Incest between twins or " twincest " is a subclass of sibling incest and includes both heterosexual and homosexual relationships. [1]
One supposed case of incest between twins, in which twins who were adopted by separate families as infants later married without knowing they were brother and sister, was mentioned in a House of Lords debate on the Human Fertility and Embryology Bill in January 2008. According to the charity Adults Affected by Adoption, there had been other cases of this sort that had involved siblings. [2] The story was widely publicised in the British press, [3] although its truthfulness was called into question. [4] In a 1983 review of the scholarly literature on twin homosexuality and twin incest, Ray Bixler concluded that "most same-sex homosexual twins, if reared with their co-twins, do not attempt or even want to seduce them in adulthood". [5] His study drew on Edvard Westermarck 's hypothesis that sexual desire is generally absent in relationships between members of a nuclear family . [6]
In traditional Balinese culture, [ when? ] it was common for a set of twins of the opposite sex to marry each other, since it was assumed that they had had sex in utero. The standard anthropological explanation of this custom is based in explications of the conflicts between descent and affinity in Balinese society. [7]
Incest was commonplace in Southeast Asian creation myths which prominently featured twin or sibling couples. In these stories, the brother usually wooed and wed his sister, who bore his child or children, but on discovering that they are siblings, they are often (but not always) forced to part. [8]
Twin incest is a prominent feature in ancient Germanic mythology, and its modern manifestations, such as the relationship between Siegmund and Sieglinde in Richard Wagner 's Die Walküre , and a feature in some Greek mythology , such as the story of Byblis and Kaunos . There are strong parallels between the Germanic portrayals of twin incest and those of the Balinese Ramayana , and some scholars have speculated an early Indo-European link. [9]
The theme also appears in English literature , such as the incest between the twins Polydore and Urania in Delarivier Manley 's The New Atalantis . [10]
The fantasy fiction series A Song of Ice and Fire describes a secret relationship between Jaime and Cersei Lannister , who are fraternal twins . Within the setting of the books, various historical characters from House Targaryen were married to their siblings. [ citation needed ]

Identical twins Anna and Lucy DeCinque have revealed they share every aspect of their lives - including time in bed with their boyfriend.
The 30-year-old sisters baffled ITV's This Morning hosts Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby as they bluntly admitted they sleep with him at the same time .
They said: "We're in the mood at the same time. He's a lucky guy, He needs double the energy, he gets double the love and double the attention."
Although the sisters admitted people have an issue with their arrangement, they have stood by their decision.
"They can have their opinions but this is the way we want to live our lives," they argued. "We're not hurting anyone and it makes us happy.
"We're always going to be together. Because we're with each other 24/7 of our lives it's so much easier to share a boyfriend."
The girls are both in a relationship with mechanic Ben Byrne, who is also a twin - but not an identical one.
Even though the two aren’t actively trying for babies, yet, they told Australian current affairs and discussion show The Insight their plans when they do start planning a family.
Anna said: “If I got pregnant Lucy would definitely get pregnant straight way — because our bodies need to be the same.
“We would try to make that happen, definitely. We are not trying right now — we love children and kids love us, but it’s not the time for us.
“We would have to be exactly the same — even if we went through IVF at the same time.”
The pair shared their story on the show, as part of a double episode about twins.
Following the programme, the twins spoke to the Herald Sun (which weren’t able to say which of the girls was speaking as “their voices are pretty much identical too.”)
One of twins said: “We actually felt a bit intimidated by the other twins, because we always thought we were the centre of attention.”

The pair became famous after they were dubbed the 'world's most identical twins' on a Japanese prank TV show, when facial recognition technology could not tell them apart.
The two - born just a minute apart - have reportedly blown £130,000 on cosmetic surgery to make sure they look as similar as possible.
The list of surgery they have had includes breast implants, lip fillers, fake eyebrows and eyelashes to make sure they look exactly the same.

