If there is one thing Bollywood movies are credited for, it’s the way they keep on distorting what truly constitutes pleasure. Foreplay is quite literally out of the window, and consent is sketchy at best.
While local streaming platforms seem to be in a constant race to give their viewers unfiltered access to the steamiest erotica there is, Bollywood movies need to be subtle about their sex scenes. The many guidelines by the Censor board prohibit nearly everything that verges on the “vulgar” — from frontal nudity to bare breasts.
Beginning from the Emraan Hashmi brand of erotica and intrigue to modern day Bollywood movies that seek to push the sanitised limits of gender and desire; we’ve come a long way indeed. And as with any progress, we have gone horribly wrong too along the way too.
Here’s the definitive accounting of Bollywood’s part-hilarious, part-artsy relationship with sex.
A not-so-unique spin on the old teacher-student sexual trope, this Bollywood movie famously marked the debut of model Poonam Pandey. The first part of the film is about the student in question fantasising getting a lap dance by his teacher, while a particularly ridiculous scene in the second half shows the teacher begrudgingly “give in” to his advances, only this time it’s real. The director hopes to salvage the sheer ridiculousness of the scene with flowy white curtains, whiter robes and open windows — but nothing helps.
It seems like the early 2010s were the time when the fetishisation of middle-aged women was at its peak in Bollywood movies (and elsewhere). The story of a rather innocuous boy who is helplessly seduced by his neighbour “aunty” in their super depressing Railway colony. The scene in question is a montage of them having sex — tables, chairs, the bed — over a disconcerting violin score and chess games. What’s more, she asks him to brush and shower again before they get into action. Some hygiene.
Remember those news articles that claimed the Himesh Reshammiya song “Jhalak Dikhlaja” was summoning spirits in Indian villages? Well, the film was more than that. Karan Johar’s final segment in this rather bold entry among Bollywood movies felt like a wasted opportunity to show how the road for female satisfaction is often replete with societal roadblocks. Vicky Kaushal’s character can’t last beyond five “strokes”, which Kiara Advani ’s character always counts. Unfortunately, all those scenes end up caricaturing just how annoying it is when you’re with a selfish partner.
A movie quite literally about a self-confessed sex addict. And we know that you know what scene we’re going to talk about: the kitchen affair. Expelled from his hostel after the warden catches the character played by Gulshan Devaiah making out, he rents out a small flat in an unassuming middle-class locality. If it couldn’t get any more adventurous, he sets his sight on a lonely homemaker in the neighborhood. He seems to ravage her in the kitchen, while a steaming pot of tea rages on the burner and cobwebbed kitchen windows witness this sorry excuse of a sex scene.
Among 2021’s most watched Bollywood movies, Haseen Dilruba sees Tapsee Pannu in yet another entanglement involving two men, after Manmarziyaan . Vikrant Massey’s character is awkward, clumsy even while making out, and characteristic of the small town guy who is not really that ambitious. However, the affairs of Pannu’s characters with that of Harshvardhan Rane’s is what forms the crux of the story, particularly the times when they are shown aggressively making out in the backdrop of a city that will not accept them. And those scenes effectively manage to convey the sheer desire towards happiness that Pannu’s character is unwilling to compromise on.
Often considered an underrated and unacknowledged film in the pantheon of Naughties’ Bollywood movies, the ending still has the potential to break your heart and then some more. But it’s the passionate lovemaking scene between the love-you-to-death lovers played by Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori that made the headlines. Rare and refreshing for a Bollywood film, Mori’s character is also seen taking charge, while a soulful Spanish score plays in the background.
This dark comedy film was an instant hit, people couldn’t believe that the censors had decided to not censor the “Bhag DK Bose” song. However, the film is iconic for its rare depiction of sex in Bollywood (for that time): a woman getting pleasured. Imran Khan’s character is shown passionately going at it with the character of Shenaz Treasury.
A film on women, starring women and helmed by a woman filmmaker. Writer-director Alankrita Shrivastava held nothing back in portraying the many nuances of female desire: the angry side to it, the desperation, the love and everything in between. That Ahana Kumra and Vikrant Massey ’s characters do it in the middle of her wedding to someone else – and that she chooses to record it on her phone – manages to convey how sometimes the boundaries between desire and anger are blurred.
A rarity among Bollywood movies, this one dared to go into the heart of the problem of desire and unmet needs in rural women. Radhika Apte’s character is married to an abusive man, but she truly feels liberated when she dares to have sex with a guru who promises her a child. However, it’s not the promise of a child that sets her free but the act of rebellion in wanting to visit him.
Another gem from the director of Lipstick.. this film also analyses the intersection between faith and desire in these times. When Konkona Sen Sharma’s married character falls for the delivery man played by Amol Parashar, you’re rooting for them throughout the movie. And their moments together, away from the judgemental glare of her husband and society, convey just how freeing intimacy can be for many.
In this surprise black comedy hit – and one of the greatest Bollywood movies of all time, which also got Ayushmann Khurrana his first National Award for acting – we see Radhika Apte’s characters wanting to blindfold herself before they start making out. Why? Simply because she wants to be on the same frequency as the blind character played by Khurrana is. What follows is one of the most heartfelt depictions of intimacy in recent times: slow, measured, tracing fingers down each other’s body, and feeling things they perhaps otherwise wouldn’t.
