Season 2 of the Netflix Iron Fist is head and shoulders better and above the almost unredeemed first season. While not even close to “perfect” S2 rights many of the wrongs of the off-on-the-wrong-foot first season. One of these is that of Danny Rand, the titular Iron Fist, isn’t nearly the childish and naïve character he was previously. He was the worst part of S1. Having undergone some personal growth (more due to what happened in The Defenders than in the first season) Danny has taken his Fist to the streets to combat street level violence and evil and to be the protector of his piece of New York. He’s grittier, meaner, and more explosive. He hits his conclusions far quicker and takes charge more often and, most importantly, has gotten into a good relationship with Colleen Wing. Actress Jessica Henwick’s portrayal of Wing was one of the best things about the first season and she adds a good balance and dynamic to the relationship with Danny. She is integral to this season in many ways (won’t spoil them all here) but something that was really enjoyable and fun and a throwback call to the comics was her relationship with Misty Knight (they formed the detective agency in the comics); while we don’t get that in this season we get hints that it could happen and the easy chemistry that Henwick and actress Simone Missick put up on screen as pals and mutual admirers is the best on the show. Those two kicked some serious butt in this season too. And that’s another thing that made this season so much better—the actor’s increased ability to sell their very physical fight scenes are way better as is the choreography this time around. Danny’s main nemesis is both himself and how the Iron Fist is “infecting” him and his former K’un Lun brother Davos who manages to steal the Iron Fist from Danny and then shows him what it’s really like to take it to the streets. Ward returns along with Joy, Danny’s two erstwhile siblings/ business partners, and Joy has it out for Danny this season. Ward is given big sympathy bumps as someone who is struggling to overcome his addictions and make right some of the damage he had done to his relationships. Once again he is the most interesting character in the series followed closely this time by Joy and Wing and Davos vying for the third spot. But while IFS2 gets a lot right it still suffers in a few ways and that is still having its titular star being the worst part of the series. So frustrating! Also the characters are actually more one-dimensional this time around, even the newly introduced Mary Walker who adds some mystery and intrigue to the series. (I think that she may have been created to play off of a comic villain called Typhoid Mary but the comparisons aren’t close enough for me to say for certain.) Too much is done with Walker while in the end she simply doesn’t mean enough for the season. There are some nice callbacks to the comic series with Rand and Davos wearing the original Iron Fist mask; comic fans are sure to appreciate this. And they may appreciate Davos stealing the fist but having the fist be transferrable denigrates Rand’s character; however it also makes for a lot more storytelling options. I just wish that they would have made Danny Rand somebody that you could care about and root for. 3.75 stars.
