The romance that has long been teased in “ House of the Dragon ” is finally official.
The seventh episode of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel starts with a funeral and ends with the wedding of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her uncle Daemon. The pair have danced around each other since before they each wed a Velaryon, so it’s almost poetic that their relationship is consummated in Driftmark (the seat of House Velaryon ).
Audiences will have to wait to see how King Viserys will react to learning his daughter and brother are married. But considering Episode 7 reveals that two of Viserys’ other children — Aegon and Helaena — are betrothed to each other, any objections wouldn’t be because the newlyweds are niece and uncle.
Whether you’re new to Westeros or making a long-awaited return, here’s everything you need know about the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel, updated weekly.
“Game of Thrones” fans know that the Targaryens have a long tradition of marrying within the family. Aegon the Conqueror, the first king to sit on the Iron Throne and rule over the Seven Kingdoms, was married to both of his sisters who helped him in his conquest — Queens Visenya and Rhaenys. This custom of brothers marrying sisters continued for generations, all the way to Daenerys’ father, the Mad King Aerys II, the son of married siblings who was himself married to his sister.
Why do Targaryens keep marrying each other?
In short, to keep the blood of the dragon as pure as possible. Books such as “The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones” and “Fire & Blood” detail how the Targaryen tradition of incestuous marriages can be traced back to their time in Old Valyria. For Valyrian families, especially those who raised and rode dragons, maintaining this purity was of paramount importance. The ideal unions were between brother and sister, but when a sibling wasn’t available, uncles, aunts and cousins were thought of as the next-best candidates.
It is not! In fact, the first marriage between Targaryen siblings after King Aegon I conquered Westeros led to the first uprising against the monarchy.
The dominant religion in Westeros is the Faith of the Seven — although some places like the North still worship the old gods. According to the Faith of the Seven, incest between siblings and between a parent and child is an abomination. (It appears cousins are considered far enough removed that their unions are not sin.)
Which characters matter? Which Houses are a factor? Why are their names so hard to spell? We have viewers of the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel covered.
When Aegon the Conqueror took over Westeros, he was already married to his sisters, so the Faith did not comment on these unions. Plus, the Targaryens had just shown the Seven Kingdoms the power of their dragons during the conquest.
But the Faith and the faithful did not remain as silent for King Aegon’s descendants. During the reign of Aegon’s son, King Aenys, the king’s half-brother Prince Maegor caused a rift between the Targaryens and the Faith by taking on a second wife. King Aenys caused further anger by marrying his eldest daughter to his eldest son.
The leader of the Faith, the High Septon, denounced King Aenys as an abomination for this marriage. This led to a rebellion against House Targaryen by the military arm of the Faith of the Seven, the Faith Militant, joined by some rebel Houses.
How did Targaryens become the exception?
When King Jaehaerys I took his place on the Iron Throne, he did what his father (King Aenys I) and uncle (King Maegor I) could not: He patched things up with the Faith of the Seven.
(This Jaehaerys is the king whose reign immediately preceded the current king on “House of the Dragon,” Viserys — making him Princess Rhaenyra’s great-grandfather. King Aenys’ third son, Jaehaerys was married to his younger sister, Alysanne.)
Jaehaerys promised that the Iron Throne would always protect and defend the Faith. In exchange, he convinced them that the Targaryens were different from the other people in Westeros because they are dragonriders from old Valyria. Meaning, the Faith’s rules forbidding incest remain valid, but they officially don’t apply to the Targaryens.
Thanks to King Jaehaerys, the Targaryens had the Faith’s blessing to continue with their incestuous marriages for generations to ensure the blood of the dragon remains pure. “Game of Thrones” fans know how that turned out.

As the sounds of a George Michael song drifted over the tropical gardens, Thailand’s Crown Prince and his fun-loving wife were in the mood to party.
But the guest of honour at the event was not a visiting head of state or local dignitary – but the couple’s pampered poodle, Foo Foo.
A video of the decadent event shot at the Thai Royal Palace in Bangkok shows Princess Srirasmi – a former waitress – cavorting in just a tiny G-string as she feeds the dog cake.

In one scene, the topless princess appears to bend over to eat out of a dog bowl, while in another a servant falls to his knees in front of her. Later the royal couple sing Happy Birthday to their dog.
The video emerged as Thailand is rocked by a military coup. Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra was detained in Bangkok on Friday, and hundreds of people have taken to the streets to protest about the military’s power-grab.
The Crown Prince and his wife yesterday left Tylney Hall, a five-star hotel in Hampshire, where they and a 30-strong entourage had been ensconced for almost a week.
The video is sure to intensify concerns about Prince Maha’s fitness to succeed his father, 86-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The king, who is said to have Parkinson’s disease, has not been seen in public since the military junta decreed martial law.

