Most people find incest unacceptable, and there are compelling reasons for such a position: (1) culturally and traditionally, incest is largely considered a taboo, and (2) inbreeding -- those with close genetic relationships producing offspring -- greatly increases the chance of the child/children developing congenital disorders. Incest has, however, occurred quite often in history, the royalty of ancient Egypt using it as a means of perpetuating their royal lineage. Today though, incest is considered a crime in most territories with only a few countries like the Netherlands, Spain, and France being exceptions. In fact, even in these countries where consensual incest is legal, the public is still largely outraged by such relationships despite the fact that the state tolerates them.
Here are ten recorded or alleged cases of incest that have shocked the world:
John Phillips, who passed away in 2001, was best known as a member and leader of The Mamas & the Papas, a vocal group responsible for the 1960s hits "California Dreamin" and "Monday Monday", among others. In 2009, John's image as a Papa was tarnished when his eldest daughter, Mackenzie -- herself a celebrity due to her acting and singing stints -- went public with allegations that she and her father had maintained a ten-year sexual relationship. In her memoir called High on Arrival, Mackenzie claimed that their incestuous relationship began when her father raped her while they were both high on drugs on the eve of her first marriage. On Oprah, the then 48-year-old actress of the Disney Channel show So Weird, further revealed that her relations with her father caused her to be pregnant and get an abortion, which her father paid for. Mackenzie's half-sister, Chynna Phillips, publicly stated that she believed that what Mackenzie claimed was true. However, another half-sister, Bijou Philipps, and Bijou's mother, Geneviève Waïte, believed Mackenzie's portrayal of John Phillips was inconsistent with his character.
In 2006, Nick Cameron and Danielle Heaney met for the first time in Glenrothes, Fife. While they were half brother and sister (they have the same mother but different fathers), they grew up apart with Danielle being raised by her parents and Nick being raised in foster care. The two immediately grew infatuated with each other and within three weeks of their meeting, Danielle ended her marriage with her husband, with whom she had a four-year-old daughter. Nick and Danielle then moved in together and cared for Danielle's daughter as if she were their own. One time, the couple's mother, Susan, walked in on the couple making love and reported the matter to the police. Nick and Danielle were then put on a year's probation for admitting that they had committed incest. However, after enforced separation for nine months, the two moved in together once again, this time vowing that they no longer had sex as the court had ordered.
In 2012, David Epstein, a then 46-year-old science professor at Columbia University in New York, was charged with one count of incest for a consensual sexual relationship with his then 24-year-old daughter. Epstein and his daughter were said to have carried out the relationship between 2006 and 2009. What outraged the public even more about the case was what Epstein's lawyer, Matthew Galluzo, told ABCNews.com in defense of his client:
Academically, we are obviously all morally opposed to incest and rightfully so. At the same time, there is an argument to be made in the Swiss case to let go what goes on privately in bedrooms. . . . It’s OK for homosexuals to do whatever they want in their own home. How is this so different?
Eventually, Epstein pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempted incest, which was a step down from the felony charge of incest he was originally charged with. The prosecution appeared to have arranged the plea bargain after Epstein's daughter refused to testify against her father. Epstein also managed to retain his position as a professor at Columbia.
Linda Rinehart knew that her husband, Daniel, had been raping their daughter, Ashley, in their family camper home since the girl was five years old, but the mother never lifted a hand to stop the abuse. Ashley's three sisters, meanwhile, were threatened with death if they ever discussed what was going on with anyone. However, in 2009, one of the daughters, Hayley, escaped from the home and called the Harrisonville, Missouri police. Hayley told officers that Ashley had given birth to four of her father's children with three of them dying. Two of the three babies that had died were disposed of in coolers and left on a farm, but the one Ashley had delivered when she was sixteen had surived and was a four-year-old then.
During the trial, Daniel insisted that his relationship with Ashley was consensual, that she showed her interest in having sex with him by rubbing his shoulders on two occasions. In 2010, a jury disregarded Daniel's claims by finding him guilty, the judge sentencing the man to life in prison plus 22 years for incest, statutory rape, felony murder, and abandonment of a corpse.
Born to a traditional Amish family in 1987, Anna Slabaugh often got into trouble for what was considered unacceptable Amish behavior like being naughty in church and wearing her cap improperly. It was for this reason that Anna partly blamed herself when her then 19-year-old brother began molesting her when she turned 11. After that brother moved away, her 17-year-old brother then took his turn. Later, when Anna got her period at 13, she tried to fight back for fear that she would get pregnant. Her resistance didn't prove effective, however, as the abuse continued. Anna then tried to seek help from her church, a woman's shelter, a social worker, and her neighbors -- all to no avail. In fact, when the Swartzentruber Amish community learned that Anna had tried to report what was happening to her, she was considered an outcast. Furthermore, Anna's mother brought her to a dentist and had all of Anna's teeth pulled out so that she wouldn't "be talking anymore."
