Chinese company Fourier Intelligence has unveiled its groundbreaking project, the GR-1 general-purpose humanoid robot. With plans to manufacture 100 units by the end of 2023, Fourier aims to create robots capable of carrying nearly their own weight, showcasing a unique focus in the field of robotics.


Fourier Intelligence is renowned for its specialization in rehabilitation technologies, offering the RehabHub platform that integrates a range of physical therapy devices. From wrist strength games to lower-body exoskeletons, these devices address various rehabilitation needs, including hand and finger grip training, balance improvement, and mobility enhancement.


The GR-1 humanoid robot, launched in 2019, may seem unexpected in Fourier's portfolio. However, the development of lower-body exoskeletons for physical therapy likely shares hardware and problem-solving aspects with robots' leg mechanisms.


China faces significant challenges in the future, with an aging population that surpasses the number of working-age individuals. In response to this demographic shift, Fourier envisions a future where robots can assume a substantial portion of the workload. The GR-1 represents an intriguing exploration of a general-purpose robot, similar to ongoing projects by Tesla and Figure, with a particular focus on caregiving and physical therapy assistance.


Notably, the GR-1 features purple grip handles around its hips, reminiscent of devices found in rehabilitation centers. Standing at 165 cm (5 ft 5 in) tall and weighing 55 kg (121 lb), this screen-faced humanoid can achieve a top walking speed of approximately 5 km/h (3 mph). Equipped with electric actuators providing 40 degrees of freedom, the GR-1's joints offer flexibility akin to the leading robots from Tesla and Figure, utilizing electric motors capable of generating up to 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque.


With an impressive carrying capacity of up to 50 kg (110 lb), nearly matching its own weight, the GR-1 is positioned to handle tasks such as transporting immobile patients between beds and wheelchairs. CEO and co-founder Zen Koh envisions a multifunctional system that can provide caregiving, therapy assistance, and companionship for the elderly.


Fourier has been diligently developing and testing partial and full-body prototypes since 2021. In recent video demonstrations, the GR-1 showcases its ability to walk, handle objects delicately, respond to physical inputs, and navigate obstacles. While teaching robots to autonomously navigate and perform unprogrammed tasks remains a challenge, Fourier's strategy involves sending out the initial units to R&D labs, allowing diverse teams to explore different approaches and enhance the robot's capabilities.


As countries grapple with the impending shortage of human caregivers, Fourier's ambitious vision of deploying capable, responsive, and friendly robots could revolutionize elderly care and support for individuals with injuries. However, it remains uncertain when Chinese-built humanoids like the GR-1 will make their way to the United States due to regulatory considerations.
