This week we learnt about what kind of stuff is made in China and what’s happening to the Yellow River. First, we watched a small film about what is happening to the Yellow River. After we watched the small film, we had to put a timeline in order of ancient China to modern China.
A new concept that I have about China now is that the pollution that is going on, including the Yellow River. The Yellow River is 5.5 thousand kilometres long and the pollution, from the side of the river, where all the factories are, are polluting the Yellow River. The Yellow River is dieing out because of the pollution from the factories beside the river and also because of 2/3 of the river are being extracted for feeding the people in China. The part that is mostly dieing out is down the lower part of the Yellow River. 70% of the Yellow River is undrinkable and you are unable to swim in it because of how much pollution is in it.
A question that I have about the Yellow River dieing is:
China knows that the Yellow River is dieing…so why doesn’t anyone do anything about it? Also, are people doing something about it?
Today I learnt about the Silk Road in IBL. The Silk Road was a road in Ancient China that went for 5,000 miles, from Xian to Rome. Xian was at the eastern end of the Silk Road. The Silk Road was made when the Han Dynasty (206BC – 9AD) was in power.
A new idea that I have had about Ancient China is about the Silk Road. I never knew that there was such a road of such a long distance (5,000 miles long) and that so many people drove across it. I wonder why the Silk Road was so popular back then if so many people died on it.
What has challenged my thinking today is that how can people go that long with only limited amounts of food and in such different climates? People in modern times now would just fly and if we didn’t have planes now or technology, i don’t see how we could make it. It just seems so different to me.
A question about the Silk road is, is the Silk Road still in use today like it was in Ancient time?
Also, Did one person ever cross it twice?
A new concept that I have thought for a very long time is that I thought they weren’t alone, but it turns out they were alone for thousands of years. What my idea in my head of China was very different from what I have learnt now.
What challenged my thinking this week was trying to think and find all of the natural barriers in China. Amelia was asking us what we thought some of the natural barriers were and I got a bit puzzled. It really challenged my thinking because I have never thought or done much work on China, so I didn’t really know what their natural barriers were, but some of the most obvious were the sea and the deserts. Some others were the Himalayas and the Gobi Desert.
My question this week is how long are some of the natural barriers around (or in) China? I have thought about this question hard this week and it has really got to me. I am mostly thinking about how long the Himalayas and the deserts go for.
Another question is mainly on the Himalayas. The question that I am asking is how many little mountains are in the Himalayas. When my class looked at a video, I was seeing a lot of different little mountains in the Himalayas.
What challenged my thinking today was that when I had to try and find all of the 14 countries around China. One of the countries had a little pathway of land leading onto the boarder of China. All the countries around China were very hard to find because some were very small and hard to find.
The interesting thing that I learnt today was that China has fourteen neighbouring countries around it. Some of them are Bangladesh, India, Macau and of course the big country up the top of China which is Russia. I also learnt that China has very different climates all around China. For example, in the west, there was high mountainous ares. The interesting part about that was that one country can have very different climates and whlst the west can be very cold and moutainous and the east can have cropland.
Today of what I have thought in the past of China was different. I have never thought that China had so many different climates. I thought that China was just either always hot or always cold and never had a clear idea of the climate in China. Now that I know of what China’s climate is like, I can now use this information in the following lessons on China.
What challenged my thinking today was about two of China’s rivers, they are the Yangtze River and the Hwang He River. I had to find them both on a map of China. I was surprised that they both were touching each other and how long they went on for! I never actually thought of China have really large rivers like the Yangtze and the Hwang He River.
What I have found interesting about China today was that civilisation in China started around rivers. That was because the place around rivers have lots of crop areas and they have lots of plants where they can eat from. Lots of plants grow around the rivers because of the water there.
My question about this lesson was that I was wondering how many governments or systems of government China has because it is such a large country. If China did have more than one type of govenment, I was wondering how much land or space that one government would cover.
I will be reflecting on my learning at the end of each lesson. These are some of the questions that will guide me in my reflection writing on my learning about Ancient China:
