The Republic-Ford JB-2, also known as the Thunderbug, KGW and LTV-N-2 Loon, was an American copy of the German V-1 flying bomb. Developed in 1944, and planned to be used in the Allied invasion of Japan (Operation Downfall), the JB-2 was never used in combat.
The JB-2 was a U.S.-made copy of the famous German V-1 surface-to-surface, pilotless flying bomb first used against England in June 1944. The Republic Aviation Corp. built the airframe for the JB-2 from drawings prepared at Wright Field, using dimensions taken from the remains of several V-1s brought from Germany.
The Loon, also called the JB-2 or KUW-1, was an American copy of the German pulsejet-powered V-1 or "Buzz Bomb" of World War II. It was designed to carry a 2,200-pound high explosive warhead to a range of 150 miles and could be launched from the ground, ships, or aircraft. The air-breathing pulsejet motor is the long tube at the rear.
The JB-2 was an American copy of the Fieseler V-1 flying bomb, an early cruise missile developed in Germany during World War II. The V-1 was designed as an inexpensive "vengeance weapon" which was launched across the English Channel in 1944-45, primarily at London. The fuselage was constructed of welded steel, and the wings were made of wood.
In September, 1944, Republic was awarded a contract to build exact duplicates of these V-1's, and in exactly two months time, the first operational JB-2's (Jet Bomb Model 2), rolled off their assembly lines. In all, some 1200 JB-2's were built by Republic, as well as several other contractors.
The JB-2's design and technology informed the development of advanced surface-to-surface tactical missile systems like the MGM-1 Matador and MGM-13 Mace. Its legacy was a testament to the rapid technological advancements of wartime and a precursor to the missile age.
