Massive operating system updates usually come with unexpected problems. With Apple's iOS 10, a number of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users found that upgrading had temporarily bricked their devices. The company addressed the problem, but another, more explicit issue has raised its head.
It seems that the iMessage GIF search feature had been surfacing pornographic results from fairly innocent terms. Deadspin found that when typing in the word "butt," one of the top results was a gif of female My Little Pony character Fluttershy dropping her underwear.
A sexualized cartoon character isn't great, but worse was to follow. A woman contacted The Verge to report that her eight-year-old daughter had been presented with an image showing "a woman giving oral sex to a well-endowed male." The young girl, who was sending a message to her Dad, hadn't been searching for anything explicit, just the word "huge."
"I see the image come up like, holy sh*t, whoa whoa whoa, that's a hardcore porn image," said the girl's mother,Tassie Bethany. "I grabbed the phone from her immediately. She typed in the word 'huge,' which isn't sexual in any nature. It's just a word, not like butt or anything else."
"My daughter uses it because there's cartoons and fart jokes, that kind of stuff. That's hardcore porn. People making out she might see on ABC. That's something that could potentially be pretty traumatizing for a small child," she added.
The inappropriate gifs aren't limited to pornographic images; it turns out that searches for the term "power" were bringing up images of the Power Rangers performing a Nazi salute as they stood in front of a swastika. The words "Heil Hitler" appearing above them.
Apple has since added the terms "butt" and "huge" to its GIF search blacklist. Looking up these words, along with explicit or biological terms, won't show up any results.
Apple has yet to comment on the Bing-powered GIF feature.

A new way to find and insert animated GIFs into messages creates a conduit for off-color graphics.

Apple's new iOS 10 software for iPhones and iPads has a nifty new feature: you can search for and insert animated GIF images directly from the Messages app . It appears to have turned not-so-nifty though as people discovered it can be a conduit for porn, too.
Deadspin flagged a My Little Pony image for adults , not kids, with a search for "butt." Gizmodo found some using porn terms but also more ordinary words like "huge." Both sites found search terms that worked before being shut down, indicating that Apple was trying to mop up the situation.
iOS 10 , released Tuesday, adds a wealth of new abilities to iPhones and iPads, but its debut has been tarnished. In addition to the naughty GIF images, stability problems have hurt iOS 10, and a major partner, T-Mobile, warned iPhone customers not to upgrade yet because of network connection problems.
Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

APPLE has made a boob of its new iOS 10 messaging system -- which allows young users to send images of PORN.
The much lauded update launched on Tuesday giving users the option of turning their written text messages into moving images called GIFs.
Software scans the message and gives a suggested GIF that could be sent along with it.
But shocked iPhone and iPad users have discovered that typing phrases like "hard" or "oh my God" in their texts can conjure up explicit porn images.
Overtly sexual words were already blocked from the software -- but users quickly found that more obscure phrases could result in porn snaps.
Even common words like "huge" have led to hardcore images appearing on users' screens.
A mother told tech website The Verge her young daughter used the tame description in a text -- only for the software to present a GIF showing a woman giving a man oral sex.
"I see the image come up like, 'whoa whoa whoa', that's a hardcore porn image," the unnamed woman said.
"I grabbed the phone from her immediately.
"She typed in the word 'huge,' which isn't sexual in any nature.
"It's just a word, not like 'butt' or anything else."
Tech giant Apple, which today launched its latest iPhone 7 around the world , has begun removing the explicit GIFs from its new operating system.
One iPad owner wrote on Twitter: "Well… my iPad Pro didn’t take to the #ios10 update very well. It’s a brick."
