vincent was replaced after only three months by Jerry Dixon. Shore and Asher left in September 1986, with Turner bringing in Jani Lane and Steven Sweet from the group Plain Jane as their replacements. The following March, Joey Allen replaced Lewis. Warrant released its debut album Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich in 1989, which was followed by Cherry Pie the following year and Dog Eat Dog in 1992. Lane briefly left Warrant in March 1993 to start a solo career, but within 18 months had returned to the band. Prior to Lane's return, Allen also left in May 1994, followed by Sweet the following month; later in the year, they were replaced by Kingdom Come's Rick Steier and James Kottak, respectively. Kottak only remained for two years, with Bobby Borg taking his place after the release and touring of Ultraphobic. Borg left in 1997 and was replaced on tour by Vik Foxx and later Danny Wagner, the latter of whom had previously played keyboards for the group. Steier and Wagner both subsequently left the band in early 2000. Replacing Steier with Billy Morris and Wagner with Mike Fasano, Warrant released Under the Influence, an album of cover versions, in 2001. On April 2, 2003, Fasano was fired from the band by Lane, with Kevin Phares of the vocalist's solo band taking his place. Lane left Warrant for a second time in January 2004 to focus on his solo career, with the group announcing the return of Allen, Fasano and the addition of new frontman Jaime St. James the following month. By March, Fasano had been replaced by the returning Sweet, marking a reunion of the band's classic lineup with the exception of Lane. Born Again, the first Warrant album without Lane, was released in 2006. In early 2008, Lane returned to front Warrant for a third time. The reunion lasted less than a year, however, as Lane left for a final time in September and was replaced by former Lynch Mob frontman Robert Mason. Lane later died on August 11, 2011, of acute alcohol poisoning.
