Adelaide woman pleads guilty to killing netballer friend in McLaren Vale crash, injuring five others
A young Adelaide woman cried in court as she admitted to killing her best friend and injuring five others in a crash south of Adelaide.
Grace Veronica Taylor, 22, of North Haven, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today to causing the death of Ivy-Rose Hughes by dangerous driving and five counts of causing harm by dangerous driving in February.
Ms Hughes, 19, was a passenger in the station wagon that Taylor was driving that collided head-on with another vehicle at a McLaren Vale intersection .
Ms Hughes died at the scene and seven other people were taken to hospital.
There was an outpouring of grief and shock for Ms Hughes, a promising young netballer .
Her former club, the Matrics, said she would be "forever a star".
"An incredible netballer and even more incredible young woman, the entire netball community has been saddened by this news," a club spokesperson said shortly after her death.
She was a bright spark and much loved throughout our club.
"Ivy is a star of our Premier League squad and has represented South Australia on numerous occasions and her impact on the netball community will not be forgotten," the club said.
The Salisbury Bulls sporting club said it was "deeply saddened" by the death of "an amazing young lady".
"Ivy was an amazing talent and beautiful soul," the club said.
Indoor Sports SA described her as an "extremely talented" young athlete and a "young superstar".
"Not only was she a wonderful netballer, but she was an even better person who always was seen with a smile on her face," the league said.
Taylor will be arraigned in the District Court in January.
