The DanMachi Season 5 anime will have Bell Cranel wrestling with romance and conspiracies as the Labyrinth City Orario celebrates the two great festivals. But since the story of the anime series is catching up to the latest light novel, DanMachi Volume 18 , when will Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 5 come out?
Similar to how the fourth season was named New Chapter: The Labyrinth Arc, it’s predicted that the official title for Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 5 (Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka? Season 5) will be a reference to the Freya Familia and/or the Great Faction War. The new DanMachi story arc runs from light novel Volumes 16 through 18 (at least).
The main staff and studio making DanMachi Season 5 hasn’t been announced yet.
In the past, the anime series was produced by Japanese animation studio J.C. Staff, which in recent times has been best known for the KonoSuba movie (Studio Drive is making the KonoSuba Season 3 anime ), A Certain Scientific Railgun , One Punch Man Season 2 (and, hopefully, One Punch Man Season 3 ), and the Food Wars! anime series.
Most of the main animation staff at studio J.C. Staff returned for the fourth season, but there were some major changes.
After the first season, Yoshiki Yamakawa was replaced by director Hideki Tachibana, who is best known for directing BlazBlue: Alter Memory, Armed Girl’s Machiavellism, and Circlet Princess. Tachibana remained the director for the fourth season so hopefully, he’ll return for DanMachi Season 5.
For the first three seasons, Hideki Shirane wrote the scripts and series composition alone. For the fourth season, original light novel author Fujino Omori directly joined the anime staff for the first time as a series script supervisor and as a series composition writer.
Let’s hope that Omori returns for making DanMachi Season 5, as well. After all, light novel readers can’t complain (too much) that the anime is not faithful to the source material since the original creator is adapting the story as he intends it to be watched in the animated episodic TV format.
Otherwise, most of the main staff remained the same for the fourth season. Shigeki Kimoto (A Certain Magical Index) was the Character Designer and Chief Animation Director. Jin Aketagawa ( Golden Kamuy Season 4 , The Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 2, Uncle From Another World, Kaguya-sama: Love is War ) was the Sound Director. Composer Keiji Inai ( Slime 300 , The Misfit of Demon King Academy Season 2 ) created the music.
The DanMachi Season 5 OP (opening) and ED (ending) theme song music hasn’t been announced yet.
The Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 OP “Tentou” was performed by sajou no hana, while the ED “Guide” was performed by Saori Hayami.
DanMachi S4 was released in late July 2022 during the Summer 2022 anime season. Anime news leaker Sugoi LITE claims that DanMachi S4 will have 2 parts/cours with a total of 22 episodes. This information hasn’t been confirmed by an official source such as the Blu-Ray/DVD page on the official website.
If true, the fourth season’s finale, DanMachi Season 4 Part 2, will release in December 2022.
This article provides everything that is known about DanMachi Season 5 (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 5/Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Season 5) and all related news. As such, this article will be updated over time with news, rumors, and analysis. Meanwhile, let’s delve down into what is known for certain.
The third season of the anime series was streaming on Crunchyroll and VRV. The fourth season was streaming exclusively on HIDIVE.
Want to watch Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 5 streaming in the future? Unfortunately, the DanMachi anime series will likely continue to be a HIDIVE exclusive since Sentai Filmworks is the streaming licensor.
The reason is that Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix lost the streaming licensing rights after Sony purchased both Crunchyroll and Funimation. In late March 2022, DanMachi Season 1 was removed from Crunchyroll, and the fourth season was reserved for HIDIVE by Sentai Filmworks.
As of August 2022, DanMachi Seasons 2 and 3 were still streaming on Crunchyroll , but it’s possible those licensing agreements will expire over time. Netflix USA was streaming only Season 1 for a time whereas Hulu was up to Season 2 at one time, but now both Netflix USA and Hulu stopped streaming the episodes due to the change in the licensing agreements.
The new DanMachi Season 5 cast members will include relatively minor side characters since most of the plot focuses on the main characters.
