Ishizu Ishtar is a powerful female character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. Ishizu is a complex character--here are some things to know about her.
Ishizu Ishtar is a powerful female character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. The older sister of the villain Marik, she is first introduced working for Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, she travels to Japan where she becomes involved with the Battle City tournaments. There are many parts to her character. She is a capable duelist, even having once defeated her younger brother, a devoted sibling who also wants to save said brother, and even the reincarnation of an ancient priestess. That said, there are parts of her character that might surprise casual viewers.
Let's take a look at some interesting parts of Ishizu that some fans might not have noticed. And remember, because we're looking at different aspects of a character, spoilers abound.
To begin with, Ishizu's name is actually a matter of debate. It's generally accepted that her name is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of "Isis," a prominent female goddess from Egyptian mythology, especially made famous from stories concerning her relationship with her husband, Osiris, who she brings back to life from the dead. Because of this, there is some debate from fans if the character's name should be rendered "Isis" or "Ishizu." That said, her past life self seems to have the more phonetically correct form of Isis.
Interestingly enough, Ishizu is also a surname in Japan. Some notable figures with this last name are athletes Daisuke Ishizu and Sachie Ishizu, as well as voice actress Aya Ishizu.
When it comes to goddesses, Ishizu represents two for one, since her last name, Ishtar, is also derived from another female divinity. Ishtar is another name for the Mesopotamian goddess, Inanna, who had dominion over love and beauty, as well as war and politics. Under her new name, she was worshipped by various groups, like the Babylonians, and Assyrians.
In popular culture, Ishtar is often misremembered as an Egyptian goddess, such as in the movie Blood Feast , possibly due to being confused by the more famous Isis or thought to be an incarnation of her.
The world of Yu-Gi-Oh! is filled with fake psychics. There's Mai Valentine, who used perfume to make it look like she had some sort of sixth sense when it came to her cards . "Esper" Roba, also known as Espa Roba in the English dub, was even named after ESP, but he too was a fraud who figured out his opponent's cards by having his brothers spy on them.
Casual viewers might be surprised that Isis actually breaks the trend, as she actually has psychic powers. In fact, she's so devoted to her visions, she once turned down an easy victory because it contradicted the victory she already prophesized. This sort-of backfired when Kaiba managed to defy the vision and win, but she was actually happy to learn that fate could be changed, especially when it concerns her brother.
Her deck usually invokes Fairy cards , but they are usually Earth-themed, despite most Fairy cards being of the Light type. Don't let any preconceived notions of fairies fool you, either, because her monsters can look like everything from a mechanical doll, an ancient warrior, and a spirit that haunts graveyards.
When playing, one of her strategies is to return her opponent's cards to their deck so she can invoke the "Exchange of the Spirit" trap card, which kind of functions as her trump card.
Ishizu and Seto Kaiba actually have a lot in common if you think about it, especially when it comes to their families. They both have abusive relationships with their father figures. They both have a younger brother that they are protective of (Mokuba and Marik.) They both have an antagonistic relationship with a younger brother (Marik, once again, and Noah.)
And, in a way, they are kind of foils to each other: with her powers, she can be said to represent the past, and with his technology, Kaiba can be said to represent the future.
She has the Millennium Tauk or Necklace, which is where she gets her powers from , allowing her to see in both the past and the future. It had tremendous powers, like protecting its wearer from evil magic.
It's also notable that Ishizu never uses the necklace to perform Shadow Game or Penalty game magic, which is a power usually granted by the Millenium Puzzles. At the very least, audiences never see her do it, leaving fans to wonder if Ishizu simply has more self-control than the other owners or if the necklace doesn't give her this power.
One part of her character that might get lost in translation is the way she talks. In the Japanese version of the series, she tends to have a very formal way of speaking.
She likes to use "watakushi" as a personal pronoun. It's a very polite pronoun and is traditionally used for solemn events, reflecting Ishizu as both a formal and serious character.
It's a subtle part of her character, but it's implied that she might enjoy a vegetarian diet. In supplementary materials, she is said to dislike meat dishes.
By contrast, her favorite dish is Om Ali, which is Egypt's national dessert. While there isn't really a standard version, to the point where it can be served both hot and cold, it's often a pastry dish flavored with nuts, raisins, coconut, cinnamon, or sugar. It normally uses milk and cream, suggesting that Ishizu isn't vegan.
As a member of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, Ishizu's appearances aren't the only limited to manga and anime, she also appeared in a few video games, where she often has a prominent role.
In the games, Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards , she sort of serves as the player's mentor and helps to explain what's going on in the story. Interesting things can often happen to her, though, whether it's being kidnapped or obtaining powerful cards.
However, not all video games are alike. In Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses , she's actually something of an antagonist.
The story of the game revolves around the player travel back in time to the War of the Roses. Yugi takes the part of Henry Tudor and Ishizu, who is now known by her family name "Ishtar," sides with the Yorkists, who are sort of treated as the villains of the game. Interestingly enough, in the game, she is on the same side as Seto Kaiba, who takes on the role of Christian Rosenkreuz, and it's tempting to think it's a reference to their connection in other properties. That said, the player could still choose to side with the Yorkists .