In April of 2008, a 42-year-old Elizabeth Fritzl told the police in Amstetten, Austria that she had been held captive for 24 years by her father, Joseph Fritzl. She further reported that in a hidden corridor of their basement, her father physically and sexually abused her countless times, resulting in the birth of seven children, one dying three days after birth. Four of the live children were raised by Elizabeth in captivity, while Josef and wife Rosemarie claimed that the three others were foundlings. It was when eldest daughter Kerstin fell unconscious and had to be brought to hospital that police finally discovered the crime and charged Josef with rape, manslaughter by negligence, false imprisonment, and incest. During the trial, it was also revealed that strangely, wife Rosemarie had no idea all those years about what her husband, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was doing.
In 1987, Linda Hodge, an adopted daughter of a couple in California, turned eighteen and decided to search for her birth parents. A firm that specialized in such matters was actually able to find Linda's biological father, who turned out to be billionaire Bruce McMahan. The man then arranged to meet his daughter in 1990. The two got along and lived together; then, their relationship took a bizarre turn. Then then 63-year-old McMahan, who was married to his fourth wife, told the then 29-year-old Linda that they had been married in a previous life. Linda seemed to believe the claim, and they proceeded to begin life as a couple. However, the relationship later turned ugly with Linda vowing to "preemptively destroy" her biological father and Bruce filing a lawsuit against Linda for stealing his firm's trade secrets. The cases have since been settled.
Just outside an Australian country town in southern New South Wales lies a quiet rural camp. Little did the world know that the scrubland communal block housed forty adults and children constituting an incestuous family that had interbred for four generations. The first of the incestuous Colts were a brother and a sister, who began a family tradition of interbreeding that largely went unnoticed. However, September of 2014 saw the current family matriarch, Betty Colt, become the first of the clan to be convicted. The charges against her involved Betty's recruitment of her 16-year-old son, Bobby, to kidnap his 15-year-old brother from foster care. Welfare officers had taken twelve Colt children, including two of Betty's, after authorities discovered them living in squalid conditions. The children were lacking basic life skills like the ability to communicate properly and brush their teeth. Worse, several of the children had oddly-formed facial features, which scientific tests revealed were a result of family interbreeding. The scandal came to light after one of the few Colt children who attended school told friends, "My sister is pregnant, and we don't know which of my brothers is the father."
Born in 1922, Barbara Baekeland grew up to become a wealthy and beautiful socialite who was often featured in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. However, like her mother, she suffered mental health problems and attempted suicide several times. Barabara's mental instability was also evident in her complex and allegedly incestuous relationship with her gay son, Antony. According to accounts, Barbara was attempting to "cure" her son's homosexuality by coercing Antony into having sex with her. Meanwhile, Antony was mentally unstable himself as he suffered from schizophrenia and went through several violent arguments with his mother. Those violent episodes culminated with Antony killing Barbara by stabbing her with a knife on November 17, 1972. Strangely, when police arrived, Antony was casually ordering Chinese food over the phone. Then, after Antony had spent close to eight years in prison, he proceeded to live with his grandmother, whom he likewise nearly stabbed to death.

13 Incestuous Pop-Culture Couples With Cringe-Worthy Chemistry
By Lauren Duca and Christopher Rudolph
What with “Spoils of Babylon,” “August: Osage County” and the approaching premiere of Lifetime’s update on “Flowers in the Attic,” it feels like incest is just really in right now. Although, when it comes to entertainment, familial love is nothing new — Oedipus was already making out with his mother in the fifth century B.C. Now, as you wait for the campy yet terrifying greatness that will surely fill this latest version of “Flowers in the Attic,” we bring you 13 incestuous couples in preparation of the onslaught of taboo.
Chris & Cathy, “Flowers in the Attic”
The essential slumber party reading material is infamous for its incest plot line involving the Dollanganger children as they are locked and hidden away in the upstairs of a giant mansion, but wait, there’s more! Not only is there a romance between brother and sister Cathy and Christopher, but it turns out that their mother and father are actually uncle and niece! The original book is dark and terrifying while the 1987 film version is a campy cult classic. The new Lifetime version has a lot to live up to.
George Michael & Maeby, “Arrested Development”
After she kisses him to make her mother jealous at George Sr.’s retirement party, George Michael’s love for Maeby is interrupted only briefly by his bland for egg. By the time he grows interested in upcoming film “Les Cousins Dangereux,” their trip to second base in the model home is inevitable. George and Maeby soon find out that they are definitely biologically-related cousins, before later discovering that they are definitely not biologically-related cousins (Maeby is Lindsay and Tobias’s biological daughter, but Lindsay is not Lucille and Georges’). Oh, also they accidentally got married in an old folks’ home.