In the first three seasons, Japanese voice actors Yoshitsugu Matsuoka voiced Bell Cranel, Inori Minase portrayed Hestia, and Saori Oonishi was Ais Wallenstein. For the DanMachi English dub, Bell was voiced by Bryson Baugus, and Ais was played by Shelley Calene-Black.
On July 30, 2022, HIDIVE revealed during Otakon 2022 that the DanMachi Season 4 English dub release date would be in Fall 2022.
Since HIDIVE has taken up the mantle for in-house dubbing its exclusive titles that means a DanMachi Season 5 English dub should happen in the future. Let’s just hope they also mimick Crunchyroll with its SimulDub release schedule.
As of the last update, Studio J.C. Staff, Warner Bros. Japan, producers KlockWorx and Egg Firm, or any company related to the production of the anime have not officially confirmed the DanMachi Season 5 release date. Nor has the production of a Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 5 sequel been announced.
Once the news is officially confirmed this article will be updated with the relevant information.
In the meantime, it’s possible to speculate about when, or if, the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 5 release date will occur in the future.
The question is if the anime TV show is maintaining its popularity to the point that the anime production committee can justify having DanMachi renewed again. In recent years, international streaming revenue has replaced Blu-Ray/DVD sales as the biggest factor for financial success, but disc volume sales are still an indicator of how the Japanese perceive an anime series.
The first season sold 5,200 copies in its first week in 2015, whereas the second season sold 2,663 disc volumes in 2019, and the third season sold 2,224 copies in late 2020. To this day, it’s still considered a rule of thumb that an anime season is successful if the first week of disc sales exceeds 3,000 copies.
(Keep in mind that anime such as My Hero Academia have been regularly selling less than 3,000 in the first week yet are regularly renewed. MHA Season 5 Volume 1 only sold around 1,900 BD/DVD copies in its first week back in 2021. So that’s a good example of why disc sales are no longer considered a reliable measure of success in the anime industry.)
As for streaming popularity, Crunchyroll revealed in 2019 that the second season of DanMachi was in the top 20 for most popular anime during the summer 2019 anime season. However, DanMachi Season 3 didn’t make the list for the world’s most popular anime on Crunchyroll in 2020 (even Onyx Equinox somehow made the list!).
Arguably, DanMachi IV has a more intense storyline, and the direct involvement of author Fujino Omori should appease Japanese light novel purists, so it’s possible series’ popularity in Japan and worldwide could improve. But even if the fifth season is renewed, it’s predicted that the DanMachi S5 release date won’t come quickly due to the light novels.
In the past, there was a large gap between the first and second anime seasons largely due to the lack of source material back in 2015. Over the course of several years, the situation changed since many more light novels were published. Thus, anime fans were blessed with back-to-back DanMachi anime seasons in 2019 and 2020, with the fourth season not too far behind in 2022.
But the anime series has been slowly catching up to the light novels again. Based on the plot progression of the DanMachi Freya story arc (and without getting into spoilers) it appears that the arc could be three books and end in the currently unreleased DanMachi Volume 18.
Supposedly, the Freya arc was supposed to finish in Volume 17, but the book grew so long that it was split into two light novels. (That also happened to the Overlord series, which is why Overlord Volume 18 is ending the light novel series.)
But writers often change their plans as new inspiration hits (or they trash and rewrite their story). And it’s possible that the Freya Familia arc could extend into DanMachi Volume 19. In that case, the DanMachi Season 5 release date would definitely be pushed back by at least a year.
In addition, the DanMachi Volume 18 release date is still just confirmed for this “Winter” as of July 22, 2022. That could mean late Fall 2022 or Winter 2023 (January to March 2023). The publisher hasn’t narrowed down the release window since the initial early June 2022 announcement.
Presumably, the fact that DanMachi creator Omori is directly involved in the anime production affects his book writing work schedule. He’s also busy with writing Sword Oratoria Volume 13, the Astrea Records novelization, and the new magical dungeon-adventure fantasy series Wistoria: Wand and Sword.
In any case, it’s predicted that in the best-case scenario the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 5 release date will be in 2024 at the earliest. And then we’ll have a very long wait for DanMachi Season 6… which could be filled in with another DanMachi movie with an original story.
