League of Legends
MMO
League fans will soon be exploring the Runeterra universe.
Riot Games is taking the League of Legends franchise into another medium, with a massively-multiplayer online roleplaying game set in the Runeterra universe now being developed.
The League of Legends franchise has rolled into auto-battlers , trading cards , and fighting games , and raked in mainstream fans with a stellar Netflix series recently.
The Runeterra expansion isn’t slowing down either. Riot devs are now working on a new MMO title, set in their long-standing fantasy land, that will challenge genre heavyweights like World of Warcraft , Lost Ark , and Final Fantasy . Though the game is still a ways off, it’s expected to shake the gaming landscape.
Here’s absolutely everything you’ll need to know about Riot’s long-awaited MMO.
Unfortunately, Riot Games has yet to lock in any official release date for the League of Legends MMO though a late 2023 or even early 2024 release window looks likely considering when development began behind the scenes.
In 2020, several Riot devs confirmed the MMO’s existence after months of silence. It stands to reason a four to five-year development cycle isn’t out of the question.
League of Legends boasts one of the most expensive fantasy worlds in gaming, with Runeterra—the title’s universe—spanning thirteen diverse regions. Dot Esports expects some elements from all these places will be in the game.
It’s likely the League MMO will focus on popular Runeterra regions like Demacia, Ionia, and Arcane’s stomping grounds, the twin-cities of Piltover and Zaun. Fantastical regions like Bandle City, Shurima, and the Shadow Isles will probably be utilized as adventure areas and Raid settings.
Here’s the full list of Runeterra regions:
There’s every chance some regions are saved for future MMO expansions, like trading card game Legends of Runeterra did in 2020, but only time will tell at this stage.
Riot Games has yet to actually confirm their new League of Legends MMO title will be established in Runeterra, but considering how they’ve gone about developing their fantasy world in the past, it would be a major shock for the roleplaying title to take long-standing franchise fans to a different universe.
Here’s what the League MMO map should look like in-game.
Riot Games has the perfect setup for their League MMO ready-made with their current champion classes from their flagship MOBA title. There are six primary classes (all of which have been listed below) and then between two and three subclasses in each—except the marksman, which stands alone.
Here’s each League of Legends class and subclass.
Some variation of these classic fantasy roles should be present in the MMO title. Dot Esports tips Enchanter, Juggernaut, Battlemage, Marksman, Assassin, and Warden to be the six starting classes in the upcoming game—talk about a solid blend.
League MMO lead producer Greg Street, who pivoted from working on the company’s flagship title in 2020, has said that end-game Raids are one the most important factors in the title’s development. He has even suggested he will be “crushed” if his team doesn’t actually hit the mark with their endgame designs.
Street previously said, “Anyone that knows me from my World of Warcraft developer days would know that I love dungeons and raids as a player.”
The upcoming MMO has several great bosses to draw on already too, including Baron Nashor, Elder Drake, and any of the 159 champions in League of Legends .
For now, that’s everything we know about the League MMO . Title development continues behind the scenes, with Greg Street still leading the production. The head dev did warn players that “not everyone will love every feature… [and] we won’t make choices that everyone agrees with,” so keep those expectations tempered!

It was with surprise that the video game world learned of the release of Ruined King: A League of Legends Story. The Airship Syndicate tactical RPG is already available and offers a new experience in the world of LoL.
[Mis à jour le 17 novembre à 11h51] This is news that we expected more. Riot Games, and more specifically its development studio Riot Forge, took everyone by surprise when they announced the release of Ruined King: A League of Legends Story. This tactical RPG developed by Airship Syndicate (Darksiders Genesis) offers us an entirely new experience by transporting us on an adventure in the universe of the most famous MOBA. A turn-based experience that has the gift of seducing and in which we can find different champions present in League of Legends. The opportunity also to develop a little more a prolific universe that the world discovers a little more every day thanks to the Arcane series in particular. Price, config, gameplay, platforms … We explain everything to you.
As we told you in the introduction, Ruined King is a tactical RPG entirely focused on the League of Legends universe. There are different characters well known to MOBA players: Illaoi, Miss Fortune, Pyke, Braum, Yasuo, Ahri and of course, Viego. There are exploration sequences as well as turn-based combat, all in a “cartoon” style very pleasant to watch. As for the plot, it will center on the story of Viego, the Fallen King, and his influence on the mysterious and evil Isles of Shadows. A journey to the heart of the most dangerous regions of Runeterra and an opportunity to immerse yourself a little more in the complex universe of Riot Games’ MOBA.
Ruined King: A League of Legends Story is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One for a modest price of 29,99 euros . We already know that the game will also be released on next-gen consoles, with PS5 and Xbox Series X | S versions coming out a little later. On PC, it can be found in the Steam, Epic Games and GOG stores. It has been available since November 16, a release that was expected given the two development postponements it had undergone in late 2020 and early 2021. Ruined King is a production by Riot Forge and Airship Syndicate, a studio expert in Tactical RPGs that can also be found behind the excellent Battle Chasers: Nightwar.
Riot Games is not used to providing games exclusively for high-end configuration owners and Ruined King is no exception to the rule, the proof: it is also released on Nintendo Switch. It will therefore be necessary to have a quite modest configuration to be able to appreciate this tactical RPG in HD and at 30 FPS. In addition, hard disk level, count a little more than 15 Gb of available space to be able to install it. On the RAM side, you will still need 8 GB of RAM to run it in the best conditions. Here are the detailed minimum and recommended configurations:

Introducing the first ever League of Legends game on console
Riot has announced that League of Legends will be headed to consoles for the first time ever (sort of), with the release of spin-off game Ruined King: A League of Legends Story.
Set in the world of Runeterra (opens in new tab) , Ruined King will be a singleplayer RPG with turn-based combat.
You'll venture through two regions of Runeterra – Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles – and form an unlikely party of beloved League of Legends champions like Miss Fortune, Illaoi, Braum, Yasuo, Ahri, and Pyke.
The game will launch early 2021 and it will be available on Switch, PS4, Xbox and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Ruined King will also be available on PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S systems, allowing players who bought it on the older consoles to upgrade their version for free.
Head of Riot Forge at Riot Games, Leanne Loombe, explained in a press release that "Ruined King is a great way to expand the world of Runeterra for brand new players as well as our dedicated League of Legends (LoL) fans.”
Developed by Airship Syndicate (Battle Chasers: Nightwar and Darksiders Genesis), it will be the first game published by Riot Forge.
“We couldn’t resist the chance to work with Riot Forge to expand the epic world of Runeterra,” said Joe Madureira, CEO of Airship Syndicate, and comic book artist of note. “These are some of our own favorite champions, and we can’t wait for players to see how we brought the characters, creatures, and environments of Runeterra to life.”
Riot Forge will have more to say about Ruined King: A League of Legends Story in December. We'll keep you updated on it.