Dexter & Debra Morgan, “Dexter”
Dexter and Deb are not biologically related, but the way they were raised and their closeness as siblings rendered Deb’s affection disgusting at a truly visceral level. Initially it appeared that Deb’s romantic feelings might have been simply an uncomfortable suggestion by her therapist — an unsettling aside, perfectly capable of finding its way out of the show’s consciousness. Yet, when she pursues her feelings to the extent of confessing her adoration for Dexter, things go from complex to just bad. In the words of Deb herself: “You’re a serial killer and I’m more fucked up than you are.”
Norma & Norman Bates, “Psycho” - “Bates Motel”
Norma and Norman Bates have a very close mother and son relationship. Initially shown in the 1960 film “Psycho” by Alfred Hitchock, the relationship receives the origin treatment in A&E’s new prequel series “Bates Motel.” The series shows how Norma and Norman spooning one another in bed will eventually lead to Norman keeping Norma’s skeleton in the basement and dressing as her, while he kills the tenants of his motel. Happy Mother’s Day?
Margo & Ritchie, “The Royal Tenenbaums”
Margo and Ritchie’s taboo love may have been created for the sole purpose of inspiring Halloween costumes. As an adopted daughter, Margo and her fake finger don’t biologically count as part of the Tenenbaum clan, but she and her tragic tennis player know their feelings are wrong. The stress of it all culminates on the court, with Ritchie sinking down, while a sportscaster narrates his struggle: “He’s taken off his shoes and one of his socks and ... actually, I think he’s crying.”
Luke Skywalker & Princess Leia, “Star Wars: Episode IV”
These unwitting siblings really didn’t have much chemistry in the first place. Leia only initially kissed Luke to make Haan Solo jealous, which is never a good reason to kiss someone (even if they don’t turn out to be your fraternal twin). Eventually, Luke and Leia discover that they are the children of Padmé Amidala and, well, Darth Vadar: “Luke, [she is your sister].”
[Spoiler] & [Spoiler], “August: Osage County”
We won’t destroy a major plot point in the play/film, but two members of the extended family fall in love only to end up being related even more so than they originally thought. Get ready to gasp along with the rest of the audience when the secret connection is revealed.
Marty & Lorraine McFly, “Back To The Future”
Don’t blame Lorraine (Lea Thompson), the attraction is purely innocent when she falls for her time-traveling son (Michael J. Fox) instead of her future husband in 1955. Whether she knew it or not, she was hitting on her offspring, but we have to give her credit for comparing kissing Marty to kissing her brother.
Jaimie & Cersei Lannister, “Game of Thrones”
Brother and sister Cersei and Jaime of the House of Lannister have been carrying on a secret affair since they were children. The sibling lovers have had three children Myrcella, Tommen, and the sociopathological King Joffrey. Similar to Cathy and Christopher from “Flowers in the Attic,” but only if they had evil royal children as a result of their affair. Even in Westeros incest must be kept secret.
Cynthia & Devon Morehouse, “Spoils of Babylon”
The IFC miniseries from Funny or Die spoofs, the major television events from the ‘80s like “North and South” and “The Thorn Birds,” follows the wealthy Moorhouse family over the span of 50 years. The star-studded miniseries stars Kristen Wiig and Tobey Maguire as star-crossed adoptive siblings. Over the years, war and money tear the two apart, but their love burns eternal. We’ll watch Wiig in anything, even if she is kissing her (adoptive) brother.
Kathryn Merteuil & Sebastian Valmont, “Cruel Intentions”
Katheryn and Sebastian aren’t hopelessly drawn to each other so much as they feed on mutual manipulation in an economy of sex, power and, well, coke. Sarah Michelle Gellar is so flawlessly evil, it’s difficult to explain her actions through anything other than sociopathy. No word on whether “Les Liaisons dangereuses” (upon which the movie is based) played any role in inspiring George Michael’s obsessed with “Les Cousins Dangereux.” (See: George Michael & Maeby, “Arrested Development.”)
Cher & Josh, “Clueless”
Had you asked Cher Horowitz, if she would ever date Josh, her brother from another mother / by marriage, she would have gawked at you, before disappearing into her massive closet: “As if!” Alas, the tides of Jane Austen’s “Emma” threaded throughout this parodic teen movie, our endearingly pretentious heroine drew ever closer to making out with her brother. Their eventual coupledom is emotionally satisfying enough to be justified. Hey, they’re not really related.
Greg & Marcia Brady, “A Very Brady Sequel”
When Carol’s first husband moves into the Brady household, Greg is forced to share his “far out pad” with his sister Marcia. It isn’t until their first night in the attic together (what is it with attics?!) that Marcia and Greg realize their attraction toward one another. The spark prompts them to realize that if Carol’s still married to her first husband then they aren’t even technically related. Though they’re not related by blood, thinking of the Brady kids as sexually attracted to one another is just wrong, and we’re glad Marcia and Greg agree on that when they finally kiss at the end of the movie.
“Flowers In The Attic” premieres Jan. 18 at 8 P.M. E.T. on Lifetime.