The story for the DanMachi Season 5 anime TV series is based on the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no ha Machigatteiru Darou ka?) light novel series by author Fujino Omori and illustrator Suzuhito Yasuda.
As of April 22, 2021, the books were up to DanMachi Volume 17. (As previously mentioned, the DanMachi Volume 18 release date is in the Fall 2022 – Winter 2023 time frame.
The main series has generated two major DanMachi spin-off stories. Familia Chronicle is limited to the 2017 Episode Ryuu and the 2019 Episode Freya right now, although the author has discussed writing about more characters and groups in the future.
The more substantial spinoff, DanMachi: Sword Oratoria, focuses on the adventures of Ais Wallenstein. It features a parallel timeline that begins before Bell is introduced.
The Sword Oratoria light novel and manga series are already up to Volume 12 and Volume 22, respectively. The author has already stated that once DanMachi Volume 18 is out he’ll turn to finish Sword Oratoria Volume 13.
The DanMachi light novel and manga series’s official English translation is being published in North America by Yen Press . As of August 30, 2022, the official light novel English translations reached Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? Volume 17.
The release date for the English DanMachi Volume 18 has not yet been announced.
The DanMachi manga series is adapting all three storylines. The main story for the manga is written by Omori himself and illustrated by Kunieda.
DanMachi manga Volume 10 was released in June 2018, but the DanMachi manga went on indefinite hiatus in September 2018. Eventually, the manga resumed, and Volume 11 was released on July 22, 2020.
DanMachi manga Volume 11 restarted the numbering, and its official title is DanMachi II Volume 1 (or DanMachi Season 2 Volume 1). As of December 2021, the new manga is up to DanMach II Volume 3, which includes up through Chapter 21.
The second DanMachi manga series began adapting the red light district story arc that was covered by anime Season 2. Unfortunately, that means the main manga’s story is far behind the anime series.
As for the English DanMachi manga series, Yen Press actually caught up with the Japanese release as of May 3, 2022, except for manga DanMachi II Volume 3.
The first season of the anime series adapted the first five books. When the TV show first aired back in 2015, the anime was already starting to catch up with the source material (Volume 7 was released in April 2015).
The anime has plenty of source material available to adapt since the second season adapted only three books, Volumes 6, 7, and 8, while the third season adapted Volumes 9, 10, and 11.
Part of the reason that the book adaptation rate slowed down was the books dramatically increased in story length. In English, the first five books ranged from 208 pages to 288 pages long, while Volume 6 was 272 pages, Volume 7 jumped up to 384 pages, and then Volume 8 was 400 pages!
Volume 8 was mostly composed of side stories, so when the J.C. Staff writers condensed the plot for Season 2, they completely skipped chapters focused on developing side characters. Since Volume 8 is a series of vignettes, it’d make sense to adapt some of them as DanMachi OVA episodes.
The writers’ task became easier for Season 3. Volumes 9, 10, and 11 averaged close to 300 pages each, so the result was that light novel fans were far happier with the third season since it didn’t have to skip as many details.
Sure, inner monologues were not conveyed to anime audiences, and some detailed explanations were heavily condensed. Still, book readers know they can’t expect an anime to wedge everything into the standard 12-episode TV format.
The only negative is that the anime’s beginning didn’t quite have enough runtime (despite shifting the OP to the end) to adequately convey that feeling of dread that Wiene felt as she was born into this world looking for acceptance only to be rejected, chased, and beaten repeatedly.
The positive aspect of the first three episodes’ initial fast pacing is that nine episodes adapted the remaining two books. Considering the real meat of the Xenos arc comes later in Volume 11, it was a wise choice on the part of J.C. Staff. Volume 11 was the best stopping point for the third season since the book finishes a complete DanMachi story arc, and Volume 12 shifts the focus away from the Xenos.
All in all, it’s predicted that the fourth season’s finale, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 22, will find a stopping point corresponding to light novel Volume 15.
