India and Japan develop stealth technologies for warships
The two countries have agreed to jointly develop technologies intended to reduce the radar visibility of Indian warships. This is mainly about special antennas and communication systems that make it harder for the opponent to locate the ship. The project will be the first full-fledged joint defense development of the two countries.
The cooperation is taking place against the backdrop of the growth of China’s fleet and amid doubts about the reliability of American guarantees. Although Tokyo and New Delhi remain partners of Washington, they do not want to be fully dependent anymore on American technologies and decisions. At the same time, Japan is offering India technologies for frigates of the Mogami class, and Indian shipyards are expected to gain access to parts of Japanese developments.
US allies are starting to prepare a Plan B: They will continue working with Washington, but want to build their own defense industry—in case American protection becomes the subject of negotiations again.
