INCESTUAL sexual child abuse is allegedly rampant among some Amish communities throughout the U.S. — and a bombshell new report details claims that family and local leaders have hid the abuse.
Reporter Sarah McClure says she identified 52 “official cases of Amish child sexual assault in seven states over the past two decades.”
The report, published in Cosmopolitan yesterday, reveals the findings of a year-long investigation which McClure believes “doesn’t begin to capture the full picture” of the number of victims, as they’re encouraged not to speak out about their abuse.
McClure tells several stories of women who say they were raped repeatedly as children living in Amish communities.
One of the women, referred to as Sadie, claims she was raped by one older brother by age nine, and had been abused by her chiropractor father by age 12.
Within the next two years, she said three more of her brothers raped her multiple times a week. She said they raped some of her sisters, too.
Another woman, referred to as Esther, told Cosmopolitan she was abused by her brother and a neighborhood boy when she was nine years old.
Lizzie Hershberger says she was 14 years old when she began working for an Amish man and his wife.
Court records, per Cosmo, say Lizzie was raped 25 times over a period of five months. At two points, men walked in on them, but neither helped the girl.
Ultimately, after she reported the rape to police, the man was sentenced to 45 days in jail and 10 years of probation.
But the woman all say they were dissuaded from speaking up about what happened to them
“We’re told that it’s not Christlike to report,” Esther said. “It’s so ingrained. There are so many people who go to church and just endure.”
Abusers within Amish communities don’t often face justice in the criminal justice system, and have tried to avoid working with outside authorities.
Some Amish communities, per the report, appear to internally discipline those who have committed crimes by “shunning” them for six weeks.
During that time, the abusers are ostracized from the community and aren’t allow to eat at the same table as church members.
Afterwards, the person confesses in church and the Amish community is pushed to forgive the abuser — and forget the “sins” that happened.
For Sadie, she remembered police and social workers appearing at her house.
Her father, a chiropractor who she said penetrated her with his fingers to “flip her uterus” for fertility purposes, told cops “things which we were speaking about had been brought up and dealt with in the church.”
Sadie remembers being told by relatives: “You say nothing.”
Her father is said to be confessed to having “sex with two of” his daughters after cops returned, asking “specific questions about having sexual intercourse with his daughters.”
Her now-deceased father told cops “he made love to them at least three times each but didn’t hurt them.”
Sadie’s mother, she recalled to Cosmo, told social workers “to do whatever they could” to keep her dad from going to jail.
Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of first-degree sexual abuse and not incest because, as one lawyer put it in court, “the family is not desiring that he be incarcerated.”
Her dad was sentenced to probation — and Sadie claims she was abused for the next five years.
Esther says she was threatened with ex-communication from the Amish when she reported another woman was being assaulted.
She said she was forced into “counseling” in which she was forced to take “sleep medication” which her medical records state was actually an antipsychotic medication that treats mental illnesses.
“When a victim speaks out, they get sent to a facility and drugged so that they shut up,” Esther said.
McClure says she spoke to dozens of Amish people, law enforcement, judges, attorneys and social workers during her reporting for Type Investigations.
She said she learned sexual abuse in Amish communities “is an open secret spanning generations,” and said victims told her they were anally raped, fondled, groped and forced into oral sex, among other things.
Amos Stoltzfoos, a member of Lancaster County’s Amish fellowship, told McClure “a lot of things have changed and forced us to comply and not allow things to be swept under the rug, like they had at one point.”
He said Lancaster Amish, located in Pennsylvania, “aren’t interested in hiding things” and realized the need to change education for parents and children.
Amish communities are spread throughout the U.S. and local congregations often include 20 to 40 large families.
In Lancaster County, the population reached 33,143 in 2018, which grew 3.2 percent from 2017.
