Interview with Kijo (@Aroid.Hustlers)

1. Hello Kijo! I am happy to have the opportunity to speak with you. To begin, could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background and current work? When did you start breeding Anthuriums, and how did it all begin?

— Hi! I’m Kijo from Bali Exotic Anthurium Collective (@Bali.Exotic.Anthuriums), also known as Aroid Hustlers, and I’m the creator of Boogie. I’m a proud single father of three amazing kids. Professionally, I run a tattoo business and work as an art director for several companies. I’m also the singer of a hardcore band called Strikes. And of course, I’m a passionate plant lover—especially Anthuriums. I started collecting Anthuriums in 2017 and began breeding them around 2019.

2. So, if I understand correctly, are you the one who created the well-known Balinese hybrid Boogie?

— Yes, I’m the Boogie creator.

3. When was the first Boogie release? How long did the seeds take to mature? Which plants were crossed to make original Boogie (OG)?

— Boogie was officially released on July 1st, 2022. It took approximately two years from seed to reach maturity. The original parents of Boogie are:

4. Why did you choose these particular plants as the mother specimens? And what inspired you to name your hybrid Boogie?

— I chose those parent plants because both have very unique characteristics. As for the name “Boogie,” it felt simple and natural. The ruffled and wavy leaf edges reminded me of someone dancing the boogie, it has movement and rhythm.

5. So, does that mean you have the original Muchlis in your collection? Do you have any information about its origin? Which plants were crossed to create this plant or is it a kind of mutation?

— Yes, I have the original crystallinum “Muchlis” in my collection. From my perspective, “Muchlis” is likely a mutation or possibly a complex hybrid.

6. Kijo, what characteristics did you focus on when selecting specimens of Boogie OG? Did you have to reject many specimens - and what did you do with those that didn’t meet your expectations?

— When selecting Boogie OG specimens, I focused on three main characteristics: strong ruffles, flat sinus, defined tail. These traits were evaluated when the seedlings were around 6 months after germinating. For those that didn’t meet the Boogie standard, I named them Anthurium “Tut Sampi.” At that time, someone I knew needed financial support for surgery, so I sold those plants and donated the proceeds to help him.

7. How many specimens were there in the final selection? Did they all survive? And how many varieties of Boogie OG plants exist now?

— From the first harvest in December 2021, approximately 250 seeds germinated. Out of those, only 25 specimens met the Boogie standards. Today, only 9 specimens have survived: 02-Glare, 04, 06, 08, 09, 11, 17, 22, and 24 now located in the USA.

8. Kijo, could you please explain to our readers what Boogie Glare is? What are its main characteristics?

— Boogie Glare shares the core Boogie characteristics, ruffles, flat sinus, and tails but with stronger crystallinum glittering veins, giving it a more striking visual shine.

9. Which of all Boogie OG is considered the most standard and unique? What’s your favourite one?

— It’s impossible for me to choose just one. I love all of them equally, they each carry part of the journey.

10. Did any other collectors assist you with the selection? And which Boogie OG numbers do they have?

— During the early stages, Bayu (@sutra.garden) and Aven (@potisheadbali) assisted me in growing and selecting the OG Boogies. They owned some pre-numbered specimens, but unfortunately, none of those survived.

11. Kijo, do you have all the numbered Boogie OGs in your own collection?

— All surviving OG Boogies will eventually return to my collection. As of now, Boogie 08 and 11 are confirmed to have no clones yet, while others clones are on their way.

12. Some people claim that plants from the original Boogie self-pollinating can’t be called Boogie, since Boogie is a unique, one-of-a-kind plant. Could you please tell us what is actually correct?

— The original plants are called OG Boogie and always carry their specific number. For self-pollinated OG Boogies, they can still be called Boogie, but should be labeled properly as: Boogie F1, Boogie OG [number] F1 or Boogie OG [number]x[same number]

13. Kijo, how can I safely purchase a clone of Boogie OG or trace the history of my Boogie x self(F1)? Am I correct that when your and your official partners sell Boogie OG, you provide a tag with the Boogie OG number and your signature, which gives a clear record of the clone’s or x self’s lineage?

— Nowadays, you can contact Bali Exotic Anthurium Collective (@Bali.Exotic.Anthuriums) directly to purchase a clone of Boogie OG or other Boogie series. We provide complete and legitimate documentation along with all necessary lineage information. When Boogie OG was first released on July 1st, 2022, each plant came with an official plant card, personally handwritten and numbered by me. For Boogie crosses produced by the Wizards of Bali Exotic Anthuriums Collective, each plant is accompanied by an official tag and clear documentation of its parentage, ensuring full transparency and traceability.

14. Kijo, have you already produced Boogie F2, F3, or back-cross generations? If so, were you satisfied with the results?

