Interview with Dr. Yonas Gedamu, Consultant Internist, Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist

1. What inspired you to sub-specialize in Gastroenterology and Hepatology?

Dr.Yonas

"My curiosity stemmed from seeing individuals with GI and liver issues such as liver failure. I wondered why renal dialysis was available but not liver dialysis.

The second inspiration occurred during my third year of internal medicine residency, during an attachment to the endoscopic service. I had high hopes for the use of straightforward, noninvasive techniques to manage bleeding instances using upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy.

The third inspiration is that, even now that I'm a gastroenterologist, I remain excited about the future. I consider the more sophisticated procedures like endo-robotics, ESD, and EFTR that induce perforation and then treat it with a clip. I am also enthusiastic about treatment options for liver disease, such as MARS and liver transplantation.

Hearing about dyspeptic symptoms common in the community also motivates me to address these problems."

2. Is the future promising for medical students and residents?

Dr.Yonas

"Absolutely. I have no doubt that you will enjoy learning about the GI subspecialty and developing the skill of using both your hands and brain. You will navigate the world with digital health and AI. A large number of personnel are required to prevent and treat GI problems.

Additionally, you will use research findings and evidence-based practice to address GI and liver issues. We must treat our patients based on the evidence we have and meet the standards in every facet of GI and liver illness diagnosis and therapy."

3. Any advice for undergraduate and postgraduate students?

Dr.Yonas

"My strong recommendation is to explore the world in many directions, choose a specialized unit like the GI field, become a leading expert on a particular subject, and never stop learning until the day you pass away. It is nearly always true that if you plan, you will succeed, no matter how or where you go. Explore, think, plan, commit, and succeed."

4. Any inspirational quote?

Dr.Yonas

"There is nothing difficult under the sun, so you can succeed and even invent new things."
