FAMILY MEN LONGING FOR AFFECTION Incestuous Fathers Don't Fit Normal Stereotypes
The father who commits incest with his daughter, in most cases, is not a "dirty old man," a "pervert" or a "sex maniac."
As described by several social workers who counsel incest victims and families, many incestuous fathers are in their late 30s, are fairly intelligent, have been married about 10 years and may be businessmen, professionals or have trades or skills.
These "family-oriented" men, desperate for affection and nurture, want to keep the family together and wouldn't think of going outside the family to prostitutes or other women to fufill their needs, said social worker Cheryl Wilson of Sunbeam Family Services, Inc. "One theory is that the father is looking for a closeness and emotional kindness that has nothing to do with sex," Wilson said, pointing out that he may not get this from his wife.
The mother in incest families often is a homemaker who is financially dependent on the husband, Wilson said. Referring to a study published in American Journal of Psychiatry, the counselor said that more than half of the women in these families are afflicted with serious illnesses or disabilities. Some may become hospitalized, alcoholic, psychotic or depressed. As a result, these wives are separated from their husbands either emotionally or physically.
Hence, the father, who sees sexual touching as the only way to get emotional satisfaction, turns to a child he can be close to, Wilson said. In some cases, she said, the daughter switches roles with the mother by taking on household responsibilities as well as the role of the father's sex partner.
"Sexual intimacy with a child is gradual; it develops over a number of years," the counselor explained.
Most fathers, she said, are not aware of when the relationships between them and their daughters become sexual.
"Sexual abuse usually begins with some type of fondling when the child is between 9 and 12 years old."
Children are also vulnerable to becoming incest victims between 3 and 6 years old, she added.
"This is the Oedipal stage in which the kids are naturally attracted to the parent of the opposite sex," Wilson said. "This is the time parents should set limits. The child needs to know that mommy and daddy have a special relationship which the child can never be a part of."
If a father becomes sexually aroused when dressing in front of his child, sleeping with his child or taking a bath with his child, he is behaving in an incestuous way, counselors agree.
Though Sunbeam Family Services, a non-profit agency, counsels more victims and abusers from lower-income families, incest can occur in families of any socio-economic level.
"The higher-class families can cover it up easier," Wilson said.
"They can look externally OK." Ann Beam, supervisor of the Department of Human Services' Child Welfare Department, said lower-income families tend to have more stress, which contributes to family problems such as incest.
Beam and several counselors believe most incidents of incest are not one-time events. The act of sexual abuse within a family usually is repeated until the child reports it to a relative, friend or neighbor.
But often a child's words aren't enough to end it because mothers and other adults can be difficult to convince.
Wilson said it takes an outside party to put an end to the father's incestuous behavior, no matter how much a father pleads he will stop.
"Incest is a problem of impulse and control," Wilson said, adding that the entire involved family, not just the father, needs help.
Some abused children keep incest a secret until sexual intercourse or pain is involved, or they learn from their peers that a sexual relationship between a parent and child isn't the norm, Wilson said.
"When kids reach puberty, they become sexually aware and aware of what is happening to them."
But before that realization, some children find the relationship "pleasurable" because it makes them feel special, and they receive a lot of affection, though it is in the form of sexual activity, Wilson said.
Counselor Liz Howell, of Parents Assistance, said, "The kids kind of like it because it feels good. They're getting attention too."
Eventually some children become seductive, Wilson said. "Sometimes foster parents of sexually-abused children complain that the child behaves in a seductive manner.
"But it's not her fault. The child was taught to behave this way by her natural parents; she doesn't know how to behave otherwise. She learned to be seductive, to give favors in exchange for love and attention."
But as the incestuous relationship continues, the child becomes ridden with guilt and confusion, Wilson said.
Bad dreams and health problems are not uncommon. The children may have unexplained blackouts, seizures, asthma, migraine headaches or ulcers or may become preoccupied with having a brain tumor.
Unless they receive counseling, most victims grow up to be adults of low self-esteem who have difficulty with men either sexually, emotionally or both, said Wilson, who counsels a group of women who were incest victims as children.
"While some women become frigid, other women will want sex excessively," she said. "Some victims may even get married but they hold a part of themselves away from their spouses."
The women attending Wilson's session probably wouldn't be there if their own daughters hadn't been abused by the women's husbands, she said.
"These women tend to marry men like their fathers. They can spot them like a radar. The women feel comfortable with these men because they know what to expect."
Counseling, whether it's done when they're young or grown, can help victims learn to accept themselves as well as their parents. Part of the healing process is learning to stop blaming themselves, Wilson said. The average time of treatment, she said, is two years.

The confused child wrote disturbing journal entries detailing the escalating relationship between Steven Pladl and his long-lost biological daughter Katie after the pair reconnected via social media
THE confused diary entries of an 11-year-old girl helped expose the incestuous relationship between her father and her long-lost sister in a scandal that has shocked America.
Steven Pladl of Wake County, North Carolina left his wife to start a relationship with Katie Fusco, going as far as fathering a child with her.
The sordid affair between father and daughter began after Katie decided to track down her biological parents after they gave her up for adoption in 1998.
Katie, who had turned 18, reconnected with her biological parents via social media and went to live with them and their two other children near Richmond, Virginia in August 2016.
Just three months later, Steven and his unsuspecting wife Alyssa separated, and she moved out of the family home taking her two young children with her.
In May 2017, Alyssa received a call from her estranged husband saying their 11-year-old daughter had started to misbehave during visits to see him after he and Katie moved 150 miles away.
He handed his wife the girl’s diary and it was then that the sickening truth emerged .
According to the Daily Mail , the confused and disgusted child had written: “Katie is pregnant. Dad says they feel like couples. Did they get a little too drunk that night? My dad is a slut.
"He'll go to hell but he won't be the one getting tortured, he'll be the one torturing people."
The girl added: "Wait one second if he's Satan and Katie is a human then the baby will be half demon."
The diary also included drawings of her pregnant sister and dad, depicting them both as devils.
Alyssa now feels that he allowed her to read their daughter’s diary as he was too much of a coward to openly tell her the truth.
As expected, the disgusting details in her daughter’s diary left the 37-year-old horrified.
She said: "I lost it. I started screaming. I felt like I was going to throw up.”
After confronting her husband, Alyssa discovered the pair planned to marry and that Steven had instructed his other children to call Katie their “step-mum”.
She told cops her husband would sleep on the floor of Katie’s room in the months before she moved out.
The authorities were alerted and arrest warrants were issued for the pair.
They were tracked down last month and charged with incest with adult, adultery, contributing to delinquency.
A baby boy, understood to be a four-month-old fathered by Steven, was found at their home.
Steven and Katie were held at the Wake County Detention Center pending extradition to Virginia.
Court records show Steven was released on a $1 million bond while Katie, issued with the same bond, remains in jail.
Alyssa lays the blame solely on her 42-year-old ex-husband, insisting he brainwashed and seduced Katie after she moved into their marital home in Henrico.
She said: “There are no words to describe the sense of betrayal and disgust I'm feeling.
“I waited 18 long years to have a relationship with my daughter - and now he's completely destroyed it.”
