Is a Graduated Meme Coin Safe? What Graduation Does and Does Not Tell You
MemeSwapOn pump.fun and similar launchpads, "graduated" has become shorthand for "made it." The token filled its bonding curve, moved to an open pool, and now trades like any other token. A lot of buyers treat that moment as a safety milestone: the token survived, so it must be legit.
It is a milestone. It is not a safety check. This guide explains what graduation actually is, why graduation rates cannot be compared between launchpads, the checks you still need to run, and why MemeSwap's upcoming launchpad is built to put safety in from the first block instead of hoping it shows up at graduation.
What graduation actually is
Most launchpads start a token on a bonding curve: a formula that sets the price purely from how much has been bought so far. There is no external liquidity at this stage; buyers are trading against the curve itself. When cumulative buying hits the venue's threshold, the curve closes and the accumulated proceeds seed a normal liquidity pool on a DEX. That transition is graduation.
From then on, the token trades against real depth, and price responds to supply and demand rather than to a formula.
Graduation therefore tells you exactly one thing: enough money went in to complete the curve. In the words of MemeSwap's graduation reference, it is "not an audit, not a liquidity lock, not a guarantee that a sell route persists, and not a statement about the team."
How rare is graduation?
Rare, on most venues. MemeSwap's recorder followed a cohort of 4,376 launches between Sept 3 and Sept 9, 2026, and 5.3% graduated. By venue, the rate ranged from 0% to 16.4%.
That spread is not a quality ranking, for three reasons:
- Each venue sets its own threshold. A low bar graduates many tokens; a high bar graduates few. Two venues can host identical tokens and report rates an order of magnitude apart.
- Automated deployment fills the denominator. Some venues attract scripted deployers that mint tokens continuously. MemeSwap's repeat creator research found addresses with 100 or more prior launches graduated at 0.1% in the cohort. A venue full of those will show a low rate regardless of everything else.
- Recorder coverage differs by venue. Where a detector sees fewer launches, the rate shifts for reasons unrelated to the tokens.
So: compare graduation within a venue, never across.
Why graduated tokens still rug
Everything that makes a token dangerous can survive graduation intact:
- Concentrated supply. If snipers or bundled wallets bought a large share on the curve, they still hold it after graduation, and now there is a real pool to sell into.
- The dev wallet. MemeSwap's recorder found creator sells at a median 141 seconds after launch. A creator who has not sold yet can still sell after graduation, now into a deeper pool.
- Contract powers. Graduation does not remove mint, freeze, pause or upgrade powers if they exist.
- Liquidity. Whether the new pool's liquidity is locked or burned depends on the venue's mechanics and the token. Check it rather than assume.
- Thin depth. A just-graduated pool may still be shallow. MemeSwap marks pages under $5,000 of liquidity as thin.
Graduation can even be a trigger. It is the first moment with a real pool, which makes it an attractive exit point for anyone holding a large position from the curve.
What to check on a graduated token
- Depth after graduation, not the badge. Can the pool absorb your exit near the chart price?
- Top holder share. Exclude the pool. If a few wallets hold most of the rest, treat it as concentrated.
- Dev wallet. Has the creator sold? All of it?
- Contract powers. Mint, freeze, pause, upgrade, blacklist, take-back.
- Taxes. Sell tax above buy tax, or a changeable tax, is a trap.
- Sell route. Make sure you can actually sell.
- Creator history. A rug on record ends the conversation.
Build safety in at launch, not at graduation
Graduation can't fix what happened on the curve. That's why MemeSwap's launchpad, coming soon, is built to put the protections at the start:
- Fair launch at open, built to stop snipers from grabbing the first block
- Bundle and sniper wallet detection
- Liquidity locked or burned automatically, built to stop liquidity pulls
- Dev token vesting or sell limits, built to stop day-one dev dumps
- Verified creators
- Solana and Base
Sniped and bundled supply, pullable liquidity and an unlimited dev bag are exactly the risks that survive graduation on open launchpads. MemeSwap's launchpad is built to address them before the first buy.
For tokens launched elsewhere, MemeSwap's launchpad hubs, like the pump.fun hub, list graduated tokens that also passed the MemeSwap Verified screen:
- Not a honeypot, no blacklist, no take-back function
- No unchecked mint, pause or upgrade powers
- Top holders under the concentration ceiling
- Enough liquidity and a pool old enough to judge
- A deployer with no rug on record, and not a copycat
- A live market and a working swap route
The screen re-runs every few minutes, and a listed coin is removed if its liquidity collapses or its pool disappears.
FAQ
What does graduated mean on pump.fun?
The token completed its bonding curve, and the raised SOL and remaining tokens moved into an open pool.
Is a graduated token safe to buy?
Not by itself. Graduation means enough money went in to fill the curve. It does not lock liquidity, remove contract powers or stop large holders from selling.
How is MemeSwap's launchpad different?
It's coming soon, and it's built to put protections in at launch: fair open, bundle and sniper wallet detection, liquidity locked or burned automatically, dev token vesting or sell limits and verified creators, on Solana and Base.
Why do graduation rates differ so much between launchpads?
Each launchpad sets its own threshold, some attract far more automated deployment, and data coverage differs. Compare within a venue only.
