Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade item s, the player must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.
Typically, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, whereas items with strong bases such as eth titans aren't affected much in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components are items that can be incorporated into weapons, armor, trinkets and gathering tools, giving an attribute bonus or additional effect while the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, found in loot, dropped by enemies or received as rewards from missions or chests. Some upgrades have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.
In order to upgrade an item of armor, the player has to select it, and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade statistics and the required component or materials.
There are three kinds of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be put in any type of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment are exactly the same as jewels but provide larger bonuses and cannot be used in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades that can be put in gathering tools, will add their names to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for instance adding an Glyph to an item that is a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would change it to a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs by a different one the old one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will damage it, with the exception of inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from previous versions. Gear is now categorized in tracks and each item can be upgraded so many times before it's "leveled out." The cost for upgrades is increased with each level, but the required materials don't increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a select few items and maximize the effect of those items, rather than spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
This will enable the item to receive upgraded components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy. It will reset to 0 if an upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
When a piece of equipment is upgraded to its highest level, it will be able to be given affixes that increase its features. The number of affixes that are available will depend on the item's base. For example an uncommon or exclusive weapon with a base that is standard will only have two affixes, while a legend armor will have eight affixes.
Each upgrade step will require a certain number of Flightstones and crests depending on the current level of the item and the item slot it's in. In general, weapons will require more Flightstones to upgrade than other types of equipment.
If an item fails to attain its maximum level, the NPC grants the player the option to transfer it to a different character and then re-infuse it with a different set or upgrades. This procedure can take as long as two hours and will cost the same amount of materials. However it has a lower rate of success.
To measure the height of a structure, engineers will utilize a level to compare the measurement against a known reference point such as a benchmark or the ground's elevation. This process is known as a "level-loop." This involves taking readings using the level, backsighting rod and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method makes sure that buildings are constructed to a high level of safety and accuracy.
Rerolling
Rerolling refers to the process of altering the upgrade components of an item. It is a crucial aspect of the game that can improve the strength, damage or other attributes. This can be done through the menu for items or by pressing the Reroll button of an upgraded item. Rerolling an item can be costly and should be done sparingly.
Reroll tokens are derived by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can be used to upgrade the original item or another similar item. In the past, certain upgrade items were affixed with priority that made them easier to roll for than others. This meant that you'd receive the stats that mattered most to your build more often than others. These included things like the armor's total armor, thorns, and control impaired duration reduction stats or the weapon's bonus attack speed and critical strike chance.
This changed with the recent patch. Priority affixes were removed, and all upgrades have the identical chance of rolling each statistic. This can be a good or a bad thing, dependent on your needs and expectations from your equipment.
Each upgraded item may be equipped with a special bonus that boosts the power of the item by a specific percentage or a flat amount. These bonuses are added to standard affixes. The more you improve a product, the better your chance of obtaining the bonus of a different kind.
The game also comes with several sets, which grant a set bonus when three or more upgraded items from the same set are equipped on the same unit. This is a great method of giving the character more power without spending a ton of money.
Many players prefer to reroll their gear and weapons, particularly in the beginning of the game. Rerolling can provide a much faster route to a more powerful character and allows them to climb higher levels and progress in the game much more quickly.

To determine if a product is worth upgrading, players can click the Upgrade button on their screen for their character. The item will be displayed with its attributes, along with the items needed to upgrade it.
