Iron Bull is the battle-hardened Ben-Hassrath Qunari spy. He is also a fan-favorite companion to romance, so here's how to win over the Bull.
You and your party have a major task ahead of you. There are hoards of monsters, laundry lists of quests, and massive regions to explore in Dragon Age: Inquisition . None of it will be easy and danger is around every corner, but your companions can be more than just powerful allies on the battlefield. They can become close confidants and even lovers.
Iron Bull , specifically, might seem like he's only good for a tough fight if you take him at face value. But there's a lot more to this Qunari if you dive into his romance quests. Here's a full rundown on how to romance this spicy, but kind-hearted giant.
Iron Bull is the only companion and only other character in the game besides Josephine who can be romanced by a character of any race or gender. He's completely open-minded -- making him a great choice for a relationship no matter how you're role-playing your Inquisitor.
You meet Iron Bull after being sent to the Storm Coast to meet a group called the Chargers. Go there and talk with Iron Bull and invite him to join your group. Once he joins, keep him in your party to increase his approval rank. He's hard to piss off, so don't worry too hard about your choices in quests.
However, there are a few points to watch out for related to the Templars or rebel mages . In these instances, you should do the good thing and allow them to remain independent.
Bull is also fond of killing Tevinter soldiers, Venatori cult members, and, most of, all High Dragons. He loves a good Dragon fight as he explains in the game at one point. Otherwise, always just choose the romantic or flirty options when speaking to him until you unlock the "Demands of the Qun" quest. Complete it right away and take Iron Bull with you (of course).
Continue building approval up until you reach Skyhold and he will eventually show up in your room. Just go along with his conversation, obviously not rejecting him, and you will start your romance with the big lug.
To make your relationship serious, the first step is to simply ask him. He will tell you about a tradition his people have and start a new quest called "Tough Love." You will need to take down a dragon for this quest, so make sure you're prepared for that kind of fight. The easiest dragon to take down is Fereldan Frostback in the Hinterlands. It is just level 12, so as long as you are at least level 15, you shouldn't have much trouble taking it down.
After that, just grab some obsidian from any source, take the dragon tooth, and craft the necklace at the requisition table. All that's left is to take the gift to Iron Bull and watch the fireworks. He will accept the gift and begin calling you "Kadan" which roughly translates to "my heart" in Qunlat.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is full of betrayals, but none of them are as brutal as Iron Bull's conditional betrayal in the Trespasser DLC.
Dragon Age: Inquisition 's DLC epilogue, Trespasser , had a lot of significant moments including Solas' dread wolf reveal and the conclusion for the various companions that range from getting married to becoming a viscount. However, for some players there was betrayal, notably a betrayal from The Iron Bull if they chose to sacrifice his mercenary group during his companion quest. Many fans who got this ending felt bitter or devastated, especially when they expected the qunari to be friends with the Inquisition after sacrificing Bull's chargers. Some may have even been romancing the character, but that made little-to-no difference in his betrayal.
The obvious emotional reaction from fans aside, Iron Bull's betrayal in Trespasser is worth examining. Betrayal is a major theme in Dragon Age: Inquisition , but no one pulls it off as cold and calculating as Iron Bull. Compared to even the dread wolf himself, Iron Bull's behavior up until the Trespasser betrayal is perfect for a spy. For fans who got to see this dark side of Bull, it proves how the qunari's Ben-Hassrath spies are the best of the best.
Going into Inquisition , veteran fans of Dragon Age already knew a lot about the qunari through Sten in Origins and the qunari invasion attempt at Kirkwall. However, Iron Bull is unlike those encounters, as he comes off as too honest or even lazy as a spy. He immediately tells the Inquisitor that he is Ben-Hassrath when they meet, and seemingly blows his cover. However, all of this is calculated to lure the Inquisition and its leader into a false sense of control.
There are two conditions that make the Iron Bull betray the player in Trespasser . One is that the Chargers were sacrificed for a secure relationship with the qunari . The second one is if Bull's personal quest is never completed. This means it is possible for the Chargers to be alive while Iron Bull betrays the Inquisition, so it was his original plan all along, and the only condition that changes his mind is witnessing his people sacrifice his friends while the Inquisition doesn't.
All of this means Iron Bull acted as a spy from the beginning, and only stops if the Chargers are not sacrificed during his personal quest. Showing a laid-back personality is not exactly a lie, but it is a perfect part to show off that lures others into a false sense of security. If he does decide to betray the Inquisitor, he keeps up his lying with no regrets, unlike Solas and Blackwall who go through inner turmoil. If Cole is in the party during Bull's betrayal in Trespasser , he even mentions that Iron Bull's heart had no doubts over his choice.
Unlike Solas and Blackwall, Iron Bull leaves little that hints at his betrayal in Trespasser . He is a professional, and the qun has methods to remove any doubt from its community. They are a society all about re-education, and Iron Bull has even admitted to the Inquisitor that he willingly put himself through re-education to continue with his work without any hesitation.
Iron Bull is honest about his past, even mentioning he was chosen to be Ben-Hassrath when the tamassrans found out he lied to them. Even his qun name, Hissrad, translates to "liar" and "weaver of illusions." Iron Bull proves to be smarter than most, even keeping up with Solas. Despite not being a mage himself, he points out that Solas' fighting style is different from any other mage (a subtle hint of Solas' true nature ). Spies are often imagined to be like Leliana, using daggers and poisons, but Iron Bull's fighting style uses two-handed weapons and brings players to wonder if that is on purpose.
