It's time to stop treating marginalized groups as if they are disabled, developmentally disabled children.
Strong_Shield_27137522It's time to stop treating marginalized groups as if they are disabled, developmentally disabled children. You can only be offended if you choose to be offended. And being offended on behalf of people who are not offended is idiotic.
We live in a world where people are constantly offended by something. Whether it's a joke that wasn't funny, or a Stores refusing to accept cash, there's always something that someone can find to be offended about. And often, people are quick to take offense on behalf of others, as if they are unable to speak for themselves.
This is particularly true when it comes to marginalized groups. We've seen it time and time again, where people will speak out against something, claiming that it's offensive to marginalized groups, even when those groups have not spoken out against it themselves.
This needs to stop. It's time to stop treating marginalized groups as if they are disabled, developmentally disabled children. Yes, there are some people within marginalized groups who may be offended by certain things. But that does not mean that everyone in that group is offended. And it certainly doesn't mean that we should be offended on their behalf.
There's nothing wrong with being offended. But we need to stop acting as if being offended is the same as being harmed. It's not. And if we continue to treat marginalized groups as if they are disabled, developmentally disabled children, we're only perpetuating the problem.
