Italian Codice Fiscale: How to Calculate Your Tax Code

Codice Fiscale Guide

The codice fiscale is Italy's 16-character tax identification code. Everyone — including foreigners moving to Italy — needs one to rent an apartment, open a bank account, get hired, or register with the health service. The calculation algorithm is public, so you can compute the theoretical code yourself.

How the 16 characters are built

3 letters from the surname (first 3 consonants), 3 from the first name (with a twist: names with 4+ consonants use the 1st, 3rd and 4th), 2 digits for the birth year, 1 letter for the month, 2 digits for the day (women add 40), 4 characters for the birthplace (Belfiore code of the Italian comune, or a Z-code for foreign countries), and a final control character.

Example

Mario Rossi, male, born 15 May 1980 in Rome: RSSMRA80E15H501Q.

Theoretical vs official

Online calculators return the theoretical code. Only the Agenzia delle Entrate issues the official one, and in case of omocodia (two people generating the same sequence) some digits are replaced with letters.

You can calculate your codice fiscale online for free (runs entirely in your browser, no data stored). Foreign-born? Read the guide for foreigners.