Compared to other betrayals in the game, Iron Bull's has the least amount of wiggle room for the player. One either kills Iron Bull or dies, with no hope of changing his mind. His approval rating does not matter, and his romance also does not matter. It is a very unforgiving consequence that the players cannot escape unless they reload back hours into the game. To add insult to injury, Inquisitors who romanced Iron Bull get blamed for the qunari attack and are said to be, "Mocked in tavern songs and Orlesian plays for years to come."
Dragon Age players have been betrayed by characters like Morrigan, Anders, Blackwall, and Solas , and can conditionally be betrayed by many others. However, none of these characters had the guts to come out as a spy and then still surprise players by the end. This has made Iron Bull one of the scariest characters in the series, but at least he only shows this dark side to those who are cold enough to kill his Chargers.

Dragon Age: Inquisition includes an awesome group of companions, one of the most popular of which is Iron Bull. Here's what you should know about him.
The Qunari spy is incredibly useful in a fight. Yet, the reason that players like him so much is his personality more than his combat prowess. He's so charming, and his boisterous attitude is a constant source of entertainment throughout the game. Despite only featuring in one title, a lot of information has been revealed about Iron Bull through optional in-game conversations, The World Of Thedas Volume 2, and developer interviews. Here is a collection of the most interesting details.
Despite his size and combat abilities, it's rare to see Iron Bull fighting alone. If he's not battling alongside The Inquisitor, he's usually backed up by his mercenary band, Bull's Chargers.
Bull started the company after growing tired of working for an inexperienced and tactically inept leader in his previous mercenary band. As he left his old group, he offered anyone there a place in the soon-to-be Bull's Chargers. His former leader wasn't too happy about it, but the large Qunari swiftly put an end to the protest by force.
Iron Bull is romanceable by every version of The Inquisitor. But that wasn't always going to be the case. As explained during Bioware's Gaymer panel in 2014 , the size differential between Iron Bull and other races initially created problems. The script even included an explanation as to why Bull couldn't be with certain Inquisitors.
In the end, the Cinematic Designer and the animation team came to the rescue and fixed those issues. Thankfully they did, otherwise many would've missed out on one of the best romances in the game.
Dragon Age: Inquisition doesn't have a black and white morality system. In its place is an approval rating mechanic, where players' decisions affect how they're viewed by their companions.
For Iron Bull, there are a few ways to get his approval rating up. For instance, constricting the mages at Redcliffe Castle, allying with the Grey Wardens, and killing high dragons with him in the party, all make him like The Inquisitor more. Getting his approval rating up is the only way of pursuing a romance with the big Qunari.
During Iron Bull's personal quest, The Inquisitor has to convince the Qunari spy to either sacrifice his Chargers or let his own race down.
This decision has a significant impact on the Trespasser DLC. If Bull keeps the Chargers alive, then he sticks by the Inquisition. But if he sacrifices his team, then he also betrays The Inquisitor and helps his fellow Ben-Hassrath. His treachery forces players to kill their former companion.
In the scenario where Iron Bull chooses his Chargers over the Ben-Hassrath, there's an attempt on his life. Two assassins disguised as members of the Inquisition ambush him at Skyhold, and he takes them both down.
Some players might notice that the sequence looks a little different from most action-orientated moments in the game. This is because there was no motion capture budget for the scene. Cinematic Designer, John Epler, has revealed that they had to piece together the whole thing by using animations from the in-game engine.
Upon meeting Iron Bull on the Storm Coast, players immediately notice that he's sporting an eyepatch. Krem - Bull's second in command - tells the story behind the missing eye in an optional conversation.
He recounts how the incident occurred while the Qunari spy was trying to save him from an attack. During the tussle, Bull put himself in harm's way and lost an eye as a result. Incredibly, he didn't even know Krem at the time; he just saw someone in trouble and lent a hand.
Iron Bull is a huge fearsome fighter, so it's surprising that he is a spy, not a soldier. The in-universe reason for this is explained in The World Of Thedas Volume 2 .
Qunari children are raised by Tamassrans, who help turn them into useful members of society. The one looking after Iron Bull realized that he didn't have the makings of a soldier because of his lack of obedience. So, she recommended that he join the Ben-Hassrath instead.
Qunari names are more akin to titles that describe an individual. Thus, they can go by several names throughout their life.
As a child, Iron Bull was known as Ashkaari, which means "one who thinks." Later in life, he was given the name Hissrad, meaning, "one who creates illusions" because of his adept ability to lie. Finally, once he became a mercenary, he was able to name himself, so he went with The Iron Bull.
One of the most subtle romances in the game is the one between Iron Bull and Dorian. It only occurs if The Inquisitor maintains a strictly platonic relationship with both characters. But even then, it can still be difficult to trigger.
All players can do is have both of them in their party and hope they mention hooking up. If they do, then it's possible (if The Inquisitor is their friend) to ask them about their relationship back at Skyhold. Once together, their romantic entanglement continues into the Trespasser DLC.
As Iron Bull is romanceable by both males and females, many assume that the character is bisexual.
However, the writer of Iron Bull, Patrick Weekes, has clarified that the Qunari spy is actually pansexual. So, he's not only attracted to men and women but people of all different genders. As it's hard to find a pansexual character in any piece of media, it's a nice bit of representation on Bioware's part.

Today, Bull’s Chargers are famous mercenaries, fiercely loyal to the huge Qunari warrior who leads them into battles and taverns with equal enthusiasm. The Iron Bull still sends the Ben-Hassrath reports, but years of living outside Qunari rules have him wondering which identity is really him. Whoever he is, he’s more than happy to join the Inquisition and get paid to kill demons.
