Married couples flocking to the Tuscan countryside or the Eternal City this summer might want to think twice before accepting that generous dinner party invitation from the welcoming Italian couple. They might get more than they bargained for. If a new report is to be believed, it seems a quarter of all Italian couples regularly take part in wife swapping.
The revelation comes not from the seedier quarters of the country that gave the world Casanova, but from the usually po-faced pages of national broadsheet La Stampa. According to yesterday's front page article, entitled "The Lunch Time Swingers", an estimated 500,000 Italian couples are officially swapping partners at private sex clubs, with thousands more doing it in a more ad-hoc fashion in car parks, specially designated beaches or even cemeteries.
The report will have Italy's Catholic clergy shaking with anger at the congregation from their pulpit but when you consider the country's lothario leader, Silvio Berlusconi, it is perhaps not entirely surprising. This is the man, after all, who – in front of the international press corps gathered in the opulent quarters of Palazzo Chigi (the Italian version of Downing Street) – once tried to pimp his wife Veronica to the Danish Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
"Rasmussen is the most handsome Prime Minister in Europe. I think I will introduce him to my wife because he is even more handsome than Cacciari," Mr Berlusconi quipped, in a reference to his wife's alleged but subsequently denied fondness for the former mayor of Venice, Massimo Cacciari.
The La Stampa article, primly struggling with whether to call this new Italian predilection a "passion" or a "hobby", said wife swapping had increased everywhere "at a rate that makes you dizzy", largely because of the internet which had stripped away the taboos.
The source with which the newspaper arrived at the one-in-four figure was a Rome-based body called The International Federation for the Protection of Rights and Freedoms, or Federsex, for short. The organisation has 500,000 members that meet in 200 private clubs across Italy and swap partners, but the Federsex experts believe that is just the tip of the iceberg. They put the real figure closer to two million, or a quarter of the eight million sexually active couples across the country.
The average age of male participants is 43, while the swapped women tend to be younger at 35, and it is no longer a furtive after-dark activity but one that can "even take place during one's lunch hour." As one employee of the Club Malizia in Milan confirmed, "We see all sorts of people ... the thing that links them is that they have no money worries – accountants, doctors, even footballers and politicians."
The La Stampa investigation was triggered by the death last month of 27-year-old Dejan Delijevic, who was found hanging by his studded dog collar from a metal fence by the Magic Nuar club on the outskirts of Mantova. Appearing to be a sex game gone wrong, it was a case that titillated the nationà la Max Mosley, prompting the same soul-searching over sexual mores.
Establishments such as the Magic Nuar, far from being an aberration, are very much part of the married life of many an Italian couple, according to La Stampa. Lara, who grew up in the Sicilian town of Catania, recounted how she felt herself suffocating during her traditional upbringing, her father requiring her to be home by 9.30pm. She fled as soon as possible to a university education in Rome during which she met Luca, the man who introduced her to wife swapping.
Nowadays, Lara and her husband Luca leave the kids at home and go out for the night to have, as she puts it, "a nice evening of group sex."
Italy's most infamous player, Signor Casanova, once said "cultivating whatever gave pleasure to my senses was always the chief business of my life; I never found any occupation more important".
In these modern days, the catchphrase might be, to quote, one scambisti: "I love my husband. That is why I want to swap him."

Nice and clean, surprisingly so actually. The staff how ever not so nice. The practice a very different policy for some people. If you like to be miss treated and disrespected, this is the place for you! There are other places in GC, try those!

La mirage is a swingers resort, but the bar is limited undressed, lots of older people up to 70+,mostly old music from 70's, and lots of drinking, no kitchen tools for cooking, this place is okay but not super for the younger couples. Also wifi is horrible! No free wifi

was expensive to spend the day here and defiantly not worth the money there was not one sun lounger available the BBQ wasn't much better either. they rent out apartments around the pool hence no loungers available so im not sure how they think its ok to take peoples money for nothing really

My wife and I loved every minute of this complex. And are hoping to return if they are not booked up. So busy and full of great staff and a smashing place for a mind blowing holiday with a difference. Can't fault it.

Stayed two weeks this time, and so met a wide variety of people. The resort itself was much the same as previous visits, and the team were much the same, although there was a new lady working the bar (with two others) who was very happy and pleasant. We understand that there is to be a complete refurbishment of the complex during the summer, which is needed. Having said that, the rooms and grounds were still kept immaculately clean. The day we left, so we didn't experience it, they introduced a new "event" with a DJ and cheap drinks from 14.00, we think to keep their guests on site, instead of some going to Venus for the day, the latter did BBQ's, I think Tuesday & Saturdays. We hope, if it continues, that it works as Mirage can be very quite on those days. One change we didn't like was that the afternoon "happy hour" had been moved to 16.00 rather than 17.00, which although well attended, we felt a little too early. We are planning to go back next year, if we can get booked in. …

Our second visit was so different from our first. Mostly the same great team and cleanliness BUT the resort rooms are starting to look jaded. Our mattress was so uncomfortable and there were a few broken tiles in the bathroom. Great shower though. There was a "new" girl behind the bar, mainly in the afternoons and we felt it was like, "oh do I have to serve you" and if she smiled more than twice whilst we were there, we didn't see it. Having said that, the food was mostly good and the prices reasonable. Not sure if it was the crowd of mainly Brits that were there, but the 17.00 Happy Hour was no where near the fun it was last year, far too early in the day for the ladies wishing to dress up to feel okay doing this in full sunlight. On our last night there was entertainment, sadly it was at 19.00, so happy hour over, so most guests had left to get dressed to then go out and eat. Must have been disheartening for the entertainer, whose only audience were two couples who happened to walk past the bar whilst he was performing, they possibly felt compelled to stay. Still the same scenario with many couples going out to the clubs, which is fine until they then come back sitting outside and talking loudly till six in the morning. Although we are fine with the booking system (at most 10 months in advance) there were a few Brits that had been there many times, who were frustrated (perhaps not the best term) at not knowing when precisely they could book. We are booked in for next year, but a new venue has opened which has the potential to take custom away from Mirage. Another comment from a regular guest was that it would be much better if the apartments were better supplied with crockery, knifes, forks etc. …
Room Tip: If you don't want to be kept awake till the early hours, choose a room away from the bar area

Where nice place. Clean nice bungalow. Powerful air con. Friendly staff. Not enough sunbeds. But will go back again. Amazing.atmosfer like at home. Twice per day happy hour. Small shop if you need something lots of fun.

our first time at la mirage we loved it and so clean and friendly. everyone made us welcome and the fun was had in the daytime as well as the night time. loved going into town by taxi £5 and visiting a few clubs and making new friends along the way.

Never been before but have heard good things about the place and found it to be totally true. Only had three days and we loved every minute. The complex is spotless, staff always helpful nothing too much trouble, the playrooms again spotless and they did get used all the time. An eclectic group of people from all over Europe which was great no little clics but genuine people there to have a good time. Will certainly return
