In original image works, yeah, but it links to larger version of it that for some reason gives 404 (it was removed by error? wrong url? I don't know).

There's no way to check if there's image on that link or not in IV template. I can't use originals, cause they are too small and templates should not hardcode anything, but use universal solutions.

If we would not use linked images IV would have resized down to 640px on larger side versions of them, which is way off from recommended/accepted minimal resolution of 1280px from checklist.

If you insist that's a serious issue and not a one-off kindly provide more examples/more recent pages where it leads to problems because using scaled down to 640px versions for all images because of such single-offs cases is plain stupid.