— We are currently working on developing the F2 generation, carefully selecting the best forms derived from the original OG F1 Boogies. Our focus is on refining and stabilizing the most outstanding characteristics to elevate the next generation to an even higher standard.

15. How frequently do you observe Boogie mutations among the progeny of x self crosses? Do you have any statistical data or observations regarding its stability or heritability?

— All Boogie x self mutations we have observed so far are stable. Based on our experience, each batch of selfed hybrid progeny tends to produce occasional surprise mutations; however, the occurrence rate is typically around 5% or less than 10%.

16. I have two Boogie 08 F1 mutations in my collection. How valuable do you think these specimens are? Could the clones from the plants like this be expensive? Can these particular plants be used in hybridization? If so, what pair would you choose for them?

— Having Boogie OG 08 x self mutation specimens is definitely interesting. They’re unique, grows well and look stable. Clones can certainly hold good value. Yes, as these are Boogie OG 08 x self, pairing them or selfing it would be the good option as it will produce the F2. The goal would generally be to complement and strengthen desirable traits while maintaining balance and plant health. Thoughtful breeding is always about refinement and long-term stability.

17. Kijo, сould you please tell us which characteristics primarily determine the pricing of Boogie and Boogie hybrid plants? Which traits are most highly valued in x-selfs and hybrids? In your opinion, what constitutes an ideal Boogie specimen, and which characteristics should it necessarily possess?

— Value is shaped by perception and quality. Most plant enthusiasts appreciate specimens with strong form, balanced proportions, good structure, consistency as they grow, and clear lineage. For x-selfs and hybrids, traits such as stability, uniqueness, and improvement in form compared to previous generations tend to be appreciated. In my opinion, an ideal BoogieX specimen is one that has a strong identity and stable characteristics over time. Beyond specific traits, it should simply feel harmonious, well developed, and true to its lineage.

19. Kijo, do you or your colleagues have any plans to make a variegated version of Boogie in the future? And can we look forward to some new souvenirs from Bali in the near future? If yes, can you give us a small hint about what to expect?

— Yes, we are currently working on Variegated Boogie. They are still in progress as we grow them to reach their best form. A small hint? They will be colorful.

20. By the way, how was your first exhibition in Bangkok? After the December exhibition, a photograph featuring American buyers and Boogie spread all over the internet. Did the plant become the star of the exhibition? It seems that now the plant will be in a new part of the world… it’s very cool! Will you continue to participate in exhibitions in Bangkok? And what other exhibitions do you usually visit?

— The 1st exhibition in Bangkok was a very positive and memorable experience. It was encouraging to see interest from collectors from different parts of the world. The response was warm, and it was exciting to see the plant appreciated globally, at that event all plants showed from all participants was stunning. Yes, I planned to visit the next event in Bangkok, and we are open to participating in exhibitions when the opportunity feels right. We also planned to participate in Beijing in the upcoming months.

21. And final question, Kijo, could you please clarify what the phrase “Boogie Worldwide” means? Is it your personal philosophy regarding the cultivation and distribution of Boogie?

— “Boogie Worldwide” is simple. It reflects our vision at Bali Exotic Anthuriums, to see Anthurium Boogie spread and grow all around the world.

— Привет! Я Kijo из Bali Exotic Anthurium Collective (@Bali.Exotic.Anthuriums), также известный, как Aroid Hustlers. Я гордый отец-одиночка троих замечательных детей. 2. Правильно ли я понимаю, что именно Вы создали известный балийский гибрид Boogie?

— Да, я создатель Boogie.

3. Расскажите пожалуйста, когда состоялся первый релиз Boogie? Сколько времени созревали семена? Какие растения были скрещены для создания оригинального Boogie (OG)?

— Boogie был официально представлен 1 июля 2022 года. От семени до зрелого растения прошло примерно два года. Родительские растения оригинального Boogie:

4. Почему Вы выбрали именно эти растения в качестве материнских? И что вдохновило Вас назвать гибрид Boogie?

— Я выбрал эти родительские растения, потому что оба обладают очень уникальными характеристиками. Что касается названия «Boogie», оно показалось мне простым и естественным. Гофрированные и волнистые края листьев напомнили мне человека, танцующего буги — в них есть движение и ритм.

5. Значит ли это, что оригинальный Muchlis есть в Вашей коллекции? Есть ли у Вас информация о происхождении Muchlis? Это результат скрещивания или мутация?

— Да, оригинальный Сrystallinum “Muchlis” есть в моей коллекции. На мой взгляд, “Muchlis” — это, скорее всего, мутация или, возможно, сложный гибрид.

6. Kijo, на какие характеристики вы обращали внимание при отборе Boogie OG? Много ли растений вам пришлось отбраковать и что вы сделали с теми, которые не соответствовали ожиданиям?

