International Latin
International Latin is one of two categories in the International Style. It is composed of five dances that are competed in the order of cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, and jive. Unlike American Style, Latin is internationally accepted as one of the biggest dance styles. In addition, it is the second oldest style of partner dancing, next to Standard.
While some of the dances are often mistaken as the same as the ones found in Rhythm or Nightclub, the styles are entirely different. Each dance in Latin has its own unique figures and syllabi. Unlike American Style, each dance also features its own technique and history.
Another common misunderstanding is that Latin refers to many Nightclub dances such as salsa or merengue because they have Latino roots. Many dancers will advertise these as "Latin," simply because it is such a common misunderstanding. However, in ballroom circles, Latin specifically refers to the five dances of international cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, and jive.

The Latin dances are more overtly sensual, with fashionable, dressy costumes for women and tight-fitting, classy ones for men. More variation in movement is allowed than in the Standard dances. Close, semi-open and open figures are danced. Choreography is extremely important. Hip action is common as well as athletic and balletic maneuvers. The Samba and Paso Doble are the two Latin dances that are progressive, but there is no obligation to move in any pre-set manner round the floor.
