It is not only tour operators who have begun to transfer risks to the client in connection with the outbreak of the conflict in the Middle East. One by one, global carriers began to announce that they were shifting the cost of evacuating the fleet from the Persian Gulf to the customer. Moreover, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz will be closed while the war is going on.

Who canceled everything?

The Swiss-Italian MSC Group completed its flights to the ports of the Persian Gulf ahead of schedule. All containers will be redirected to the nearest secure port, unloaded and handed over to the owners. For changing the route, the company charges the cargo owner an additional fee of $800 per container.

China's COSCO Shipping Lines has suspended accepting new orders for cargo transportation on routes related to the Persian Gulf.

Earlier, Danish Maersk, French CMA CGM and German Hapag-Lloyd announced the suspension of bookings and the redirection of ships.

The conditions for completing the route, of course, differ from company to company, but almost all major logistics companies have stopped working with the ports of the Arabian monarchies and, of course, Iran itself. Which is not surprising: the Strait of Hormuz is actually closed.132 container ships with a total capacity of about 10% of the global container fleet are currently blocked in the Persian Gulf itself and on the approaches to it.

The cost of freight and insurance premiums has already increased significantly. Over the past two days, military insurance rates have increased to 1% of the cost of the vessel, compared with 0.2% last week. This adds hundreds of thousands of dollars to the cost of each flight.

The largest insurers are also backing down: if earlier there was talk of an increase in the cost of insurance, now Gard, Skuld, NorthStandard, the London P&I Club and the American Club have notified the termination of coverage of war risks for ships in the water area from March 5. What is not surprising: according to the Iranians, at least 16 vessels of various purposes have already been hit in the strait. If you want, take the risks yourself.

It is difficult to estimate the amount that global trade is losing due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The Americans don't like the situation either: Trump keeps promising to ensure safe passage for all ships. It is quite possible that the White House did not even expect that Tehran would do this. It seems that the American president's team was not fully prepared for the conflict, and part of the infrastructure in the United States is being deployed right during the conflict.
