A Tony winner for her transformative turn as Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway, Lena Hall stars as the titular character Becks in this indie about a folk-rock musician who follows her girlfriend (Hayley Kiyoko) from Brooklyn to Los Angeles only to be dumped in the opening scenes of the film. Heartbroken and aimless,
Becks drives back east to St. Louis to crash with her mom (Christine Lahti), a former Catholic nun only tenuously OK with her daughter’s sexuality. There, Becks gigs out at a dive bar where she falls for the wife of an old high school rival played with lovely openness by Mena Suvari. For those unfamiliar with the mind-blowing range of Hall’s vocal gymnastics, Becks offers up plenty of the sweeter side of her instrument with original songs from Alyssa Robbins. In this beautifully affecting film, Hall is poised to pull some heartstrings with an entirely new fan base. Liz Rohrbaugh and Daniel Powell directed the film, with Rebecca Drysdale joining them on the writing team.
In the clip above, Becks has just arrived at her mother's house, where she explains how her life has essentially just fallen apart as her mom tries to prove how fine she is with having a lesbian daughter.

Ever since I could remember, I'd always had a burning desire to know what it was like to kiss a girl. Now that I was 18 I figured I could answer that on my own. But I never had the gumption to actually go up to a girl and ask.
However, one day as I was studying for my college classes, mom knocked softly at the door.
"Yeah, mom. What's up?" I didn't even look up, just continued my studies. I figured she was just going to query me about supper.
"Today in the trash," she said as she sat by me. "I found this." I glanced up and saw her holding a used condom.
I shook my head. "Nope. Not mine. Probably Roger's." Roger was my older brother. Sometimes he brought his dates home. Now we knew what they were up to.
"I know." She patted my knee.
I looked back at her and blushed furiously. "Then what?"
"I think it's time we...you know. Had the talk."
I laughed. "Mom. I'm 18. Don't you think it's a bit late for that?" My body flushed with my embarrassment. But to her credit, mom persisted.
"Have you been with a guy yet?"
I stared at her open-mouthed, then shut my jaw audibly. "No."
"Have you ever kissed a guy?" She pressed, her own face color no doubt matching mine.
"No." I admitted, casting my eyes downward.
"Why?"
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Mom, I'm just not into guys, okay?"
"What about girls?"
I froze, terror gripping my heart. "What about them?" I trembled.
"Have you ever kissed a girl?" She leaned closer.
"Mom, I --" Suddenly I closed my eyes and felt mom's sensuous, motherly lips brush against mine. A small, burning ember in my heart suddenly exploded into a massive blaze and I felt my entire body heat up.
