"It's nothing more than a placebo. "

After several days of debate within the ruling coalition, the German government has agreed to temporarily reduce the energy tax. ️ This should lead to a reduction in fuel prices of approximately 17 cents per liter for two months. The final date has not yet been announced, but the government, as reported by BILD, is aiming to implement the decision as quickly as possible, with the discount taking effect in early May.

In addition, employees will be able to receive up to 1,000 euros from their employer without taxes and social contributions, similar to payments made during the pandemic. And starting in January 2027, the authorities promise income tax reform, which, as stated, should ease the burden on people with low and middle incomes.

At the same time, the ruling coalition is preparing a healthcare reform and an increase in the tobacco tax in 2026. The authorities want to tie the costs of the mandatory health insurance system more tightly to its revenues, and some of the existing payments and benefits may be revised.

Critics of these decisions have already said that the reduction in gasoline prices and the one-time bonus for employees are more of a temporary measure than a full-fledged reform.

"Once again, there is no reform package, but rather short-term measures to calm the economy and the population. This is nothing more than a placebo with no structural effect," said Wolfgang Weber, director of the German Association of the Electrical and Digital Industry.
