The iRobot Roomba 980, the most recent of a series of top-of-the-line robot vacuums, is a staple for any modern home. This model comes with a HEPA-filter that will help those who are allergic. It also has a large battery that can be cleaned for up to two hours and returns to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

It also comes with the feature of smart mapping that uses multiple sensors to identify the areas in your home that require attention and create a cleaning path around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of moving around toys that have been left scattered on the floor, or furniture legs that stick out of the ground. It also has a camera that can snap the Roomba back to its original position when it starts drifting away from its original location.

iRobot has also included the option of rolling rollers under the Roomba which do not have bristles and are therefore more likely to avoid knots than earlier models. They're also taller than previous rollers and can better fit under beds and couches with low sides, and they're designed to allow this model to move more easily across a variety of floor kinds.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other high-end models however, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature that uses cameras to detect bits of embedded dirt. This is an improvement over the previous model which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and scrub everything three times at different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored highly on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. best robot vacuum and mop did a great job collecting pet hair, however it struggled with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and isn't even close to being as expensive as the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It still has a lot of features that we'd expect to see in a top-of-the-line model however, it doesn't come with all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that are found in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready for use right away. After taking off the yellow bin insert and the battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you simply plug it into the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will automatically return to the dock when it runs out of battery or is full of sand. There are also indicators at the top of the bin that let you know the bin is empty, when it is in need of recharging or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
