A woman claims she was groomed and manipulated from age 16 by her former psychologist, with whom she eventually had an inappropriate social relationship for almost eight years.
The woman and the psychologist, now 42, had daily phone conversations for two years and the woman's mother found the psychologist's clothes in her daughter's wardrobe.
The psychologist denied the woman's allegations when the case was recently before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but was found guilty of serious unprofessional conduct and is awaiting a further hearing, where sanctions will be determined.
Neither the woman nor the psychologist can be named for legal reasons.
The woman first saw the psychologist in 2002, having previously seen her school counsellor about eating disorders and depression.
The second time the young woman visited the psychologist, she went with her parents. The patient's mother claims that at that meeting, she was given "offensive" anti-homophobia literature and told by the psychologist of age-appropriate gay venues her daughter could visit.
The professional relationship ended after that session. The patient's father said they would be returning for further work and the mother grew concerned that the psychologist was having an unhealthy and dominating influence on her daughter.
Between 2002 and 2004, the tribunal heard the pair met repeatedly. The psychologist regularly spoke to the woman about being gay and gay sex, held hands with her and "regularly grabbed her backside in a sexual manner".
The woman and the psychologist also had contact through a social club of which they were both members.
In 2009, the woman told a counsellor that the grooming started in 2002.
"My parents had great concern and ceased my therapy with her," she said. "She continued to contact me and we chatted and hid our 'friendship' ... She became better at coercing me to do things and go places and, in the end, shaped me into the person she wanted me to be."
The psychologist contended in evidence that she was empathetic to the woman – which she did not believe to mean counselling – and understanding of her difficulties in being a gay teenager.
She also wrote the woman a reference to support applications for university and employment.
The woman was "infatuated" with the psychologist, her best friend said: she was the person she spoke about most, she house-sat for the psychologist and had keys to her holiday house.
The tribunal heard that the woman hid the relationship and declined to report the relationship to the Psychologists Board, even to the point of masking her identity when she had further counselling.
The relationship was kept secret from the woman's parents after the woman's mother said she did not want them having contact.
The woman said the psychologist showered her with gifts, plied her with alcohol and took her to the Gay Pride March under the pretence of being at the beach. The tribunal could not establish that a sexual relationship existed or that the woman had been taken to gay bars while underage.
But the psychologist was found guilty of serious professional misconduct by the tribunal.
In addition to describing the psychologist as an "evasive" and "argumentative" witness who denied wrongdoing, her actions were a severe breach of trust of a "vulnerable" and "besotted" young woman, the tribunal ruled.
It deemed the length of the professional relationship - two sessions – as irrelevant to their finding because there was no minimum time requirement for professional responsibilities to be activated.
The case returns to the tribunal at a date to be fixed.
