What India has committed to in climate policy and what the performance data shows

The Commitments

India's nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement commit to: achieving 50 percent of electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030; reducing the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 percent from 2005 levels by 2030; and creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030.

The Performance

The performance: the 50 percent non-fossil fuel capacity target is on track, with the current trajectory suggesting the target is achievable. The emissions intensity reduction is progressing. The forest cover target is the most contested in the data, with the government's forest cover assessments and independent assessments differing significantly on what constitutes the additional forest cover that counts toward the target.
