Upgrading gear increases its base stats and sometimes enhances its extras. The value of these upgrades is determined by the tiers of gear, their requirements and how many random augmentations are made available.

To upgrade equipment players must first locate the item, then click the "level up button". This will display a menu that shows the item's current status and what it will be after being upgraded, along with the required amount of Growth Stones to accomplish this. The number of Growth Stones needed to upgrade the item is determined by its rarity. Most often rare (blue) weapons require more than one green Growth Stone to reach their next level, whereas rare armor requires a single blue or green Growth Stone.
After deciding on what to upgrade, players need to select the number of green Growth Stones they wish to utilize and pay the appropriate cost. Once the requirements are satisfied, the user can then click on the upgrade button to apply the Growth Stones to the item. This will increase the item's level by a certain percentage. The upgrade process can last between a few seconds and minutes, based on the rarity of the item.
The upgrade process is completely risk-free and does not affect the durability of the item. Upgrade components are a kind of equipment that can be inserted into armor, weapons, trinkets, and gathering tools to provide an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, looted or obtained through questing or traded between players. Upgrade components can be swapped by acquiring new ones. However, this can destroy the old upgrade.
Requirements

These upgrades can come from many sources, including crafting, buying at the Trading Post, karma vendors or looting from raids and bosses. Once an upgrade element is placed in an item it can't be removed and changed without restriction, however, the glyphs that are used in gathering tools can be swapped without restriction.
The upgrade of an item can boost its Mark Level and/or Rarity. In addition, certain upgrade components come with additional modifiers which can further enhance the stats of the item.
For instance, the helm upgrade "Foundation of the Sun" boosts the base defense and adds an extra 20% chance to block. Additionally, the dps upgrade "Wildfire" increases damage to weapons.
Some items are better off being upgraded less for their increased stats, but for the fact that it lets players get the maximum amount of value out of a perfect roll on the item. A perfectly rolled 200/6500 armor set piece, for instance is highly sought-after by the melee PvP communities and could be worth up to 20-50 times the non-upp’d version.
If you choose an upgrade component to slot into an item, the game will display a pop-up window that shows the requirements required for that item. This includes the type of item (either weapon or armor) and the tier of the item as well as the upgrade Token required, and the amount of progress needed to complete the upgrade.
