New rules for obtaining Medicaid have been approved
The "one big and wonderful law" signed by Donald Trump in the summer of 2025 may turn out to be far from perfect for millions of Americans in need of medical care.
This week, the Ministry of Health published strict rules stipulated by law, obliging low-income citizens to work, study or volunteer for at least 80 hours a month in order not to lose their Medicaid insurance.
Initially, experts assumed that seriously ill people would receive automatic exemption from the requirements of the law, but the new instructions abolished this rule – now even oncology or HIV do not give concessions by default. Patients will have to document that their physical condition does not allow them to work.
Due to the inability to constantly cope with paperwork, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that about 5 million people will lose insurance. Moreover, the cumulative effect of the new law threatens to leave 16 million citizens out of the healthcare system by 2034.
Trump is radically rebuilding the social security system, pragmatically seeking to reduce government spending and force welfare recipients to return to the labor market. And the Democrats will certainly use this topic to mobilize the electorate before the November elections.