— При отборе Boogie OG я сосредоточился на трёх основных характеристиках: выраженные гофры, плоский синус, чётко сформированный «хвост». Эти признаки оценивались примерно через 6 месяцев после прорастания. Те растения, которые не соответствовали стандарту Boogie, я назвал Anthurium “Tut Sampi”. В то время одному моему знакомому требовалась финансовая помощь для операции, поэтому я продал эти растения и передал вырученные средства ему.

7. Сколько экземпляров вошло в финальный отбор? Все ли они выжили? И сколько разновидностей Boogie OG существует на данный момент?

— Из первого сбора в декабре 2021 года проросло примерно 250 семян. Из них только 25 экземпляров соответствовали стандартам Boogie. На сегодняшний день сохранилось лишь 9 экземпляров: 02-Glare, 04, 06, 08, 09, 11, 17, 22 и 24, последний сейчас находятся в США.

8. Kijo, объясните пожалуйста нашим читателям, что такое Boogie Glare? В чём его основные особенности?

— Boogie Glare сохраняет основные характеристики Boogie: гофры, плоский синус и «хвост», но отличается более выраженными, сверкающими жилками Сrystallinum, что придаёт ему более яркий визуальный блеск.

9. Какой из Boogie OG считается самым эталонным и уникальным? Есть ли у Вас любимый?

— Невозможно выбрать только один. Я люблю их все одинаково, каждый из них часть моего пути.

10. Помогали ли Вам другие коллекционеры в отборе? И какие номера Boogie OG были у них?

— На ранних этапах Bayu (@sutra.garden) и Aven (@potisheadbali) помогали мне выращивать и отбирать Boogie OG. У них были некоторые экземпляры до присвоения номеров, но, к сожалению, ни один из них не сохранился.

11. Все ли пронумерованные экземпляры Boogie OG на данный момент находятся в Вашей коллекции?

— Все сохранившиеся Boogie OG со временем вернутся в мою коллекцию. На данный момент у Boogie 08 и 11 ещё нет клонов, в то время как клоны остальных уже находятся в процессе размножения.

12. Некоторые люди утверждают, что растения, полученные от самоопыления Boogie OG, нельзя называть Boogie, поскольку Boogie — это уникальное растение. Что Вы думаете по этому поводу?

— Оригинальные растения называются Boogie OG и всегда имеют свой конкретный номер. Самоопылённые Boogie OG также могут называться Boogie, но должны быть правильно обозначены как: Boogie F1, Boogie OG [номер] F1 или Boogie OG [номер] × [тот же номер].

16. В моей коллекции есть две мутации Boogie 08 F1. Насколько ценными могут быть такие экземпляры? Могут ли их клоны быть дорогими? Можно ли использовать эти растения в гибридизации? Если да, какую пару Вы бы выбрали?

— Наличие мутаций Boogie OG 08 × self — это действительно интересно. Они уникальны, хорошо растут и выглядят стабильными. Их клоны могут иметь хорошую ценность. Да, поскольку это Boogie OG 08 × self, хорошим вариантом будет их скрестить между собой или провести повторное самоопыление для получения F2. Ценность формируется качеством. Любители Boogie ценят сильную форму, сбалансированные пропорции, хорошую структуру, стабильность в росте и чёткую родословную. Для x-self и гибридов важны стабильность, уникальность и улучшение формы по сравнению с предыдущими поколениями. Идеальный BoogieX, на мой взгляд, должен иметь яркую индивидуальность и стабильные характеристики со временем. Он должен быть гармоничным, хорошо развитым и соответствовать своей родословной.

18. Планируете ли вы создать вариегатную версию Boogie? И можем ли мы ожидать новых «сувениров» с Бали в ближайшем будущем?

— Да, сейчас мы работаем над Boogie Variegated. Они всё ещё находятся в процессе выращивания, чтобы достичь наилучшей формы. Маленькая подсказка? Они будут красочными!

19. Как прошла ваша первая выставка в Бангкоке? После декабрьской выставки фото с американскими покупателями и Boogie разлетелось по всему интернету. Кажется Boogie стали звездами прошедшей выставки. Планируете ли вы и дальше участвовать в выставках в Бангкоке или где-то ещё?

— Первая выставка в Бангкоке стала очень позитивным и запоминающимся опытом. Было вдохновляюще видеть интерес коллекционеров из разных уголков мира. Реакция была тёплой, и было приятно видеть, как растение получают признание на международном уровне — при этом все представленные участниками растения были потрясающими. Да, я планирую посетить следующее мероприятие в Бангкоке и открыт к участию в выставках, когда это уместно. Также мы планируем участие в Пекине в ближайшие месяцы.

20. И последний вопрос: что означает фраза «Boogie Worldwide»? Это ваша личная философия в отношении выращивания и распространения Boogie?

— «Boogie Worldwide» — всё просто. Это отражение нашего видения в Bali Exotic Anthuriums — увидеть, как Anthurium Boogie распространяется и растёт по всему миру.
