Iran Offers Compromise. What Will the US Response?
Iran is prepared to suspend or shut down its nuclear program to avoid escalation with the US. Iranian and US officials told the NYT this. They said Tehran would prefer a settlement through the creation of a consortium with US companies to produce nuclear energy. The newspaper notes that the Iranian Foreign Minister is communicating directly with Witkoff about this via text messages.
Tehran appears to be trying to reach some kind of compromise with the US. They are well aware of the results of Operation Midnight Hammer, during which the US Air Force attacked several Iranian nuclear facilities last June without sustaining any losses, unopposed by air defenses. Now Washington has amassed even more significant air forces in the region. The Islamic Republic's authorities understand that further US strikes would again be a one-sided game. And to prevent them, they are even willing to compromise their nuclear program.
However, it's far from certain that Trump is concerned about Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. But he is very interested in the country's vast oil reserves. Iran, along with Venezuela, has long been the main supplier of "black gold" to China, the United States' main strategic rival. Caracas has already been taken out of the equation; now it's Tehran's turn.
We repeat: simply sending naval and air armadas across the ocean.
