Jimmy Dean passed away on June 13th, 2010 at the age of 81 (born August 10th, 1928).
Yup, that’s still Jimmy’s voice you’re hearing in those ads. This article explains why.
And here’s Jimmy’s voice in fine form in this classic.
Jimmy Dean died nearly nine years ago and his music/TV fame faded long before that. Why, then, does his sausage company continue to use his voice (or a facsimile thereof) in its advertising?

Was James Dean driving when he died?
Jimmy Dean died in 2010. He made his last commercial in 2004. In 2018 Sara Lee Corp, owner of Jimmy Dean Sausage, began to re air the old commercials as a way to boost sales. He has not returned from ‘the great beyond’ to shoot new commercials.

Was James Dean driving when he died?
Here´s a detailed story of what happened on that fateful day: When James Dean was on his way to the race in Salinas in 1955, he took his mechanic with himself. The guy was German, his name was Rolf Wütherich, and he was one of the only two (!) Porsche specialists sent by Porsche to the United States. This is the guy himself. He was 29 years old.
Now, lots of people who witnessed the accident said that it was really Rolf who was driving the car. And he might have, at one point, but most probably, the car was really driven by James Dean when the accident happened. Wanna see photographic evidence?

Now, lots of people who witnessed the accident said that it was really Rolf who was driving the car. And he might have, at one point, but most probably, the car was really driven by James Dean when the accident happened. Wanna see photographic evidence? Here it is. The picture was taken by Sanford Roth, a paparazzo / photographer / a friend of James Dean´s, who was in the car behind him.
The trouble is, the picture was taken when James & Co. were all still in Los Angeles. They are leaving the gas station here. That is why it is unblurred. From then on, James only stopped twice. First he got a speeding ticket, so he slowed down from 100 MPH to 65 MPH. The speed limit was 55 MPH, though. Anyway, here is the ticket:
James´last stop was here, at the Blackwell Corner General Store, where he bought a bottle of Coca-Cola and a paper bag full of green apples. He ate one. I dunno what Rold had. This is the store in its current look:
And see that big three? The one on the left. There James parked his car, and because he had a terrible headache and hadn´t slept much during the previous night, Rolf said: “Let me take over the wheel. I´ll drive for you and you will get a rest.” But James did not want to hand over the car. He said he wanted to “open it up” before the actual car race they were heading to (it was set to take place in two days, I guess). A quarrel ensued, which James resolved by walking away angrily (that was his usual reaction, people who knew James were used to him giving them a cold shoulder). Rolf was angry and disgusted with James. IMHO, he must have been thinking that he was forced to deal with a stubborn 7 year-old. So he said: “Fine, whatever, drive.” And James stopped in his tracks, went angrily back to the car and sped away.
They were going this way (pictured below). It used to be called Highway 46 in 1955, today it is called Highway 466 (it was renamed). But as you can see in this picture, the route of the highway was later changed. Can you see the remnant of the original track in yellow? The long yellow line on the right side. THAT was the track on which was James riding his car:
And this is the exact crash spot as it looks now. The crash itself happen on the intersection but this is where James´ car landed after being hit by the Ford driven by Turnupseed. There used to be a long wooden telegraph pole in 1955. Now it´s gone:
And thsi is a photo from the actual crash. The tall young guy standing there is the driver of the opposite car, a Cal Tech student named Donald Turnupseed. The injured person lying behind his legs is not James Dean but Rolf Wutherich who was carried there so that the ambulance men could lay him on the prepared stretcher:
James Dean himself was already dead or deep in coma by the time these guys arrived on the crash scene. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the nearby hospital. Now this is the accident scheme:
When they found him in the car, he was sitting in the driver´s seat and his body was leaning towards the passenger´s seat. Rolf was thrown from the car upon the hit, and landed on the intersection face down. His legs were badly injured, his collar bone completely shattered, and he had severe injuries on his head. But he lived. He was suffering from pain for the rest of his life and absolutely refused to speak of the accident ever again.
However, James´injuries were much worse. His collar bone was shattered, if I remember well, his head was nearly chooped off, the stirring wheel was pressed into his chest, so his torso was smashed by the wheel AND also by the side crash. Also, one of his legs was badly mangled. There was no way he could survive it.

The person and their name that becomes associated with a company, especially one that has done so well as the two above, has no reason to change their name and logos just because the person died.
These people and their name become the brand, there is no separation.

I’ll bet that’s a topic that you’d be interested in investigating.

It is indeed Jimmy Dean, the singer. I listen to “Big Bad John” on one of my playlists every now and then, and he sounds just as good as ever.
But my best memory of Jimmy Dean is when he played the reclusive Willard Whyte in Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

The advertising company has decided the old ads were good enough, with a few new twists. VERIFY: Is Jimmy Dean's real voice used in new commercials?
I worked for Perdue for a few years and got to meet both Frank and Jim Perdue. Both authentic, hard working guys who also did ads for protein products. It seems that the American consumer is most comfortable with their meat when it is sold by a folksy, good old boy.

The narrative was recorded for commercials a long time ago, and dubbed onto the new commercials. The script never changed, just the visuals.