After having our fill of Christmas classics and festive films, many have been turning to Netflix in recent days when looking for something a little different to kill a few hours.
While plenty have enjoyed Jimmy Carr's latest stand up special, or the star-studded disaster comedy Don't Look Up, some have decided to dabble in the horror genre - giving Mar Targarona's Dos (Two) a go on the streaming platform.
Thanks to it's twisted storyline, dramatic ending and an exceptionally disturbing sex scene, the Spanish horror-thriller has left many viewers lost for word's after watching the psychological drama.
After playing at film festivals since the summer, Dos (Two) is now available to a global audience - many split on what they think after watching the erotic thriller.
Dos (Two) kicks by showing two strangers waking up naked in bed together, coming to the horrific realisation that they have been sewn together at the abdomen.
Already, viewers may some comparisons to the infamous Human Centipede franchise, but the Spanish thriller has actually been likened to another torture porn flick - Saw.
Many have compared the set-up of the new Netflix movie to sadistic villain Jigsaw and his imagined version of his cruel games with a pornographic element.
In Dos (Two) two strangers — Sara (Marina Gatell) and David (Pablo Derqui) — wake up naked and stitched together where even the tiniest bit of movement causes incredible pain for the pair.
While sex may be the last thing on many people's minds placed in this situation, the entwined two do end up going on to produce one of the wildest and most disturbing sex scenes of 2021.
Not only that, plenty of icky and gruesome twists ensure the plot is equally disturbing.
If you can't stomach watching the thriller for yourself, we've summed up the plotline for you below - stop reading now if you're planning to brave watch Dos (Two) one day.
After waking up entwined together, Sara and David try to figure out just who is behind this incredibly weird and intense act, with the pair suspecting Sara's controlling husband, Mario.
David has been working as a male escort and remembers being hired by another man to sleep with his wife - something Sara can picture happening.
After they end up kissing for a second time, their unknown captor shuts off the lights - to avoid seeing the act of intimacy - which reinforces their belief it's Sara's husband behind the set-up.
Somehow, the pair end up going on to have sex in the dark before their sadistic tormentor gives in and offers them a way out of the room.
At this point, things get weird and a plot twist reveals that David and Sara are actually long-lost conjoined twins after being placed in the foster care system after they were born.
Their mother died during their birth it seems and their father was a diagnosed schizophrenic which saw them left to being cared for by the state.
But the pair later discover it was their father behind their present day situation - hence why he kept turning off the lights when they made love.
The long-lost siblings realise their estranged father has murdered Sara's husband and plan to kill their twisted father.
After a scuffle between their father and a gun leaves David wounded, he insists Sara cuts herself free so she can go look for help.
Despite managing to tear herself apart from her brother, it seems there is no happy ending for the pair - as Sara dies in the snow totally naked when attempting to travel to safety.

TRUE STORY: “My husband doesn’t know I share him with my twin sister.”
One woman confesses how and why she let her twin sister ‘marry’ her fiance on her wedding day – and they’re still doing it now!
Growing up, my bff was my sister. We did everything together, from playing with the same toys, to reading the same books and eating the same food. We even had the same friends in school. This might seem strange to some people, but it’s because May* is my twin sister… and they say twins share an affinity.
I have never felt that I needed anyone else in my life other than May. She’s not just a sister and best friend, she’s my confidante whom I can trust all my secrets to. Even when we went to different colleges, our bonds did not break. We might have developed some different friends and priorities then, but we still talked about everything and shared everything… from new interests to gossip in school… and cute boys we liked.
Not long after we both graduated from university and found jobs, May moved out as she found a job at the other end of Singapore. I stayed at home with our parents, but kept in constant contact with May. She would visit us during weekends and we would have lunch together to catch up.
It was during this period that I met and fell in love with Edmund*, a charming expat from London whom I met on one of my work trips. Edmund and I got along so well from the get-go, that we started dating after just a few weeks. And three months into our relationship, he proposed to me!
May met Edmund during one of our family lunches, when she came back to visit the family. I’d told Edmund about my twin sister, but it was still amusing for him to meet another woman who looked exactly like me. And all of us were amused with Edmund as he could not tell us apart – he even walked into the kitchen and placed his hand on May’s back, only to find out that it wasn’t me!
But May took it well and joked that perhaps Edmund should marry the both of us? We laughed it off, but at that time I did not expect that things would really turn out that way…
Because later, during one of my weekly chats with May over the phone she confessed to me that she liked Edmund, and not just as a brother-in-law. She said she had greater feelings beyond that; she revealed that she felt passionate towards him.
Hearing May, I expected to be upset and shocked… but I was not. Somehow I knew May would love Edmund like I did, because we often shared the same passions in the past. Also, May and I had never kept any secrets between us, so I was not surprised that she was so frank with me.
I decided to do the unthinkable, I suggested to May that she could sometimes date Edmund in my place – without his knowledge. He could not tell us apart anyway.
And at our wedding dinner, when I went out to change into my second gown, it was May who returned in the dress, while I stood in the background pretending to be her. We had a huge wedding and many people at the tables had not seen May and I for many years, since we were children, so we were able to get away with it. We never told anybody what we did. I just wanted May to experience the most important day in my life in the same way I did, and I was so happy when I saw that she was in tears of joy when Edmund kissed her.
From then on, May and I have ocassionally “shared” Edmund. Sometimes, she will have dinner with him after work, instead of me. Or they will go shopping, and she pretends to be me. May and I have promised one another to never reveal this to anyone around us.
Sometimes I feel bad about keeping Edmund in the dark, but the charade has gone on for so long, so how do we tell him? Perhaps one day we may have to reveal what we have done. I love Edmund, but I love May even more. And for now, I just want her to be happy.