Last year leaked US diplomatic cables revealed many senior Thai officials expressed grave doubts about the Crown Prince.
In one, a former US ambassador in Bangkok told how Princess Srirasmi confided in him during a state dinner that Foo Foo ‘holds the rank of Air Chief Marshal’.
Four sons of the Crown Prince from a former marriage have been exiled from Thailand by their father since 1996 and now live in the United States.

Yesterday one of them, Juthavachara Vivacharawongse, 34, told The Mail on Sunday at his home near San Diego, California: ‘I would prefer not to speak about this [the coup] or our father. It is a private, family matter.’
The Crown Prince married Princess Srirasmi in 2001. They have a nine-year-old son.
A source in Thailand, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, said yesterday: ‘There are many here who would prefer the Crown Prince not to come back.’

A mother-of-two called the police after finding out that her 13-year-old daughter had been sending and receiving nude pictures of herself and other teens on her tablet computer.
The mom, who has not been named to protect her identity, from Dinwiddie County, Virginia, was horrified when she discovered sexually explicit content on her daughter’s electronic devices.
Her daughter had been 'sexting' boys a series of naked images on her cell phone and tablet computer and had received similar pictures back in response.

Her mother told WTVR : ‘What scares me is... this much bigger than we realize. How many others are doing this and you don't realize it.’
The parents became aware of their 13-year-old’s activity when their other child heard voices in her bedroom around 4 a.m.
They punished her and took away her electronic devices.
But when they had a quick look through the device they were unprepared for what they found.
‘Looking through the phone and the tablet we did find, sexual pictures, conversations, that were very inappropriate for her age,’ she said.
However, while none of the images showed their daughter with anyone else she was sending most pictures to boys who would then text one back to the eighth grader.
But worryingly, one 'sext' involved a high school senior.
‘We believe them to be 17-18ish... Definitely older than her, did request they have sex,’ she said.
‘Everybody wanted to be her friend, because according to these people, she was cool now.’
The girl could face criminal charges.
But her concerned parents said that they called in the sheriff's office to protect her.
‘We did this now to protect her. For now and in the future, because this could get worse, she could be taken,’ she said.

However, the older teens could face felony charges depending on their ages.
Now, the mom is urging other parents to do more to protect their kids.
She said parents should start by having all electronics fitted with parental controls to keep children away from dangerous apps.

A husband-to-be has shared his disbelief after his fiancée asked him to spend a night in a hotel with her mother.
The man said his partner told him of the bizarre “family marriage tradition” to enjoy a romantic night with her mum in the lead-up to their wedding.
He said he was expected to buy his future mother-in-law a dress for their “date night” as well as something to sleep in.

The fiancé would then be expected to take his wife-to-be’s mother out for an all-expenses-paid restaurant dinner before taking her back to a hotel for the night.
While he wasn’t expected to be intimate with his fiancee’s mum, she unbelievably told him she wouldn’t be upset if he was.
Sharing his story, the man said he initially thought his fiancee’s request was a joke.
But he soon learnt she was deadly serious.
“My girlfriend and I have been dating for four years and engaged for one,” the man said in a Reddit post.
“Not too long after we had been dating she told me about her family tradition for marriages.
“She said that the boy must take the mother of the bride out on a date night, buy her a dress and something to sleep in, pay for everything and buy them a hotel [night] to stay in.
“She said that it’s nothing to be worried or freaked out about and that getting the hotel doesn’t mean you have to sleep together (although a long time ago it did).
“I laughed a little bit and asked if she was serious. She said that she was.
“I had a hard time believing it but I didn’t care to discuss it anymore.
“We never really talked about it, until this past week. I had honestly pretty much forgot (sic) about it.
“My girlfriend and I have our wedding in less than a month.
“We were talking about wedding stuff and she asked me if I had picked out what her mum and I were going to do for our date night.
“I laughed it off and waited for her to move on. She didn’t, she looked confused as to why I was laughing.
“She insisted again that this was 100 per cent serious and that she expected me to do it.
“I told her that I didn’t feel comfortable with doing that. I didn’t want to spend a night alone in a hotel with someone who wasn’t my girlfriend or wife.”
While insisting that he share a hotel bed with her mother, the fiancée explained how the disturbing tradition came about.
“I asked her why we would have to get a hotel,” he said.
“She explained that a long time ago the mother of the bride would actually sleep with the boy and that it was viewed as a way to kick off the marriage.
“I asked if she expected me to do that. She laughed and said of course not, but that she couldn’t be upset with me if it did happen.
“She then said that her mother doesn’t plan to actually do anything sexual.
“My girlfriend got more upset and asked me why I was refusing to follow a fun tradition.
“She said that I’m acting like a stubborn kid and that I should just have fun. I insisted that I wouldn’t do the hotel part.”
Since then, the man said relations have been tense with his future wife.
