3 years later came my sister, and another 3 years and we got youngest brother, whom I was pretty much baby sitting all the time. It was like I did not have much child hood with parents at all.
The Indian system of just cousins being called cousin brother or cousin sister appeals to me more in that way. Anybody else come across this or have a preference? I know most people might not even care one way or another but for some reason my cousin is pretty adamant about it or for whatever reason doesn't like the Indian system.
The "brother" or "sister" could be a neighbor, acquaintance, or even a stranger. It is considered inappropriate to use the person's first name without being invited to do so.
Among North Indian Hindus the marriage between brother and sister is not allowed for seven generations from father side and three generations from mother's side, but among South Indian Hindus particularly among Brahmins cross-cousin marriage is prevalent (i.e. a boy can marry the daughter of his maternal uncle). What is the reason behind this? Does any Hindu scripture illuminate on this issue ?
The hyphenated terms are probably peculiarly Indian. Strictly speaking, in English, someone can be either our cousin or our sibling - not both. I wonder what people from a different English-speaking culture make of "cousin-sister" and "cousin-brother". I've never asked.