The adaptation pacing of DanMachi S4 should be perfect since four books will be adapted by 22 episodes. The only question is if the ending of the fourth season will resemble the 2nd season finale.
Volume 15 is similar to Volume 8 in that it’s largely a series of vignettes where each chapter focuses on a different character. The difference is that it portrays the aftermath of the Dungeon expedition, which must be adapted by the anime, and a combination of daily life stories and memories of the past where characters reflect back on the path they’ve taken to reach this point.
It’s possible that DanMachi IV will skip some of these backstories similar to how the 2nd season only adapted the main plot points of Volume 8.
But one important plot point that the anime can’t skip is the Elegia Festival contained in the Volume 15 epilogue. It’s the perfect stopping point for the fourth season since the festival was a day to mourn and celebrate the lives of fallen heroes. The ending contains a touching moment between Bell and Ais where he begins to harbor suspicions about Ais Wallenstein’s connection to the Mercenary King Waldstein when Bell discovers Ais staring at the grave of Albert Wadstein.
Ending at this point would perfectly set up the DanMachi Season 5 anime to be a single cour season that once again adapts only three light novel books. Better yet, English-speaking fans who want to read ahead can jump to Volume 16.
Note: This article assumes that Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 5 will adapt light novel Volumes 16 through 18. This story summary attempts to highlight certain details without revealing specific major spoilers, especially in regards to Syr.
While the dungeon can threaten life and limb, Bell quickly realizes that the same thing can happen if he’s not careful around women. The story begins with Syr inviting Bell on a date to the harvest Goddess festival, the second of the two great festivals after Elegia that celebrates fertility.
“For Bell. At this goddess festival, would you please go on a date with me?”
The invitation was delivered by letter from Horn of the Freya Familia, who was known as the goddess’ attendant. In short order, Bell essentially finds himself kidnapped by a handsome older gentleman named Hedin!
You see, the Freya Familia is taking this Bell x Syr date very seriously and it’s an offer that can’t be refused. Hedin even threatens to destroy the Hestia Familia if Bell refuses. Hedin’s goal is to whip Bell into shape by transforming him into a gentleman ladykiller… within a week!
To pull this off, part of the “training” involves dragging Bell to the dungeon and commanding that he save girls from danger while acting charming at the same time. One incident so surprised Cassandra that she turned bright red and passed out in shock!
When the three-day Goddess Festival arrived, everyone is spying on their date. Hestia. Ryuu. Sword Princess Ais. The Freya Familia. The Hostess of Fertility waitresses. Everyone.
Hedin’s training actually worked since Bell wasn’t his usual nervous self where he quickly became embarrassed around women. Instead, Bell acted cool around Syr and even gallantly stopped a thief from stealing from her handbag. The difference in his attitude was remarkable enough to get everyone talking… and Syr certainly noticed.
The date involved multiple events and went well enough for Bell up until the point that he interacted with Ais. When Syr got mad at how Bell behaved around the other woman, he got flustered and let it slip out that his “Master” hadn’t taught him how to deal with such a situation.
When Syr realized that Bell was dressed similar to Hedin, that’s when it all came spilling out about the secret training. While Syr thought it was weird, she realized Bell was sincere in his motivations for taking her on a date so she decided to forgive him… if he did her a favor.
The favor was that Bell would help Syr escape the ever-watching eyes of the Freya Familia. Using magical items, they managed to evade their followers and continued their date without oversight for a few hours. They even had a private moment where Syr asked Bell if he would change his mind about her if she revealed a major secret.
But any secret-revealing would have to wait since the Freya Familia members eventually caught up. A dinner meal at a fancy restaurant immediately transformed into a fracas where Ais started fighting the Freya Familia.
Bell and Syra manage to escape, but only by plunging into cold water and swimming to freedom from watching eyes. Shivering from the wet clothing, they find a place where they can change at an inn. Which happens to be a room with only a single bed.
The next thing Bell knows, Syr is attempting to seduce him, but when an image of Ais appears in Bell’s mind he pushes Syr away. At this, Syr’s demeanor changes completely and she looked at Bell in a way he’d n
